I'm not trying to be rude by saying that either, I just find it to be more of a surface issue than the issue of the depth of the church constraints. So I've read through some comments and most of them are basing the song entirely off of the music video, as most people do. But the thing is, in my opinion, the music video isn't set in stone as the purpose of the song. I think this is especially true with this song. The homosexuality in the music video doesn't a) prove that the song writer is gay or b) mean the song is about homosexuality. I think that homosexuality was included in the video in order to prove a point against the skewed views of the church. The song itself has no sexual preference, it only talks of sexual longing. I found it to be a bit conflicting, as if the writer wanted to have treated this woman better, but the church made him hate himself and the relationship because of its teaching and now he's spiting the church because he lost her. He says 'take me to church' in a mocking way, because in reality he wants sex with this girl. I also find it to be particularly interesting because of the darkness of it all. The fact that they were 'born dirty' to reference the fact that the church believes everyone to be born sinners. Then, I might be wrong here, but worshiping like a dog could also be referring to sex. And lastly, his loving being born sick, I think that signifies that he's finally learning to love who he is and not hating himself for not being able to follow the rules that church sets (which, not to be too controversial, are rules that no one can ever possibly live up to and are pretty ridiculous). |
