No. This song IS NOT about Joey. COME ON. He may have been a good drummer but how good was he if they had a falling out and his leaving was mutual. Anyway, enough about that 5y.o drama. It's done and dusted. The Gray Chapter was a sick album. This has to be about Lucifer... The devil. I'm not saying the band is Satanic but as far as the Christians go ol' Luci gets a bad rap and I think that is what this song is about. God creates the big bad to punish the evil doers but he becomes this excuse for everything bad that a person does. Any time Catholic Church comes under fire for the massive amounts of child sexual abuse they say that the devil is making the people investigating it do it. Or the devil made the priests do it. Plenty of other examples. But the devil has become the perfect scapegoat (no pun intended) That's what the songs jumps out at me about. Basically that and "you're either a good christian or you are evil". |

In fact Lucifer literally means "Morning Star" "The Lord of lies" could be a reference to Belial (As referenced in Diablo 3 as the lord of lies) which in the Jewish faith is also the Devil. I'd say it's about when something ends with someone you have a long term connection with, whether friends or lovers; the connection never really ends. When you grow together and start connecting there are just some things about them that rub off on you and vice versa. So even you think it's ended they will always be with you in the slightest way and they be with you too. Anyway this song has a real "deftones sound" to it. |

I know that Saturday Night Wrist was made during a time where the band wadn't really getting along. The music execs were struggling with Chino's song writing ability, saying that his addiction was preventing him from writing a good song. The band mates were conflicted style wise, fighting over the progression of the band's sound or "style". "Is this your style? DECIDE! You wanted it, I wont say a fucking thing!" Irony is, that if this is the dialog for these lyrics it has made for a fucking good song. |

Abe writes some amazing lyrics. This song applies to those who act a certain way to get attention. Funny how long ago this song came out and yet it applies to the now so well? Like those people who act super depressed on social media to get popular but it gets out of control, and those who really have depression get overlooked because of all these teenage dickwads that are just attention seeking. Gotta love the Soundwave-esque (Transformers) vocals in this song though. One of my favorite songs. |

My interpretation is that they are singing about a very toxic, narcissistic person. "Just to drive me wild I let you pretend But you know Truth is that I love you to death Like you love this game" A narcissistic person can be really charming and lovable, they know how to put on this charade to get you hooked in, but do something that to them jeopardizes that charade and you are in for a rough ride, it is a game they love to play, they toy with your emotions and make you feel crazy. "What can I say I think your head’s fucked Go on drive me wild" You start to realize how fucked in the head they really are, but you still end up playing their game without meaning to, any kind of reaction to.their bullshit drama vacuum gives them the ammunition for a new fight. The next verse reinforces the narcissistic person theory, once you become their target they will look for every little negative thing to pick apart, to make you look like the bad guy and play the victim to get the attention they crave. In the last verse they see the common thread or what triggers the abuse and for once they feel right in the negative feelings they feel towards this narcissistic person, they finally have had enough and want this person to admit their sick mentality. In summary, this song is great. The lyrics; as Deftones song lyrics often do; are so good at hitting a nerve or have deep meaning. |

Could be just me inferring my own feelings and dramas into the song but kind of comes across as dealing with a narcissistic, emotionally manipulative person. No matter how you speak to them it's a fucking shit fight and they are always right in their eyes, never seeing any wrong doing. It gets to the point where you rather get shot in the face than having to talk to them because no matter what you say you're an asshole. "no reason, no explanation so play the violins" when you say something that makes them upset when it wasn't even something upsetting in the first place, so they do the "woe is me you hurt my feelings" thing. "One day the will come up and you'll come up empty again" Things are going good and they have no reason to cause drama, they'll find something to cause drama about. And who'll be laughing then? I kinda think it's about Mike himself. Record Company starting to dislike Mike, because Mike really wants to do his own thing with the band and music. He was young when they started out, and as he grew he decided he wanted to change and evolve and didn't want to play their little game anymore. "Would not listen to us" lost his appetite for the typical rockstar antics, started playing pranks on diva rockstars like Anthony Kiedis, Axl Rose etc. therefore losing friends lol And being banned from touring with their bands.
