To me, this is someone with a personality disorder who dreams of escape. The title 'Sky Machine' means escaping to the sky where everything is beautiful and heavenly up there. Escaping from the ground and being truly happy, away from everything you once knew. The song is just his journey of escaping his disorder and being free. Committing suicide. No longer feeling alive, unable to feel people around you, so out of touch, out of mind. He tells people he's still there but he's just a liar. He has no plan of how he wants to cross the line and escape but he really wants it, he'll do it with an open mind. He wants someone to show him what life is really about, set him on fire, put him through anything, just let him know what it takes. Crossing the line, attempting suicide and meeting someone who comes to help you as a result. Anyone you feel like you can click or connect in the slightest way, you'll feel like they're the one you need, you feel like both of you are falling in love when its barely reached that point. Soon you will see his reasons to justify his thoughts of suicide. People around him have stopped caring, so as he dies, the ones dear to him won't even make a sound. Few have the heart to be there for him, will you run or stay? You can't let out how you really feel because it's just your disorder, you have to do everything in your power to keep it hidden. So paranoid about it, even the ones that don't see are actually there. They're not there, but you feel like they are just watching you from time to time. He's begging for someone to take him away, he's dying to know how actually living life is like. In the end, there is no other way of escape other than suicide. |

To me, it's about a guy who's a slave to his own life. He only ever tries to make her smile and lies about how he really feels just to create this fantasy that everything's alright. But only at her place. Only for her. He doesn't expect anything from her, dust will keep him satisfied. He feels the memories that he gets from making her happy will serve him but all he's doing is waiting to find he's going the wrong way and he's gray. Lifeless. Why is it so hard to stay away when he's not truly happy? He only memorises those things, it's all not from his heart, it's just what he does to make her happy. He just feels that if he were to be himself, he wouldn't belong. He's hoping she would make him feel like he belongs. All this is no price for him to pay. It's all going to be worth it. You don't have to say that you'd love to. But baby please that you'd want to. Someday.. The best line in the whole song. After all he does for her, he only wishes her to want him for who he really is, not the relationship that she loves so, which he protected and built. All he wants is to be himself. But that will come, someday.. |

Love the ambience of this song.. I'm not sure if the lyrics are right but I agree with the other lyrics websites where he says feeling all your touching, feeling all your blood. Rather than feeling are you touching. Based on that, to me at the start it sounds like a tape is playing but through my headphones I also hear waves crashing on the beach. It feels like a widow or someone who isn't with that person anymore is just winding back in time and indulging the happy and romantic times when they were just sitting by the beach and enjoying the sound of the waves crashing before them under the night sky. When the first music comes in, it feels like the person is so immersed into the memory of the tape he starts to relive the moments. Feeling all your touching, feeling all your love.. As the song progresses and gets ever so slightly louder in tone, the person then lives through the part which started to go wrong.. And he just knew it was coming, he could see it in her heart. But he doesn't know if what he's feeling is real or not. As the music gets louder and louder, I see the relationship getting more and more broken, it could've gotten so intense that he murdered her so whenever he sees the tape again, he feels her blood. In the end, he's just back to reality, watching the tape, by himself, feeling ever so lonely. Imagining, wishing she was still here.. Feeling all your touching. Feeling all your love. |

If I try to interpret this song as a song about a relationship (which isn't uncommon in Interpol songs) I see that it is about how a girl screwed up the relationship as she didn't feel much for the guy but later on changes, and really falls for him. So she tries everything to fix their relationship, but he's already so fed up and keeps pushing her away until her lips are 'lost and faded'. They tried starting over again but 'she can read' something is wrong with their relationship. He also makes an effort to start over but he feels that he has become permanently scarred by her previous actions that he believes he will never see how innocent and beautiful their relationship used to be and how he will never see her face again like how he used to when they first fell in love. You go stabbing yourself in the neck, you really screwed us over and you called this upon yourself. The bridge is about how he tries to get into her again but her stories are boring and stuff and he's lost all interest in her. She even knows when he tries to act as though he's interested, she keeps telling him there's still hope and it makes his heart feel heavy because he's really trying to get into her again, it's almost like forcing someone to love. In the end, she gives up and packs away, it still makes him feel bad because he really tried to make himself feel love again. Her 'heaven' is never enough. He believes he tried his hardest and gave her everything he could, gave her heaven, but it's not enough and this again, makes his heart heavy. He's left broken even though he's not the one who screwed up the relationship. Tragic song. |
