Thank God! I know (from experience myself) it's soooooo hard to so much as admit it to yourself, much less find the almost impossible amounts of courage necessary to actually get out!! While you'll never be grateful (LOL!) or happy about it, and while, YEAH you'd go back and change it if you could, damn right!, you WILL be stronger, smarter, more confident, and BETTER for it in the end. This is DEFINITELY about escaping violence, but I think it's more about finally being old enough to just leave, or even actually running away from, abusive parent(s) moreso than an adult domestic violence situation. First of all, there are several Pearl Jam songs that address that issue (Daughter, Jeremy, Foxymophandlemama, Animal come to mind immediately), I want to say more than domestic violence. Second, for some reason to me the lyric "finally the shades are raised" makes me think it's 'shedding light' on a parent's abuse, especially when combined with "united by fear" possibly regarding a sibling. That, and the word "beatings" being **generally** used to refer to an adult beating a kid lead me to believe this is about being abused as a kid. Regardless, it's an incredibly cathartic, powerful, emotional, IMPORTANT song for anyone who's a survivor of ANY kind of abuse. Aside, one of my favorite lines of ALL TIME is: It wasn't my surface most defiled Meaning that the worst scars left are psychological. SO beautiful. |
