Hey Rosetta – I've Been Asleep For A Long, Long Time Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[Deepduder:7038] I agree I think it's about missing so much, not noticing what's going on around you. And the painful coming to terms with all you missed out on while you were so afraid of getting hurt or of feeling anxious or sad. A guess would be maybe it's about someone who missed out on fully experiencing the moment on account of being drunk or high or thinking-thinking-thinking about something else. |
Hey Rosetta – Psalm Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I may be way off, but I see a story of learning (being taught, perhaps by a therapist?) to live without an addiction (maybe a proper addiction like alcohol or drugs, or maybe avoidance using TV or food or video games). Slowly coming around to reality: the things you don't trust are your feelings (you're human, and as much as you wish away anxiety or sadness, you need the dark to see the light, and not having feelings is actually a pretty awful experience) so I think this is about learning to be mindful, to feel without judgement or avoidance, and pay attention to what the feelings are trying to tell you. Cautiously into the dark - experiencing your feelings cautiously at first but then you slowly start to realize that this is reality and things are deeper and more meaningful now (your eyes will adjust). I would not be surprised if the person who wrote this song has struggled with addiction - I'm not saying he has (I ain't a mind-reader) just that it would make sense to me. |

[I like learning new things and finding out my old opinions were wrong, bit by bit. That's one of the best things about Decemberists songs, I can have a first impression and keep updating my interpretation, and with each iteration a new thought about life emerges.] "The prettiest whistles won't wrestle the thistles undone" Margaret (who is restless, like many of the people in Colin Meloy's songs) goes away in search for adventure and freedom. And what happens? She meets someone, falls in love, and they have a child and ends up living the same stationary life she went away from. And even though she has a perfect life - full of pretty "whistles" which I take to mean a family, career, home, and everything that makes you happy and stuff - she's still a bit restless. She didn't have a chance to get that out of her system before she got her perfect life. And that is the hazard of falling in love. "If I lost this thorn from my side, I think I'd die" (neopolitan bridesmaid) |
