I\'ve already sent you a private message to a) send you a YT link to the demo version of "I Wanna Be Adored" & b) inform you that I obtained the demo version of the song when I purchased their "20th Anniversary Legacy Edition" that contains 2 CDs (the 1st is their original album w/ the 10-minute version of "Fools Gold" & the 2nd is their 20-track "Lost Demos" album) & a DVD that contains the entirety of their legendary live show at Blackpool\'s Empress Ballroom, followed by 6 of their promo\' videos for their singles. \r\n\r\nIt\'s awesome to own but they also have a \'Collector\'s Edition\' box set release that not only contains what I\'ve mentioned above but another CD named "Extras", as well as everything that I\'ve just mentioned (apart from "The Lost Demos" album) on vinyl, as well as a lemon-shaped USB that contains absolutely everything again, plus I have previously read that some versions of it came with some of Squire\'s amazing artwork from their singles.\r\n\r\nCheers & best wishes to all from sunny & sweltering, hot & humid "Down Under"...Matt. |

@[Mononoke:28573] Makes two of us, my friend...this song is often ridiculously accurate for me/my existence, together with numerous Joy Division songs...man, I must sound like a right joy to be around, eh?!
But after owning/running my own bar/boutique club in Melbourne's CBD for 8 straight years (2000-08 - all of the usual stereotypes - decent coke habit & a shitload of weed 24/7, shagging hot girlfriends & strippers - not at the same time, sadly! - in the jacuzzi upon the top floor of the club, etc) & then falling 35 feet from the top floor (100% SOBER, btw!) on Sept' 2nd, '08, my life has changed dramatically since then - way too much time spent upon the computer & general tech' stuff now...so I can so vividly relate to this song nowadays, although I'm INCREDIBLY fortunate to even be able to walk now, after smashing half the bones in my body after the fall!! |

As I did with EVERY single DM album, single & box set back (Including my favourite box set - the Japanese only X1 & X2 boxes of 4 CDs each that cost me about $1,500 AUD back in 1991) in the '80s & '90s, I first heard this upon the "Condemnation" CD single that I purchased, from the SOFAD album.

And I am in total agreement with you about the meaning of the song - only thing that I feel compelled to correct, although it's minimal is the fact that the first verse actually says "With their frequency words", rather than "with little frequency wiring" - but no biggie!!

I concur 100% with your numerous analyses of the meaning of the song's lyrics & the second possibility of them (chastising myself for not always fully utilising my many abilities/qualities that I was given & instead succumbing to either laziness, arrogance, infidelity &/or cocaine abuse - hard to knock back when it's always free & lovely!!) applies to me BIG-TIME!!

@[jtanium:23764] I've loved this song (all NO songs for that matter, & JD prior to them) since my teen years & I must not only agree with your interpretation of the lyrics but also acknowledge that they 100% refer to my life for almost 20 years, until 9 years ago, when I was involved in a MAJOR accident (Karma, perhaps?!) & wasn't expected to live, let alone walk again, as I've rather incredibly been able to do!! Please excuse my digression re: my accident there - as that part has nothing to do with the lyrics or, at least, I don't think so?!
Also, I'm straight & I too can see nothing relating to any form of sexuality within the lyrics. |

You were spot-on re: the feeling of hopelessness, whatever the cause of the depression, whether it be self-inflicted (eg drugs) or caused by circumstances out of one's control (death of a loved one)...or perhaps something in between the two (like being homeless after being kicked out of home by one's parents for 'coming out' of the proverbial closet, for example). |

Very high quality, insightful and honest review, Mike. I too am not not a Coldplay fan (I primarily love my 80s indie stuff from Manchester - New Order, Joy Division, Smiths, etc - & I also dislike Yellow!) and there are really only two of their songs that ever really appealed to me (Talk & Viva la Vida), more so for what their lyrics meant to me than their catchy "poppiness", for want of a better word. Very intelligent interpretation of this song's lyrics and well articulated too! You've gone a tad deeper on each of my basic thoughts I have in my "more shallow" (honestly, no aquatic pun intended, let's say basic instead!!) interpretation but at least we're on the same track!!
And also, you've reminded me of how much I used to love my Acid...as I'm also sure Mr David Byrne did/does as well, after all of these years watching him perform live, in music videos and especially some of his more enigmatic comments, opinions and beliefs in his interviews!!

Agree with you 100% on every count, especially re: David Byrne being a genius, a very cool and quirky one. at that!! And your interpretation of the lyrics is also spot-on, after having heard Mr Byrne say so himself in an old interview that I originally saw years ago but recently viewed again...and finally, I particularly agree with your mention of both "Naive Melody (This must be the place)" and "Nothing but flowers", especially the former...which also happens to be one of their best live tracks...well, in my humble opinion, at least! And I was just thinking the other day that it could say "I'm banning all of these ADDICTS from this place", which could also work...so rather than help the situation, I've now offered three possibilities in order to further complicate the issue...story of my life!!! |

Without wishing to sound rude, are you joking about "no third party involved in the Curtis relationship"?!! Google "Annik Honore" - she was a Belgian amateur rock journalist for a fanzine whom met Ian when interviewing the band and they fell in love, although he was already married to Deborah and had a daughter with her..Deborah knew about Annik and several times Ian promised her that he would end it with her but he just couldn't do it, which was why Deb' told Ian that she wanted a divorce from him not long before his suicide..the song describes the situation that he was in 100% perfectly in every way..and I'm amazed that no one else has informed you of this fact over the past 9 years!!! |
