Suzanne Vega – Solitude Standing Lyrics | 7 years ago |
I've listened to this song on repeat all afternoon. I believe it is divinely inspired. Personally, I think this song is about learning to grow by delving into self rather than searching externally for something or someone else to comfort or save you. I especially love the lines: "And she turns to me with her hand extended Her palm is split with a flower with a flame." Flowers are beautiful, and they often represent growth. Flames can symbolize passion and pain. Together, they can embody enlightenment (e.g. the lotus). The woman's hand - or solitude - is extended to the writer so that she may grow from whatever it is she is experiencing in her life at the moment. Of course, it is her choice whether or not she chooses to learn her lessons then and move on or remain in an uncomfortable situation unchanged. For me, the second line alludes to the fact that we must take some time to ourselves so that we may grow, even though that means we will most likely experience some pain in the process. *The lines that follow continue in the same vein: "And she says, 'I've come to set a twisted thing straight.' And she says, 'I've come to lighten this dark heart.' And she takes my wrist; I feel her imprint of fear And I said, 'I never thought of finding you here.'" *Whatever it is that the writer is going through is going to be resolved by time alone. She may have a heavy heart and be fearful, but after thoughtful consideration, she will find her way out feeling better about herself, her life, and her experiences. I believe the entire song is about gaining insight into one's own mind, body, and life. (The following lines also make me wonder if the whole song could have been written about a more personal experience the writer might understand while sitting alone in her dressing room before going onstage. "I turn to the crowd as they're watching They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm I wanted to be in there among them I see how their eyes are gathered into one." She may be suffering from performance anxiety and searching for internal relief before going onstage. Perhaps, she does so by seeking solitude in her dressing room beforehand, surrendering herself to the fear, and letting it go rather than allowing herself to be consumed by it. Just a thought.) |
Jane's Addiction – Classic Girl Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[sokorny:15616] He starts out with this line: "4:05; in my neighborhood When shots go off, no one bothers." *What he's alluding to in these lines is that he comes from an area that's not idyllic. It's a rough area of town. Then, he goes on to say: "A "POP," and a reply "POP," and no reply..." *He's continuing with what he previously stated but adding more depth for the listener to understand just how dangerous the area he lives in is. Gunshots beget gunshots. Violence begets violence, and the end of the gunfire is just as ominous as the beginning because often when you quit hearing the shots, it means one party is no longer capable of returning fire because they've been mortally wounded. Then, he continues with: "Dinosaurs On the quilt I wore With a girl Such a classic girl. Such a classic girl." *Here he's reminiscing about a particular time he experienced with this girl (Casey Niccoli) under a quilt together. The assumption one would make is that they are naked together under that blanket, which means that they are in a romantic relationship, and he's stating that the love she gives him provides respite from the danger around them. |

@[Appers66:9827] You are right on about it being a Radiohead sample at the end. I've been trying to place it for a while. Thanks for the help. Btw...the lyrics are "Where do we go from here? The planet is a gunboat in a sea of fear." Thanks again. |

@[Dragonfly22:8230] Yes. I do. It clearly contains both of those lines. |
Taylor Swift – Bad Blood (feat. Kendrick Lamar) Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[RBLIL:7251] I think she's grown up into a beautifully talented woman. At some point, all "cute country girls" have to make a similar transition. The only difference is Taylor Swift is in the public eye. "1989" shows exactly how talented she is. She's light years ahead her pop contemporaries. She's also classy. I'm saying this as someone who has never been a big Swift fan. |
Cat Power – Nude as the News Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[bbuchsba:6405] Obviously, I know you're joking. But she's actually talking about an abortion she had at 20. Jesse and Jackson are the names of one of her favorite feminist heroes and artist's-Patti Smith-sons. So she decided to use their names in the song. |
Cat Power – Moonshiner Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[Adagio:6403]%Breezes It's both an old Irish folk song, which I believe she changes the lyrics to in order to fit her personal situation at the time, because not long after your post she admitted to being an alcoholic and both her problems with depression and loneliness, which often come along with any type of addiction. So, yes, it is about an alcoholic and the alcoholic she appears to be referring to is herself. |

In this version she's definitely saying: "Look up to see the weakness in the sky" And I think it fits with the verse and song better. https://youtu.be/ghNhDyxOZQk |

Lera Lynn – The Only Thing Worth Fighting For Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[woundstrain:4448] You're absolutely right. I'd been up for a very long while when I wrote this. Then, I copied and pasted the second part. The only reason I put the lyrics up on the page is because I've submitted lyric corrections to other songs in the past that still haven't been changed many months later. |

Beautiful Song. Here are the Full Lyrics: Waking up is harder Than it seems Wondering through these empty rooms Of dusty books and quiet dreams Pictures on the mantle Speak your name Softly like forgotten tunes Just outside the sound of pain Weren't we like a pair of thieves With tumbled locks and broken codes You cannot take that from me My small reprieves Your heart of gold Weren't we like a battlefield Locked inside a holy war Your love and my due diligence The only thing worth fighting for Change will come To those who have no fear But I'm not her You never were The kind who kept a rule book near What I said was never what I meant And now you see my world in flames My shadow songs My deep regret Weren't we like a pair of thieves With tumbled locks and broken codes You cannot take that from me My small reprieves Your heart of gold Weren't we like a battlefield Locked inside a holy war Your love and my due diligence The only thing worth fighting for |

@[culprit:4341] I think it's: "You have to want to stop being alone" (Which would also make sense.) |

Why are all of Cohen's song lyrics on this site to the wrong freaking Cohen song? Almost every single one. I've tried to edit again and again, but there is no change. It's becoming quite annoying to look up each time and see the lyrics to yet another Cohen song. |

Leonard Cohen – So Long, Marianne Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I've submitted changes. They haven't changed them, so here are the Actual Lyrics to THIS Leonard Cohen song. "So Long, Marianne" Come over to the window, my little darling, I'd like to try to read your palm. I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy before I let you take me home. Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry, And cry and laugh... About it all again. Well you know that I love to live with you, but you make me forget so very much. I forget to pray for the angels And then the angels forget to pray for us. Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry, And cry and laugh... About it all again. We met when we were almost young Deep in the green lilac park. You held on to me like I was a crucifix, as we went kneeling through the dark. Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry, And cry and laugh... About it all again. Your letters they all say that you're beside me now. Then why do I feel alone? I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web is fastening my ankle to a stone. Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry And cry and laugh... About it all again. For now I need your hidden love. I'm cold as a new razor blade. You left when I told you I was curious, I never said that I was brave. Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry, And cry and laugh... About it all again. Oh, you are really such a pretty one. I see you've gone and changed your name again. And just when I climbed this whole mountainside, To wash my eyelids in the rain. Oh so long, Marianne, it's time that we began... To laugh and cry, And cry and laugh... About it all again. |
Leonard Cohen – If It Be Your Will Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I've submitted changes. They haven't changed them, so here are all of the Actual Lyrics to THIS Leonard Cohen song: "If It Be Your Will" If it be Your will That I speak no more And my voice be still As it was before I will speak no more I shall abide until I am spoken for If it be Your will If it be Your will That a voice be true From this broken hill I will sing to you From this broken hill All Your praises they shall ring If it be Your will To let me sing From this broken hill All Your praises they shall ring If it be Your will To let me sing If it be Your will IF there IS a choice Let the rivers fill Let the hills rejoice Let Your mercy spill On all these burning hearts in Hell If it be Your will To make us well And draw us near And bind us tight All Your children here In their rags of light In our rags of light All dressed to kill And end this night If it be Your will If it be Your will |
Leonard Cohen – If It Be Your Will Lyrics | 9 years ago |
@[Balldozer:4121] I agree that the stanza you pointed out really adds a sting to the entire song. The reason I didn't +1 your comment is because I don't know that God is evil. I don't KNOW that God even exists. But I do believe that this song's meaning is most likely the opposite of what the majority of people seem to believe it means. It's like a lot of Leonard Cohen's songs, you must take them all with a grain of salt and realize everything has double or hidden meanings. Hell, half of the meanings are right there in front of our eyes and ears for all to see and hear, but people tend to miss them - just like the stanza you pointed out. I love this song (for that reason), as I do most all of Cohen's songs. His perfect poetic lyricism and bouts with sincerely deep depression give him a gift that most can not, nor will they ever, truly be able to understand. I think the two go hand-in-hand. They make him see both sides of every coin (good/evil, love/hate, etc.) and it gives him poetic license to both relate them to each other and tear them apart at the same time. I also think that's why he's so damn good at the having that pure sexual sadomasochistic edge he tends to throw right there at you in quite a few of his best songs, in my opinion. Okay. I'm done loving up on Lord Cohen tonight. Enjoy. |

Ryan Adams – Dirty Rain Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I think it's about the demise of a relationship. It sounds as if the last time they were at home together they were in the beginning stages - and being torn to pieces - by the realization that they were breaking up. Now time has passed, she's no longer waiting or crying. Although it saddens him, he understands. He even wishes her well. They've done their best to adjust to the fact that they are no longer together. It was a tough blow, but now they are just digging through the rubble of who they were and trying to move on in the process. |

Kings of Leon – Last Mile Home Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Obviously, it's dreaming. The other words don't even make sense in its place. Anyway, I've never been a fan of this band and doubt I will be in the future, but I like this song. It made me weep the first time I heard it. I actually thought it was some late 70's band and that I'd heard it long ago, but was quite surprised to find out I was wrong. I think the lyrics are very easy to interpret. The only thing left up to interpretation is whether or not his family/lover is at the home he's going to or if he's just dreaming about them on his last mile home alone. |
The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever Lyrics | 9 years ago |
@[baby:778] blue They were still using drugs after they returned from India. John actually came back and became much worse off than he was before. That's when he became addicted to Heroin, which is what this particular song is actually about. Strawberry Fields is a place near John's home. I've never heard of it in reference to acid, but it could be in some places. However, the fact that this song is about Heroin is painfully obvious when you read the lyrics. |
