Garbage – Vow Lyrics 10 years ago
I found out I'm partly right!!!!!!!

"Vow partly came from a newspaper article about a sado-masochistic couple who couldn't keep away from each other. But the songs aren't that literal. I don't want to spell it out but I want to make eclectic pop records that aren't what they seem." - Butch Vig
http://web.archive.org/web/20010212090050/http://www.garbage.com/press/articles/199603/top_40/article14-main4.html

"According to Vig, the inspiration for the song was a newspaper article about a woman who had gone back to get revenge on an abusive husband, "so we thought it would be cool to get a bit of retribution in there." Vig also said he noted violence could also come from psychological stand point by seeing the story of a sado-masochistic couple who could not keep away from each other. Lyrically, Manson claimed "'Vow' is about having feelings [of vengeance]. You have to face your feelings of revenge and work out why you feel that way. It's about that conundrum when you're really angry but in reality you're in a pitiful state. Angry, twisted, but deep down, vulnerable."" - WIkipedia

I know...
How would "coming back just like Jesus" mean vengeance?? According to the myth :) Jesus didn't return for vengeance, he returned to forgive all from all sins.

Either Shirley committed a huge mistake in the symbolism or there's a secret meaning to this song closer than what I say than "vengeance".

I'm not a native English speaker but "I can't stop when it comes to you" means affection AFAIK! Otherwise, could it mean an obsessive feeling for getting the person who burned her alive vengeance?

I know it looks like a gospel song but Conor said he's agnostic (or atheist) so this music isn't about God (or it was written when he was still in doubt perhaps), also in the same album there's "Ship Of Promises" which pretty much describes atheist experience - more in {Awayland}. I've seen other atheist using Christian metaphors and even word God (The Cardigans - Holy Love) so that wouldn't be uncommon.

I think it's a good idea to post this here:

"That particular song is a sort of inner monologue which is happening inside the head of a waitress in a nightclub in the Burj Khalifa as she finds an escape route through the caverns of her soul and dreams of her childhood and of the childhood of the human race in general. It’s about the liberating power of self-education." - Villagers

A Camp – My America Lyrics 11 years ago
It's about how the United States (or we can also say, England) transmits an image to the rest of the world like it's the perfect country, the perfect culture, economy, and way of doing all kinds of things, etc., when in reality they're abusing of your natural and even human resources, making war, killing directly and indirectly, encouraging and forcing other countries to have people working in a sub-conditions job to keep up in the economy system exporting products to them. They're able to see all the misery in many parts of the world, it's the richest country but they won't help! All US does is trade agreements that in the end will ultimately benefit it more than the other country in question.

We're bombarded with crap music, eating habits and fast food from multinational corporations from there, we're teach to dream about traveling and living in the "the best nation in the world"... The great majority of people simply never stop to think about it, to think how fake it's, how egoist it's. The song is about how the countries fall like a duck to this country's seducing manners. The singer is playing the role of a country or citizen that has been blind by this rockstar-like US, innocently handing everything it has.

Sang in the perfect tone by Nina Persson! :)

:'(

You still have feelings for this person but she doesn't care about it...

I wanted to comment to highlight the "water and poetry" part. I think there's a metaphor connecting raising flowers inside your chest and watering maybe... to maintaining/raising your feelings for her?
And here in Brazil it's common for some writers (poets) to call themselves or other "lovers" as poets on their works. I never specially liked it but The Cardigans done it so well I actually like it now!

The Cardigans – Rise and Shine Lyrics 11 years ago
The record label strategy to release Life replacing some songs with Emmerdale ones diminished the geniality of The Cardigans album. They threw some songs from Emmerdale and removed even the unique closing song just to maintain the status quo on US (the songs removed are more alternative than the rest of the album)!

I also wanted to comment on this particular song because it has two versions. In the one from Emmerdale Nina's voice is very raw, the way of singing and the music in overall is different. On the first time you hear it you may find it strange if you listened to the Life's recording first, but after the first time you'll only want to hear the Emmerdale version! *-*

About Life track listing and ordering, I strongly suggest everyone to listen to the original one, with no Rise

The Cardigans – A Good Horse Lyrics 11 years ago
I had to come back to say I got it wrong. It isn't about being a horse to someone. lol

Rather, it's about declaring you're living the life and keeping the promises you can (which in the end you can think you're declaring that to someone). I think the metaphor is "riding" is "living". A new way of living.

This song aways gives me chills... "I've fed it with a shaky hand"
It's so perfect... I love The Cardigans!

It isn't a song about dying, this is suicide.

She said "I feel for you my friend 'Cause I'll soon be leaving", she planned her death. Nothing can amaze her anymore in life and she's already ready to let go all her things "Since all I had been said free".

YES! You NEED to listen to this song from Nina, very atheist. It's truly great!
I was really wanting more after I listened to songs like "Godspell" and "Do You Believe?" from The Cardigans, and I'm really glad I dig to find this!

Come on baby sing
Of the oddness of the lord
It's about time we sang
Of the strange ways of the lord
The oddness of the lord
The oddness of the lord

Come on baby sing
Of the oddness of the lord
The strange ways of the lord
The sacred and the cursed
It's never getting better, no no no
It's only getting worse

Come on people sing
Of the oddness of the lord
Everybody sing
Of the strange ways of the lord
The oddness of the lord
The sacred and the cursed

It's never getting better
No no no
It's only getting worse
It's never getting better, no no no

A Camp – Such A Bad Comedown Lyrics 11 years ago
Fuck, even on A Camp lyrics there are these stupid people that think the song is about drugs...

"my dear chemical lover" - I's just how the singer elaborates on how she loved (actually still loves) that person. The singer is Nina Persson, and she looks to be very smart (kind of obvious with her lyrics, since Emmerdale!), and the scientists know love (and all other emotions) are caused by chemical (brain cathexes). Love is comparable to drugs because we feel satisfied when we get it: we alleviate a tension of wanting love (or the good feeling of it, good feeling of drugs - lol, I never did drugs but just saying...) but then the tension will start again on our brains and we have to make our cells calm again. Another example is the relation of satisfaction of hungry and eating food, etc, basically our brains function like that, it's the pleasure principle, not drugs.

Making "monday a saturday" - The person makes the singer so happy it turns even the most demotivating days such as Mondays (start of the week, of the job, etc, of most people).

This song is beautiful... Unique sound of cellos... *___*
It's about missing someone. :(

The Cardigans – Our Space Lyrics 11 years ago
This beat is sick!!!!!!!!!! I love it. :D

I'll try to elaborate what I think of this song without talking too much...
This is a song about a couple who cares so much about what other people think and opine on their relationship and life (perhaps they're not very accepted by friends and family), that they're prejudiced by it.

Now one of them is highlighting this to the partner: the relationship, the space, is theirs and they can't allow people to interfere in such a way. Telling him to not care about the bad things these people have to say and stop letting them to invade *your space* and disturb the love and desires they fell to each other. It's really your own choice to listen to them or not so when she sings "invented the fear" it means exactly that, that this fear (of what people suggest / said / will say) is only inside.

"- Where did "Beloved Freak" come from?
- In a funny way, I think that's a song to ourselves. As a band, we've always felt a little misunderstood, and we realize, even with this new record, it's sort of the same situation. We're just oddballs, and we always will be. At this point in our lives, rather than feel like victims of being left out, we're like, "Fuck it!" We're renegades. We're doing things on our own terms, and that's fine. Whenever you do choose to live in a way that's different from other people, they're very fast to call you a freak, weirdo, or oddball. That can feel very exclusive. As a human being, you have to invert that idea and say, "We're doing things on our own terms. This is how we see things. I will do what I think is right not what everybody else tells me is right, and that's okay."

- Does that become easier as you grow up?
- I don't know. Maybe, I don't mature as fast as everybody else, but I feel like it remains a challenge no matter how old you become. To me, it feels like a challenge to fit in and connect with people on a meaningful level. Maybe, I feel out of step. I don't know if it does get easier. I think your understanding of it gets deeper and therefore it's not as torturous. I have a feeling I will remain an oddball for the rest of my life [Laughs]. No matter how old I bloody well get [Laughs]! I'll be rocking the pink perm and I'll still feel out of things! Who knows? Who cares at this point?"

Although this is a sad song it's almost impossible to feel like that.

This is a masterpiece, maybe this song defines the difference between someone who listen to junk pop music and THE CARDIGANS kind of music. If you can listen to this song and like it, you are very special to me. :)

This gives me chills, it has an unique rhythm and I can now understand what some musicians says the voice is an instrument... That last part... This is Nina using his voice as a BEAUTIFUL AWESOME instrument.

Garbage – Blood For Poppies Lyrics 12 years ago
I think I got the song.
Shirley said "it's a song about disorientation and delusion and the human struggle to stay sane in the face of insanity".

It's about living, staying alive. I think it's a metaphor for when you need to(/is) work(ing) hard in your life, in your job, everything, you're tired, you can't even go play a little with your dog because you're really bad (seriously) - the hard life of a soldier, the isolation suggested can be interpreted in our lives as a psychological isolation we build because we just can't take it -... And like, there are people or something else that keep disturbing you (don't live you alone, in peace, don't let you concentrate), the world is disturbing you - that's the radio -, yet you can't stop! You need to keep on moving!

I'm so glad Garbage is back, I never listened to their songs properly before and now I'm a big fan and bought the new album to support them, it's awesome!

It's a song anti the conservative thinking!

Apart from LGBT and feminism it also makes me think of how prostitution is a taboo and how people care so much about other people's sexual lives.

There's a girl, she wanna have sex, the body is hers', she does it! There's *nothing* wrong with that, no, she isn't a whore, she just do whatever she wants with her body. (this is applicable to any sex you ought to be)

Garbage – Not Your Kind Of People Lyrics 12 years ago
I think about people who have nothing in their minds (just white noise), rich people, religious people, ordinary people who only think of themselves, people who don't like you because of the differences...

As I'm very different from everybody in various aspects, I can really relate to lyrics. I also have a little of social phobia, I'll just copy a part of the song that's perfect.

"Running around trying to fit in,
Wanting to be loved.
It doesn't take much.
For someone to shut you down.
When you build a shell,
Build an army in your mind.
You can't sit still.
And you don't like hanging round the crowd.
They don't understand"

We close ourselves inside a shell... We have anxiety so we can't sit still when we're around other people, being observed. It's difficult to feel comfortable with people, you don't know if they'll understand the kind of people you're.

When we get to the end of the song... I need to comment the album too! It's about accepting you as you are, unique, extraordinary. :3

Recently I accepted myself as I'm and I stopped caring about what people will think about me, how they'll judge me. The people seem to aways want something from us, they want us to be extroverted and speak at all times. Well, I can't give them that, I'm very introspective and quiet, I try a little but they'll simply have to accept me this way.
* Check the amazing comment by lightdivided in "Man On A Wire": http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107859431743/#73016146867

We can't live our lives with the necessity of being understood. Whoever is reading this, I give you this advice: be yourself, understand yourself and don't care about what other people will think.

I'm not sure about it but I've made an interpretation of this part of the song:
"You dropped by as I was sleeping. / You came to see the whole commotion." -> "She" (you) had your eyes closed to the solutions, you were asleep in the middle of your suffering.
"And when I woke I started laughing. / The jokes on me for not believing." -> But then you realize you can't be shaken by this kind of feeling, you accept yourself, you wake up and laugh at the jokes people made(/make) of you. Perhaps "believing" is related to the "lies" told by these people in the world. I'm giving a loosely interpretation here.

I'd be very thanked if someone could put a light on this stanza. :)

Garbage – Vow Lyrics 12 years ago
I thought this song was actually about a kind of obsessive love!? I still have this opinion. Let me to explain.

I think this song is about a complicated human being, that when enters in a relationship with someone there are problems (there's a wide range of what it could be: like you feel it's difficult to love, you're not used to love, unprepared..., when it's hard to show your love or support the one you're with, when it's complicated to deal with your feelings, etc) but the main reason I think when I listen to this song is that you live a life where you get disappointed by your lover by whatever happened, and also maybe you don't know how to deal with your humor and it affects your relationship.

In the song she sings she is having difficulties and tells him how she will bring him down with them and also about how she makes a relationship complicated and the partner is bringing her down because he doesn't know how to deal with her. Even so you truly love the person you are with, so no matter how you're disappointed or this person is not enough for you, you keep coming back to him/her.

I'm atheist so I usually don't like religion references in songs but this one gave me chills:
"You crucified me but I'm back in your bed / like Jesus Christ coming back from the dead"
It summarizes the song as I interpret it: the partner doesn't know how to deal with her and brings her down, she is very affected by this, she nearly dies! Actually she dies (psychologically, she is very weak) she understands in the end that she is a very hard person and still loves him unconditionally because *it isn't his fault*, so she forgives and comes back. And this is exactly how the crucification of Jesus Christ was (hypothetically, as I don't believe Jesus existed) - Jesus/God love and forgive romans. This part, "I'm back at your bed", together with "I can't stop when it comes to you" support my vision she loves the person.

So when I listen to this I don't think about revenge at all, even when the band itself explained it's about vengeance, I know how this theme would fit in some parts of the song but not in others. Isn't it strange how the meaning can differ from person to person?
It's a very complicated song, and the sound of the band is aways amazing, I love it!

Garbage – Silence Is Golden Lyrics 12 years ago
The second part can still be about "shyness".

"I have been broken" - people influenced you to be this way someway ("something was stolen" - sorry I can't really say what, but something [kind of your capacity to talk], if you're The Quiet One you'll feel it)
"nobody gets in" - nobody gets into you, your thoughts, feelings
"my body is a temple" - complement to the phrase above, you're "safe in my own skin" - you keep the things to yourself

This song is so good!!! I'm a quiet one.

This can be about having a discussion with somebody and how exciting it's, how the confrontation of ideologies makes your heart beat faster! And I like thinking this way!

For me the music video also gives some clues about it as there are references to commonly discussed themes such as religion and extraterrestrial life form. Maybe it's an alternative idea of the song behind the original meaning.

It's about a couple who doesn't have a good communication in the moment. The singer wants they keep together.

But the thing I like most to think about when listening is in how it explain well timidity, you can pretend the singer is singing about how it's hard to speak and how shy people feel when they keep there in silence. That's why I like this song, I'm one of these people.

"I know what you're thinking" when you keep imagining what other people are thinking about you and what you're going to say then what you really want is the other person say or do something to break the ice ("I wish you'd make your move").

"It's like you know where I'm going / You follow me home / But I never invite you inside" the person is interested in be your friend, know you... The person "know where you're going" = the person know you're thinking, maybe going to speak, "follow you home" = wants you to speak, "but I never invite you inside" = you never expresses what you're feeling, you never talk because of shyness.

"Don't stop, don't stop
Telling me goodnight
Just promise you'll kiss me goodbye
What's taking so long?
Don't tell me you're not gonna try
The tension's building in my mind
I wanna scream and I know why"

This part is really more romantic but you can get it like you wanting the person interested in your friendship don't give up on you because you're timid, you want to scream because of shyness.

That's it... The good thing is I'm getting better at timidity because my psychologist is helping me. :)
