Torquil Campbell – Brooklyn, August, 1998 Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Was listening to the song passively while working. I liked it very much but hadn't sat down with the lyrics. After many listens, the arc of the lyrics "turn off the lights when you leave... want them to know we're away... take anything you need here" pierced right through the filters. And I thought, what, did he just say he wants to be stolen from?! I typed up the lyrics because I had to hear the story. So Canadian. So Torquil. One of the sweetest things I've heard in a while. |
Thrice – Blood on the Sand Lyrics | 7 years ago |
Blood on the sand? Is the idea meant to refer to blood washing up on the beach from foreign shores? If so, I guess the joke is that it would take tons of blood to be spilt on oceans to have it noticed domestically. |
The Fray – Syndicate Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[jeniusAlways:13561] Whoa. That makes sense. The other argument that people are making of hundreds of miles down referring to a lover is irrational |
David Ramirez – Stone Lyrics | 7 years ago |
People were saying that the "'oh' and 'hey'" line is a reference to The Lumineers song 'Ho Hey'. Maybe it is, but I studied his live performance of the song and I'm pretty sure that the lyrics are supposed to say 'oh', not 'ho'. It might be a broader reference. Let me know if anyone finds proof otherwise. |
General Ghost – Cloud Cover Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I'm 99% sure this song is referring to the biblical story of the people of Israel in the desert in Exodus. Not entirely sure what they mean by cloud cover - if it's referring to -symbolism of a bad omen or -how there's inherent darkness that's tied to us wherever we go or if -cloud cover is supposed to be a promise of a constant chance at forgiveness for whenever we decide to look up at the heavens Nice song regardless. Really high quality stuff. These people got better with every album. |
Zach Williams – I'm Losing You Slowly (Live) Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[cmbanks00:7235] Awesome! How'd you know? |
Massive Attack – Pray for Rain Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[acidtonic:6559] It's really frustrating when the cd doesn't include the lyrics. But I'd like to think of it as swirling dust too. It really helps keep the theme of nuclear warfare consistent throughout the album, even though swirling doves in the way others have used it is more than fitting. |
Massive Attack – Pray for Rain Lyrics | 8 years ago |
@[ravesin:6558] Great stuff. Agreed with most of it. To me, though, the "hearts and wings commence to beating" is a reference the polarized reception of prayers half-answered. It rained but sparsely. That would reignite the faith of some but would cause others to abandon their faith and location. So, to me, the reference to unseen woods is the hope in a better place- either from the notion of the passing of the current or (maybe) the cynic's hope that at least there could be a better place with more sustenance here on Earth, away from the tribe (and where the proverbial wings would take you). Regardless, the repetition of setting at the end is a subtle enough way to say "don't expect too much when hoping for a better place". |
Thrice – Yellow Belly Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Yellow Belly and crimson hands is too specific. Anyone know what yellow belly refers to? Immediately on first listen I thought of a snake. I don't get snakes where I'm from but it sounded like a reference to a species of snake. As I listen to it more, I get the vibe that it could be a pun on turtles. Hear me out, yellow belly turtles with red heads is a common turtle. Maybe it's some sort of a reference to cowardice and substituting crimson head with crimson hands (definitely the correct lyrics) could be the substitution of personality cowardice for violent manifestations of cowardice. Any thoughts? |
Heath McNease – Thrift Store Jesus Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Thanks a ton for the corrections. It took me long enough to get the references I did. |
Counting Crows – Colorblind Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It's super crazy how a song - the words, melodies and vibes -can express someone else's completely-different experiences. The same words mean different things in different lights, so it's to be understood. That's pretty cool. |
Counting Crows – Colorblind Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I've given that "Sometimes they just are there to rhyme" perspective some lots of thought, actually. With all the analyzing that people do, always looking for deeper meaning to things because we're wired that way, it just makes sense that a great deal of what we analyze and tie our thoughts to aren't anywhere near our theories. A lot of stuff could completely be circumstantial. I mean, look at all the "masterpieces" that we analyze in high school literature classes... Even assuming that everyone had the same writing abilities as those high-class writers, there's still bound to be human mistakes in things that break the analogies and such. We follow that analytical mindset all our lives, often adding meaning where there might be none. But what if there is meaning, just not in ways that can be packaged into words? Amos Lee said in a track-by-track explanation of Hello Again (a song that the fans were convinced was tailored to an individual) that he had no idea what the song was about. It was something along the lines of "I don't know, man, it could be about a family member or a girl, or ****, maybe myself". A big part of artistry is the instinct. Some things just feel right for some reason and we can't explain why. Artists can't explain why they make every single decision they make because, quite frankly, they don't know. They rely on their instincts to guide them through the songs. But hey, a little applied psychology and we might even be able to explain to the artists about their songs the things that even they don't know. |
Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Lol. You cite a wikipedia article on baptism as proof of anything relevant here? You probably wrote in a rush of emotion or something. But it was a funny conclusion. Thanks! |
Amos Lee – Violin Lyrics | 11 years ago |
For the longest time these lyrics have driven me nuts. We finally got a lyric video so I guess the debate is over. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5raMzavYgE |
Young the Giant – St. Walker Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Thanks! The part that confused me was the cloves reference. Thank God for the internet. That's not really something we use in my culture. Not to mention that no one I know uses the word "street walker", as opposed to other vulgar terms. Maybe the contradiction of the cloves and the name of the song with her being a prostitute is an argument towards saints in general. That what we consider holy at times is a result of blissfully ignoring aspects of that something that cloud that ideal image that we want to have- and in this over exaggerated case, the aspect that is being under-shadowed is one that happens to be the exact opposite of the "saint" aspect. I know it sounds confusing, but it's a little far-fetched anyway. Regardless, this really sets the bar. |
Jon Mclaughlin – Falling Lyrics | 11 years ago |
You rock. This is what the world needs. I just got the CD. Everyone has the Forever If Ever album lyrics up, which is missing a couple of songs from this record. You just saved everyone a bit of trouble from here on out by handwriting this. Awesome job! |
The Fray – Where The Story Ends Lyrics | 12 years ago |
How are you so sure? I think it says something more along the lines of "this century he's twenty"... I know it doesn't seem to make much sense, but watching the Fair Fight documentary, I've seen how they had to change the lyrics a lot from the originals, especially with this song. So this is probably a piece of a version of the song that they loved and wanted to include even if it didn't land the song it was made for. So it'd make sense if it would say "century" or something, since the line in "Where The Story Ends" (the original song this is from) that corresponds to that line says the word "century"... |

Awesome perspective. It makes a whole lot more sense now. |

Crap. It really does. That has to be so awkward for a fan of both bands ;) |

I have the CD and the lyrics are correct. Just sayin'. |
Matt Hires – Out Of The Dark Lyrics | 12 years ago |
What an amazing song. The lyrical composition is so solid and formal. This song has become a sort of anthem, because I haven't heard of many songs with a similar line to "'Cause the world I've discovered, it feels nothing like my heart." I've only found Between The Trees's "Scarecrow" to have that vibe. The phrase "I'm busy erasing voices of the dead" never had a quite obvious meaning, but if you look at the context, you might notice something. The second part of the first verse mentions negative thoughts and concludes them with the line "I wanna replace this darkness in my head". So, when I looked back to see if the first part of the first verse had the same format, there it was. Hires opened the song with thoughts of reduction (I'm burned out and wasted. I'm tired of pacing.). If you follow the format that follows, it seems that he uses "...erasing voices of the dead" to refer to that feeling that you get when you're overcome with negative thoughts and you're trying to shake them off; so maybe "voices of the dead" refers to all the aspects of his thought process that come from a place of waste. I could be reading too much into it, but I'd like to believe that the song is really just written that well. The rest of the song makes a lot of sense. That was the only part of the song that I couldn't digest. Awesome. |
Matthew Perryman Jones – Until the Dawn Appears Lyrics | 12 years ago |
**Take (fixed below:) I’ve been turning up the stones in my own discontent And I’m finding out where all my hidden sorrows went They’ve been laying there for years, I kept them out of use (you?) But it's time I dust you off and take a good look at you Oh how long? Oh How long? Oooh Well, it's easier to clench your first and grind your teeth Then to look into the sadness that lives underneath You can kill off all those feelings They’ll just turn to ghosts They will take over your house and become the host Oh how long? Oh how long? Oooh Well, the man of sorrows walked the shores of Galilee And his eyes were cast with joy towards the crystal sea Well, the shadows will be gone and all these bitter tears And my heart will hang on that until the dawn appears Oh how long Oh how long Oh you, you won’t let me go Oh no, no. Oh no you won’t let me go Oh no, oh no, you won’t let me go Oh no, oh no you won’t let me go |
Paper Route – Sugar Lyrics | 12 years ago |
At first listen, I wasn't too thrilled with the following release, but I've gained a new outlook on the album that I'm really excited about now. Thanks for the reflection, I think it's well worth having read. |
Paper Route – Better Life Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Thanks for this! By the way, I don't think it's "better least" at the end of the second verse, but "but at least" |
Mat Kearney – Bullet Lyrics | 12 years ago |
By George, I think you've cracked the code! Great thought. |
Mat Kearney – Bullet Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Ha! It may be completely off, but this is such an awesome point. It just goes to show that there's so much we can learn from each other; how the same word could mean so many different things to just one person, and you could widen that scope infinitely. It really is amazing and the fact that this site exists shows that we might actually care what each other might have to say. It's a good day, today, five years later. Just letting you know :) |

The Classic Crime – My Weapon of Choice Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wow dude. This was great. I've been trying to map down the context of that line for the longest and you just nailed it like if it was nothing. Just understanding that little line makes me feel rewarded for having kept the song. I didn't like it too much and I was considering deleting it, but knowing The Classic Crime's philosophical hooks, I didn't want to overlook anything. Thanks a lot. |
Amos Lee – Out of the Cold Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Lyrics are very wrong, but I can't make out much more than you did. According to another source at songlyrics, they got something more sensical: Yes, I dug you in a bulletproof vest, But you can't walk straight with a bullet in your chest, Another man down with the flag to fold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold. Two.. and I never want to see you cry, Not the same can be said for his brand new bride Inspired love but no hand to hold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold, Mmmm, mmm, mmm. Looking at the pictures upon the shelf, Feel I'm in shadow, feeling sad 22 years, still you feel so old It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold, It takes a lot of love and comin' out of cold. Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm. |

Amos Lee – Supply and Demand Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Replaced all the error marks: Somethin' gotta give with the way I'm livin' Seems I'm gettin' down everyday The more I strive, the less I'm alive And seems i'm gettin' further away Oh well all my superstitions and my crazy suspicions Of the people that I care about I been doin' more screamin' than i been doin' dreamin' And I think it's time I figured it out Yeah baby I need a plan to understand That life ain't only supply and demand I been goin' joggin' in the park after dark Draggin' 'round with me my ball and chain Took southern skies to make me realize That I'm causin' myself this pain The woman that I'm lovin' yeah I'm pushin' and shovin' Getting further on by the day And I can't understand how the heart of this man Ever let it end up this way Yeah baby I need a plan to understand That life ain't only supply and demand When the road gets dark and lonesome dear You can find me here But honey you don't know where I am You need a friend yeeaahh Life ain't easy in fact I know it's sleazy When you're the big man in town Shakin' religions and makin' decisions You never get slow on down Well your wife and your baby you tell them yeah well maybe I'll meet y'all at a weekend resort Put your eyes on the prize and you can realize Your little girl's life's so short Brother you need a plan to understand That life ain't only supply and demand Yeah sister you need a plan to understand That life ain't only supply and demand Hey, you better figure it out now You know you ain't comin' back down, yeah You better figure it out now You know you ain't comin' back down |
