Steven Wilson – Happy Returns Lyrics 8 years ago
@[jpdwebb:7492] Regarding your first paragraph: I understand it tied to the previous line. She has gifts for the children and sorrow for him by her coming (whether via her telling tales of woe or they dealing/not-dealing with problems between eachother).

The name Elizabeth is partially influenced by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as well as his wife's great-aunt, who is named Elizabeth.

David Bowie – As the World Falls Down Lyrics 10 years ago
I played this song for one of the first few songs of the reception. I also used two other songs from the soundtrack for the bridesmaids walk up the aisle and then mine. Many compliments on the choices from guests. I see you posted this quite a long time ago, but still had to comment.

Marillion – Incommunicado Lyrics 12 years ago
Wrong Lyrics. Here they are:

I'd be really pleased to meet you if I could remember your name
But I got problems of the memory ever since I got a winner in the fame game
I'm a citizen of Legoland travellin' incommunicado
And I don't give a damn for the Fleet Street aficionados

But I don't want to be the back-page interview
I don't want launderette anonymity
I want my hand prints in the concrete on Sunset Boulevard
A dummy in Tussaud's you'll see

Incommunicado, incommunicado

I'm a Marquee veteran, a multimedia bona fide celebrity
I've got an allergy to Perrier, daylight and responsibility
I'm a rootin'-tootin' cowboy, the Peter Pan, the street credibility
Always taking the point with the dawn patrol fraternity

Sometimes it seems like I've been here before
When I hear opportunity kicking in my door
Call it synchronicity call it deja vu
I just put my faith in destiny - it's the way that I choose

But I don't want to be a tin can tied
To the bumper of a wedding limousine
Or currently residing in the where are they now file
A toupee on the cabaret scene
I want to do adverts for American Express cards
Talk shows on prime time TV
A villa in France, my own cocktail bar
And that's where you're gonna find me

Incommunicado, incommunicado

Sometimes it seems like I've been here before
When I hear opportunity kicking in my door
Call it synchronicity call it deja vu
I just put my faith in destiny - it's the way that I choose

Incommunicado, incommunicado
It's the only way

Marillion – I Will Walk On Water Lyrics 12 years ago
(Garden Party accidentally posted instead. Here are the correct lyrics)

Something is coming out of the rain, magic
It's happening again, like the last time
I don't know how it happens, but I know what to do
Coming up from the ground, I think it's you

I will walk on the water

You sent me the red sun and the purple sky
Cirrus clouds and grins
Atoms of roses
The power to do anything
In the chaos of colours
And the fluttering of wings
You carry me up
And I'm free again

Don't let anyone tell you
This is impossible
What we have here is bigger than fear

I will walk on water

Don't let anyone tell you
This is impossible
Hold on to me
Believe what you see

I will walk on water

Fish – Family Business Lyrics 12 years ago
A pretty straight forward tale of being the neighbor who knows a woman/children are in an abusive situation and choosing not to get involved. There is guilt along side the decision. I have always liked to think that at some point when the song is over, the neighbor offers some type of help. I had a neighbor in a similar situation (abuse) and when she finally did flee, she took time to thank me. I had not done much, simply said to her one day over morning coffee that when she was ready to go, I would do whatever I could to help. I never demanded details or pushed her; we both knew I could hear the noises across the apartment hallway. When she thanked me months after that comment was made, she said hearing that alone gave her enough strength to prepare her exit.

The Tea Party – Emerald Lyrics 12 years ago
I think "emerald" is an endearment, either due to eye color or indicating the person is precious (I lean toward the latter). I also believe this is a song about telling a love interest that he will wait for her to be able to leave a bad situation/state of mind she is in (several types come to mind). He is advising her to do what she can to cope until she is able to leave. He is giving her strength with the knowledge that he understands and will be there for her when she is ready.

Meat Loaf – Bat Out Of Hell Lyrics 12 years ago
According to "The Indispensable Book of Useless Information: Just When You Thought It Couldn't Get Any More Useless-It Does" by Donal Voorhees this song "is about a motorcycle crash where the rider's organs are thrown from his body." That is it (and that is plenty!). None of it is a metaphor for anything else - it is all a dramatic description of a deadly motorcycle crash.

Drive-By Truckers – Used to Be a Cop Lyrics 13 years ago
To me (a woman) this song can be metaphorical. Despite very clearly being a tale about a person, I also see it as a description of anyone that never quite "made it". Everything they attempted never quite worked and looking back it is just sad. So sad.

Fuel – Falls on Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I could certainly see that interpretation. That is one of the beauties of ambiguous songs like these. A deeply religious person can find connection on that level, also a generally spiritual person, but at the same time a person who is neither can still find a message that they can relate to. *NOTE: I am not guessing as to whether this was written deliberately ambiguous, just that it is.

Marillion – Hooks In You Lyrics 13 years ago

Marillion – An Accidental Man Lyrics 13 years ago
A male friend of mine (who was abused as a child) felt very connected to this song. I believe the abuse (several types and quite severe) stripped away not only his connectedness to himself, but also makes it difficult for him in the outside world. He logically and socially understands what it means to be a man in our society and in our time period, but is unable to find a way to be that. I think of him whenever I hear this song. This song breaks my heart.

submissions
Marillion – A Collection Lyrics 13 years ago
Now, I seem to recall (correct me if I am wrong) that this is suppose to be a love song of sorts, about collection of photographs; it is suppose to be a sweet song.

For me, personally, it is very creepy. I love it, but it is dark for me. I experience it as a stalker/obsessive/possibly even a serial killer-type person singing to someone.

Fish – Mr. 1470 Lyrics 13 years ago
"1470" itself has to do with the skull (KNM-ER 1470) found in 1972 in Africa. It was believed to be a bridge between two already "known" steps in the development of modern humans. I understand that eventually it had been determined not to be part of that line. At the time this song was written I think (but might be remembering wrong) that KNM-ER 1470 was still being argued as a possible bridge, but more and more experts were coming to believe it was a different species.
