either that, or it's just another 'forbidden love' trope where the author is misunderstood/considered-'unsuitable' for some reason...

IMO it's a song about being on the Aromantic spectrum, or perhaps Demisexual; and the difficulties associated. Being misunderstood by other people who subscribe to mundane notions of relationships.

"Thought you'd be forever the same
When did you become so easy to change?"
-Romantic expression and flirting can seem so superficial to Aromantics: why do all the weird flirting and mating rituals when you could just save us both a lot of energy and confusion by being your authentic self?

"There will be no unguarded kisses,
Let go of my hand when they're around"
-Public displays of affection... WHY?!? Let's not do that.

"They say I'm unsound
But what do they know?
They can't figure out how to get down"
-They think /I'm/ the weird one? Like... Have you SEEN people try to be romantic with each other?

"Soon enough I won't care
Stay in my arms, if you dare
You can't romanticize
They are crazy"
-I like you; please stop worrying about what other people think. Don't define OUR relationship by OTHER people's expectations...

"Will only let you down
Try to figure out, how to keep you down
They're all alone"
-Real Connection is deeper than Romance. Don't let people who haven't found real connection dissuade you from finding it for yourself.

"I will keep you down"
This /is/ relationship to me: 'climb higher' without me if you want.

Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's a very beautiful, but sad song. My interpretation is that it was written about how societies were more populated than there had ever been before - but also more deprived of reality and humanity than previous societies. It is a song about death - death of cultural capital and the warmth of genuine human interaction that comes with it. It's (unwittingly perhaps) referring to the monumental economic failures of the 20th century - where production of things and the GDP of nations exploded amongst the prevalence of commercialism/pop-culture etc, but the actual quality of people's lives was only marginally increased. In some ways humans were more active and alive than ever: just not in ways that were actually valuable to humans. Hence - sentiments of falsity, and the eerie feelings that come with exposure to hyper-reality. It seems to be a song about things that the author felt were missing from his society.

I like this interpretation. It seems that much literature may be described as 'a footnote to Plato'...

The White Stripes – Little Room Lyrics 12 years ago
I would guess that it's not so much about moving back into the little room, but having forgotten what was good about the little room in the first place... Beyond that; i think the song pretty much explains itself... u start with something good, but then you get a bigger room for it, but then you can't remember the start so well... coz your in a new room... *smiles*

Powderfinger – Oipic Lyrics 12 years ago
This is mostly guesses, and I don't have comments on all of the lyrics either, but here goes:

"One superjudge that brings a change in taste"

-Keeping in mind that 'taste' refers to the sentiments/dispositions that people have towards art etc, this may be referring to a new Artist/Critic who is very influential...

"The new seasons king with a brand new face
The old seasons bloom seemed to run its race
And we standby for your word"

-This seems to refer to 'the old season's bloom' as what has been considered tasteful by the previous generation, 'seemed to run it's race' would mean that those ideas have been spent, 'And we standby for your word' perhaps meaning that we're all waiting for the new Artist/Critic to give us the new perspective.

"Truth and intent will lose the day
Music's revenge to pave the way
Play favourites with a view to changing taste"

-'truth' (the old taste) 'and intent' (the interested attitude that the last generation has towards their own generation's art) 'will lose the day, music's revenge to pave the way' perhaps meaning: new music will vindicate the new ideas of tastefulness, and prevail over the old ideas. 'Play favourites with a view to changing taste' perhaps meaning: pick the side that has the winning attitude - i.e.: the dynamic side of the argument (the one with changing taste)

so ultimately my interpretation of the song is that it's something about -changing ideas- especially: ideas about what is tasteful/beautiful/true, through music.

Cat Power – Rockets Lyrics 13 years ago
I think lan56 is right. How do we go from innocent babies to being adults with ambitions and aspirations? I'd like to add some more interpretation- have you ever seen those 'mobiles' (I think they're called) that are hung over babies cots (beds)? Rockets are a common style of them. So maybe the babies are dreaming about the rockets that are hanging over their heads as they sleep. But I wonder if there's a further meaning in using the word rockets in posing that more fatal-nihilistic- question when does the things that we do actually accomplish anything? So maybe an extension of the chorus would be- 'in what (ore who's) world do hopes and ideals of men and women ever amount to anything meaningful?' Or- 'Why shoot a rocket into space if it isn't going to find a planet?' and 'how can achieving this actually be meaningful?'

but then the talk of 'keep your guns at home, keep your momma safe etc' sounds like it might be about something more than just what I managed to interpret, so it's puzzle. Great song.
