Im sure that the angel mentioned throughout is Azrael, the Angel of Death, who is also referred to as just Death, and like many have said its about someone who has attempted suicide though cyanide, and once taken it the character is having second thoughts about it and asking Death to let him stay, but ultimately asking to be taken away by calling death to him.
The narrator then seems to find peace in death and finally being buried having "peace at last"
