Demon Hunter – Death Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"By our very nature, we are a sinful people. It doesn't matter which side of the fence you stand on, that will always be the case. If you don't see it, you're not paying attention. There is no pretending to be impervious to it. The answer is revealed in the realization of its existence, and the understanding that you are in need of forgiveness. The wages of sin is death. Eternal death. My desire is to be an instrument for this revelation, but my words alone can only point the way. I am no savior." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Artificial Light Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"I've never understood a fan's soul-completing devotion to songs with a depiction of bleak circumstance, but vacant of any glimmer of solution. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually drawn to music that is dark and somber by it's very nature - obviously. I get it. But when I hear stories of how a band that sings about nothing but depression and desolation 'saved my life,' I wonder how. I know being able to relate to the struggle of others, and understanding that you're not alone in doing so, can be comforting... but is it enough? It's like the path getting clearer, easier... then finding it's a dead end." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – What I'm Not Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"The things that we are not, or the things we refuse to be, are often just as crucial to our character as those things that we aspire to be. In an age of zero boundaries and endless personal gratification, it's the things that we deny that truly set us apart. We're sold the idea that practically anything is acceptable, and we subscribe to a 'no regrets' way of life. The truth is that honest regret builds integrity. Opposing the flow of a nihilistic, self-absorbed culture is something to take pride in." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – The Last One Alive Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"Sometimes it can feel like we walk alone in our beliefs and convictions. Although I know this isn't the case, I'd like to think that if I were the only remaining person with my perspective, in the face of adversity, I would stand firm. The times you feel outnumbered and isolated can be those moments your stance rings the most true." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – I Will Fail You Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song;
"It can be easy to put people on a pedestal of unrealistic expectation. We often forget that every single one of us, no matter how seemingly perfect on the outside, is a broken individual. I've made it a point to be transparent about this in my own life through my lyrics. I never want to give the impression that I have it all figured out, or that every struggle lies behind me. It can be very freeing to understand that everyone, at some point, will fail. They will fail God, they will fail themselves, and they will fail you. Understanding grace and forgiveness is the only way to spare yourself the disappointment of the human condition." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – One Last Song Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"For me, making music goes beyond a compulsion or desire. There's something about it that feels overwhelmingly necessary. I've been extremely blessed to create music throughout the past two decades, and I am forever grateful to those that have appreciated it. It's something that I hope to be able to do for the rest of my life. I think that if I were to stop, a part of me would feel incomplete. This song is a hope for perpetual inspiration… that no song would ever be the last." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Cross to Bear Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"The story of the cross of Christ is sacred. It's most definitely not perceived that way by everyone, but it is for me. Expressing the hardships in life as your 'cross to bear' has become commonplace, but when I ponder its implication, is an insult to true and meaningful sacrifice. No burden you carry will ever compare to the weight of the world. The use of the word 'bastard' is this chorus is, in fact, contextual. Making a statement like this shows an obvious division between its conveyor and a Heavenly Father." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Hell Don't Need Me Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"I write about Hell a lot in Demon Hunter lyrics. It's not an analogy or metaphor. It's a place, albeit on more of a spiritual plane than a physical one, that I believe in. That's why I'm always deliberately capitalizing it. In the modern age, even within some religious institutions, it's become less and less popular to debate as anything remotely literal. I don't claim to know exactly what Hell is like, but I understand it to be a place devoid of God's presence. And I know I don't belong." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – In Time Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"In our modern age, it seems realistic and somewhat probable that our morals, values and ideals will become an ancient piece of history in the not-so-distant future. Our reverence for a creator has dwindled to a dying light in the shadow of a culture that mistakingly places God and science at odds. Our voice has become a feeble whisper, with a seemingly laughable resolution to a world gone completely out of its mind, drunk on celebrity worship, and self-exalting lies. And moral relativism is not only the social norm, but the only 'acceptable' mindset to have. It is our responsibility to see that our voice remains the vehicle of true solution to an otherwise damned civilization." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Beyond Me Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"Self-reliance would be sensible if only we were worthy of complete trust. There's freedom in recognizing that this isn't the case. We lie to ourselves, we lie to others, and often, despite knowing it, we can be our own worst enemy. There's a crippling pressure that comes with putting complete faith in ourselves. With a God that is willing to help carry our burden, why insist on bearing it all ourselves? We reject relief in the name of pride. Why anyone would choose such a lonely road is beyond me." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Gasoline Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"I understand that my worldview is not going to be shared by everyone that listens to a Demon Hunter song. As a matter of fact, I write with the hope that this is the case. But apologizing for my beliefs is something that I won't do. This song is an admission of my often unpopular ideals, and a back-handed promise to snuff out whatever damage I may have caused with… you guessed it… gasoline." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Waste Me Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"In the time I've been playing music, I've seen an unfortunate number of friends fall away from a faith that once seemed to mean everything to them. Some grew to see it as fleeting phase. Others became tired of being associated with a group of people whom, despite their own faults, were judgmental and unforgiving. I've experienced many of the same doubts, but the emptiness of this world and the flaws of its people seemed to refine and solidify my beliefs. I hope someone pulls the plug before I ever lose that faith." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Helpless Hope Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
"I believe there comes a time in everyone's life, sometimes on multiple occasions, when they experience the overwhelming urge to call out to God. More often than not, this comes in a time of need, a time of confusion or depression… a time when life has stopped making sense. In hindsight, the natural reaction is usually to consider these moments as a lapse of blind desperation. If we can't trust in the clarity of these crucial moments, we're fooling ourselves. This desire is not some learned ideology, but an inherent response of humankind. We feel it because it is the only final and true solution." - Ryan Clark

Demon Hunter – Cold Blood Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“The internet is one giant paradox. On one hand, it is an endless wealth of useful information… on the other hand it is ground zero for every kind of awfulness imaginable. Worst of all, it has become so deeply ingrained in us, that most of us cannot imagine life without it.

I’m no exception. What I do versus what I believe makes me very contradictory. I take part in social media yet simultaneously believe it to be, without a doubt, the most destructive force of our generation. Cold Blood is about my feelings on social media, the internet at large, and the distance it’s created among us.

Growing up in a pre-internet era, I can’t help but feel sorrow for those who were born in the wake of its necessity. As hard as it is to imagine, I would love to see a backlash. I believe there will be a time when a great number of people make the decision to truly distance themselves from it all."

Demon Hunter – One Step Behind Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“In the midst of writing this record, my wife and I had our first child. We named her Ryan after myself. This song is for her.

It’s true what they say: Nothing can truly prepare you for parenthood. It is, on one hand, a simultaneous demand of everything you’ve learned in life – patience, understanding, fear, doubt, trust, faith, sympathy, hope, frustration, joy, etc., and on the other hand, unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

Bringing a child into the world in this day and age can be terrifying. I’ve seen just how much the world has changed since I was young, and it’s easy to be fearful for the years to come. I wrote this song to encourage her, to caution her, and to let her know that I’m always close."

Demon Hunter – Raining Down Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“When the sun is shining in our own lives, it’s important to remember that it’s raining down upon someone else.

It can be difficult to truly see outside yourself – especially when everything seems to be coming up roses. When we suffer, we expect the world to stop and suffer with us… But when we’re basking in the glow of good fortune, we’re often blind to those whose lives are in turmoil. This song is a reminder, to myself as much as anyone else, to be mindful at all times of the difficulties others face.

I wrote the lyrics to this chorus while we were on tour in Europe in 2010. I’ve been anxious to use them ever since. Originally, the melody was much different and I intended on using them in a slower, more melancholy tune."

Demon Hunter – The End Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“I wrote this song during the first few months of parenthood – learning how to keep a new human alive, stressing over every tiny thing, not being able to sleep out of fear that she’d stop breathing. I’d get up several times a night just to stare at her chest to make sure her lungs were pumping. I needed that consolation at least half a dozen times before I could sleep at all. It’s truly unreal the amount of concern a child introduces into your life. Ironically, each difficult step seems like nothing in hindsight.

In compiling the lyrics for the album artwork, I noticed that sleep is a common theme throughout this record. I can’t help but think it’s because my sleep schedule as a first-time father was turned upside down."

Demon Hunter – One Less Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“There are many ‘types’ of Christians and truthfully I don’t find myself aligning with a great deal of them. For the most part, I consider myself to have a fairly rigid worldview – I tend to see a lot of issues as black or white. This is something many would consider old-fashioned compared to a typical, modern-day Christian. But when I consider the mentality of the fundamentalist, I find even less in common. I consider legalistic Christianity just as flawed as many non-believers would and I’ve purposefully built upon that divide for years through Demon Hunter. I understand we share some common views, but I refuse to be guilty by association.

At the end of the day, I’m content to stand on unpopular beliefs, but I will not be remembered as a person who locked himself away from the world in a delusional, judgmental bubble."

Demon Hunter – Patience Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“The melody for Patience came to me early one morning while driving. Nearly every vocal melody or guitar riff on any DH record was conceived while alone in my truck. I’ve realized it’s the only time that I’m able to sit, focus, and contemplate for long periods of time without distraction.

I’ve always considered myself to be a patient individual. But in recent years I regularly find myself at the very edge of my breaking point. There are many times that my patience has kept me from doing or saying something regrettable and I consider that a virtue. But there are also moments that I feel I’ve been too patient. I tend to let things roll off my back. This can be freeing, but it has its own consequences. These days, I’m trying to react in a more communicative manner. I can hone my patience when need be, but I’m more conscious that I have a choice."

Demon Hunter – Slight The Odds Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“I’ve written songs about friends losing their faith before. As it continues to be an unfortunate reality in my life, it remains a relevant subject. In this song I attempt a more sympathetic approach, understanding that many seasons in life can seem unforgiving.

Slight, in a sense, means to reject. As I see it, in terms of keeping my own faith, the odds are stacked against me. But I would rather die with my faith intact than live to see it dwindle away.

We knew that we wanted to add a string section to one of the songs on the record, but didn’t know which song until the very end. Slight the Odds became the clear choice with its cinematic-inspired opening riff. As we began to formulate a final track listing, it became all the more fitting that, as the closing track (to the standard album), we would end on an epic note."

Demon Hunter – Savage Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“This song is about judging a book by its cover – or more specifically, judging a person based on appearance. It seems to me that for every grizzled criminal with a tattooed face, there’s a buttoned-up, seemingly ‘sane’ individual capable of the same heinous act. As a matter of fact, in my experience, the most egregious behavior I’ve witnessed has been from someone that would be considered very ‘safe’ looking. That’s where the concept for this song was born – the idea that come extremely villainous people are hiding in plain sight.”

Demon Hunter – A Fear I Used To Know Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“I have obsessed about the perceived legitimacy of Demon Hunter since day one. There were times when playing live shows seemed like a necessity to validate us as a ‘real thing’. I’ve lived with a sense of fear that we might not be seen in the same light as other, more active bands. As I get older and priorities begin to shift dramatically, I can feel these fears dissipate.

There will always be a part of me that is concerned with the band’s perception in this regard, but it’s no longer a focus. Not only have I found a sense of comfort in whatever the future holds for Demon Hunter, but when I look back, I’m amazed and humbled by what an incredible journey it’s been.

This was the first song I wrote for Outlive."

Demon Hunter – Half As Dead Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“I wrote these lyrics with the intention to pitch them to another band. Even though the subject matter is perfect, truthfully I didn’t think they would be the right fit for DH. I came back to them while I was writing demos for this record and found that I loved how they sounded in this song.

I’ve always been very interested in funerals, burials, and other rituals revolving around death. I’d love to say that my faith shields me from a fear of death, but that would be a lie. I’m terrified of death. I’ve come to believe that my obsession with death, and my incessant writing of death-centered lyrics, are attempts to cope with the reality of its impending nature. I do believe death is merely a gateway into the next life, but that doesn’t stop me from hoping for a long and fruitful life."

Demon Hunter – Died In My Sleep Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
Ryan Clark:
“I believe we, being followers of Christ, have done a fairly abysmal job of witnessing in recent years. Our voice is anything but unified and our methods often inspire more laughter than contemplation. We’ve become fluent in putting our collective foot in our mouth when we dare to say anything at all.

Miraculously, and despite all this, we still see people turning to Christ. Though it may not happen as often as we would hope, the fact that it does happen is such dark times is a testament to the power of God himself – His ability to transcend that divide caused by the rest of us. When I hear these stories, sometimes it’s hard to believe. The older I get, the more it seems everyone has made up their mind with regards to faith."

Demon Hunter – Jesus Wept Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
“I consider this song a reminder to myself. I get so wrapped up in the repetition of daily life, I often forget the cost of it all; the price that was paid so I could live abundantly in God’s grace and mercy. I think I’ve come to expect a certain amount of balance in life – seldom looking back to see how it all lined up.

Truthfully, my modus operandi most days is to be my own God – to serve myself before all others. I’m not proud of that fact, but I’m also not delusional about it. Ironically, the behaviors I so vehemently stand against are things I also see in myself. As incongruent as that makes me, I think it does allow me to write about many issues with a certain amount of proficiency. In many cases I’m blaming myself just as much as anyone else"

Demon Hunter – Trying Times Lyrics 6 years ago
Behind the Song:
“Trying times started off as the beginning of Jesus Wept. It was much shorter and featured only the four opening lines. As we started tracking the record, it became clear that it would make a great intro on its own. We decided to lengthen it by adding the middle verse section, but still tie it seamlessly to Jesus Wept.

The beauty of recorded music is that it preserves a moment in time. It can be an unbreakable monument for future generations; a time capsule that no one can cover up or destroy. The more meaning and soul you put into it, the more life it will have. This song encapsulates the stand we take today and the hope that whatever truths we uncover will resonate beyond our years."
