Bruce Hornsby – Swan Song Lyrics 7 years ago
Great song by one of the most criminally underrated artists out there. The song captures perfectly how I hope I feel at the end of all of my life milestones. When my career is over. When I can no longer live on my own. When I can no longer walk on my own. When I finally pass from this earth. I hope that I can honestly say the words to this song. It may not be a fond farewell, it may not be a farewell that I want, but at the end of the day, few regrets, no sorrow, no axe to grind, just a sweet swan song and it's over. Beautiful.

The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight Lyrics 7 years ago
Incredibly underrated song. Powerfully emotional and beautifully laid out. And something a lot of guys can relate to, at one point or another in their lives.

I love how it has no chorus. It's just a narrative about a normal night out at the bar, when in walks the ex, and the night's going better, and all the good feelings of love and sexuality and the beauty of being together come rushing back, and then snap, she leaves with her new guy, and makes an intentional scene so that you know she won the heartbreak warfare game, and now you realize holy shit, I'm drunk, I'm an emotional mess, and this night has gone quite awry. The way the instruments build with each verse is amazing. One more gets added in with each verse, adding a depth to the emotion of the song that's hard to describe. By the end, it's a crescendo of noise, emotion, and mess. I can clearly feel the heartbreak of the lead singer each time I hear it. One of the few songs that seriously brings this middle-aged guy to tears.

Great song.

Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out Lyrics 8 years ago
Deep yet simple song about the loss of carefree innocent days of youth and the transition to the stresses and complexities of being an adult in our modern world. I heard this song on the way in to work this morning and the repeated lyric "Wake up, you need to make money" was practically taunting me. That's when you know someone has written a song that's pretty real.

Barenaked Ladies – The Old Apartment Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Sylvied:10674] - this is exactly it. It's a nostalgic longing for a simpler time in one's life. In that time, in spite of all of the downsides of the crappy apartment, it was home, and the singer was young and full of passion, and life was full of possibility and undetermined outcomes. It's a recognition that as much as you may want to, you can never actually go back to that life, or that apartment - at least not without breaking in.

Andrew W.K. – Victory Strikes Again Lyrics 8 years ago
Such an awesome song. I don't know how to say how awesome Andrew WK's music, attitude, and energy are other than this ...

If I die someday doing some heroic deed, when I'm carted up to Heaven, I want this song to be blaring.

Imagine Dragons – I Bet My Life Lyrics 9 years ago
I know Dan Reynolds specifically says the song is about his at times strained relationship with his parents, but to me this song can be applied much more broadly than that. I see the Parable of the Prodigal Son is this song pretty clearly (which I suppose parallels Reynolds's own relationship with his parents to a degree).

"I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I know I let you down, didn't I
So many sleepless nights where you were waiting up on me
But I'm just a slave unto the night

Now remember when I told you that's the last you'll see of me
Remember when I broke you down to tears
I know I took the path that you would never want for me
I gave you hell through all the years"

This verse parallels the Prodigal Son asking his father for his share of the inheritance before the father has passed (a big cultural no-no at the time) and then going off into a faraway land to squander it on riotous living.

"I've been around the world and never in my wildest dreams
Would I come running home to you
I've told a million lies but now I tell a single truth
There's you in everything I do"

This verse captures the conflict that the Prodigal Son must feel on some level before returning to the father. It's humiliating, but yet his situation has become desperate enough that he has no choice. And in that difficult return, he comes to the realization that the father is always in him.

The chorus is sung in a very different voice, and to me that means that it's a response from the father. The father loves the son so much that he will bet his very life on him. He's all in. Lines up perfectly with the overall Biblical narrative.

I didn't care for the song the first time I heard it but it's growing on me. Not as good as the best few songs from Night Visions but still a good song.

Santana – Winning Lyrics 15 years ago
Amazed there aren't more comments on this one. Beautiful song about having bad things happen to you but yet overcoming it all with a sense of well-being and a sense that you are in some way blessed just to be alive. Has spiritual / Christian overtones even. Love this tune.

Perfect words to someone who is down on his/her luck.

Andrew W.K. – She Is Beautiful Lyrics 15 years ago
jfd4 nailed it with the first post. The song, from Andrew WK himself, is about taking a chance. Just in general. Don't be paralyzed by your own fear. Because if you are, you may find yourself in the same situation Andrew did, wondering what if I had been courageous enough. Nothing to lose except the chance to live more. Isn't that the truth?

Andrew W.K. – Party Hard Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is basically a shot of adrenaline, nothing more, nothing less, as others have pointed out. Just a good song to put on and get a party going. Which is pretty much what it's all about.

I agree, amazing song. It's impossible to hear this song and not be inspired.

Cross Canadian Ragweed – Long Way Home Lyrics 15 years ago
Pretty clearly about a small-town west Texas kid who is suddenly called from his home to fight in Vietnam, and the effects that has had on him. He can't ever really go back to being the innocent kid from West Texas any more. It's a long way home.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about the general rise to power and eventual fall from grace that virtually all kingdoms and all rulers face, including God and the Kingdom of Heaven, at least insofar as how mankind treats them. Some of the specifics point to the song being perhaps about the French Revolution and King Louis XVI, and there's some validity to that. I think it also references God and the way we as human beings have thrown Him out.

Pretty straight-forward song about wanting to go back to paradise and leave all the daily grind behind. That's pretty much what Jimmy B is all about.

Jimmy Buffett – The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful Lyrics 15 years ago
I love Jimmy's explanation from the Parrothead Handbook about where this song came from. The sont title was written on the wall of the bathroom in some bar in the Caribbean. Classic Jimmy B song.

Jimmy Buffett – One Particular Harbour Lyrics 15 years ago
Of all of Jimmy Buffet's great songs, this is the obscure song that touches me the most. It's about that place where you are truly home.

"But there's this one particular harbour
So far but yet so near
Where I see the days as they fade away
And finally disappear"

It's that place that forever calls out to you. The place (the harbor) can be a physical place, a person, a family, or even a spiritual place. Beautiful song.

Bruce Springsteen – Badlands Lyrics 15 years ago
Other comments have already summarized it better than I could. What other artist can write a few paragraphs of lyrics that make some thing of Kant, others think of Paul's letter to the Corinthians, and yet the song still rocks.

The Samples – Indiana Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song. To me, it's just about being on the road in a random place, seeing random things, and wondering what's out there, why it's out there, and then realizing that it's probably not really random, there is probably a reason why it's there. The Samples have made their living on the road. I interpret this song to be an ode by Sean to life on the road and the wonder that it has brought him.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Southern Cross Lyrics 15 years ago
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, located in Tahiti. The Marquesas are another small south Pacific island, also in French Polynesia. All of this is located about a thousand miles or so east of New Zealand, which is where Avalon is located. The Southern Cross is a set of four stars in the southern sky, which serve a similar function as the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere.

When the writer sees the Southern Cross for the first time, it's like this piece of God's beauty gives him some reorientation, and some new inspiration to keep moving on. There may even be some religious significance there - coming to the cross. "Spirits are using me, larger voices calling."

The Alan Parsons Project – Days Are Numbers (The Traveller) Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't believe no one has commented on this song yet. This song has a lot to say to us today ...

"The traveller is always leaving town
He never has the time to turn around
And if the road he's taken isn't leading anywhere
He seems to be completely unaware" - we endlessly pursue career advancement, wealth, power, fame, completely unaware that following this road will not get us anywhere

"The traveller is always leaving home
The only kind of life he's ever known
When every moment seems to be
A race against the time
There's always one more mountain left to climb" - it's never enough for us. Part of the human condition is that we're never satisfied

"The traveller awaits the morning tide
He doesn't know what's on the other side
But something deep inside of him
Keeps telling him to go
He hasn't found a reason to say no" - a reference perhaps to the days of the European explorers and conquistadors, but aren't we still of the same mindset today?

Beautiful song. Very deep.

What a beautiful song. I have a 5-year-old daughter who is the most adorable and precious thing in the world to me. And every time I hear this song, I think of her and start to cry out loud. Because I know that she won't be this way for long. Darius, what you say is so, so true.

Bruce Springsteen – Tunnel Of Love Lyrics 15 years ago
Blue Monkey nails it.

This is a brilliant song that uses an old amusement park ride as a metaphor for the challenges and struggles of modern day marriage.

The only one not mentioned yet that I've seen is the reference to the crazy mirror. The mirror room on this ride had a bunch of large, curvy mirrors that simultaneously magnified and distorted your image and the image of anyone or anything else in the mirror. Isn't marriage the same way? Doesn't it reveal every odd quirk, every imperfection, every failure, every human weakness, in the worst possible light? Aren't these things put under such a microscope that you wonder how anyone makes it through? That's the "crazy mirror showing us both in 5-D".

The Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is definitely an appeal to all of us who have made Christmas into this commercial carnival to step back and remember what it is really all about. "I don't need boxes wrapped in strings, designer love and empty things" is perhaps the most beautiful lyric I've heard about my own feelings about Christmas and what we as Americans have let it become. Christmas is about a celebration of life, a celebration of renewal, a celebration of the fact that He is born. "Take these words and sing out loud, 'cause everyone is forgiven now." That's the message of Christmas.

Live – Wings Lyrics 15 years ago
Beautiful song. Without even trying, it sums up the life of a person of faith (especially a Christian). Your faith is a burden, and so is everything in this world that beats you down. But it's that burden that you embrace that will ultimately be the wings that carry you home. You just have to open your eyes and your heart to be able to take the long view and see it that way.

Bruce Springsteen – The Rising Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is clearly a reference to the firefighters who went into the towers on 9/11, but it's a brilliant song in that it could just as easily be referencing any person who is going through struggles in life.

"Can't see nothing in front of me, can't see nothing comin' up behind" - firefighters going into a building filled with thick smoke can barely see an inch in front of their face, there is obviously a TON of fear and faith involved in this - sort of like life, you can't always see what's coming up on you and you don't always have time to reflect and get good perspective on where you've been and what you've done either

"Make my way through this darkness, can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me" - firefighters are chained together so that they can follow one another in and out of the building with no sight but the chain is heavy and binding to duty - sort of like in life, whatever your duty may be (maybe your job, maybe your family responsbilities, maybe caring for a loved one, maybe just the weight of your own faith), can seem to bind you and keep you from other things

"Lost track of how far I've gone, how far I've gone, how high I've climbed" - again, no perspective on anything, just going and going without a rest

"On my back's a 60 pound stone, on my shoulder half mile of line" - 60 pound stone is a clear reference to the Oxygen tank that these firefighters wore on their back - and it's interesting because the very thing that gives the firefighters life in this awful circumstance is also a huge burden to carry - just like being a Christian - the blood of Jesus is the very thing that gives you life, but carrying that cross can be a significant burden as well.

Beautiful song.

Collective Soul – Needs Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is written in the voice of a person of deep Christian faith who comes to that point, as all spiritual persons do (including Christians), where he asks himself if he is living his life in accordance with God's plan - "am I a poison, am I a thorn in the side" or "am I a picture perfect subject". He also realizes that he has been selfish with his life and focused on his needs for God's needs and the world's needs - "in this time of substitute, it's my needs I've answered to, all the while" followed by a spine-tingling violin riff. It's like that glass of cold water that hits you in the face when you are suddenly confronted with your own self-centered ways. Then by the end of the song, he cries out "you're all I need". He's definitely talking directly to God at that point.

Beautiful song.

Lifehouse – Everything Lyrics 15 years ago
I hate to tell you all this, but this song ain't about no girl. This is the voice of a guy who is in the midst of something very troubling, and he is crying out to God. In his own moving prayer said aloud, he figures out that all he wants is to know God, and once he knows God, "you tell me, how could it be, any better than this?" Joy and peace fill his soul in that moment when he truly is in communion with God. Beautiful song.

Can't believe no one has commented on this beautiful song yet. Reminds me of a beautiful summer evening which just inspires you to get out and explore God's world. "I'm not going home, the same way I came, but I'll see you tomorrow, on another brand new day." As if to say, I just need to go explore and unwind a bit, and tomorrow, I'll hit the ground running as a brand new man.

Love The Samples and I love this song.

Needtobreathe – Washed by the Water Lyrics 15 years ago
Just a hunch, but I think the "father" that he's talking about in the first paragraph is God. I agree, the Church is his "wife". God comes to the world in the form of Jesus, Jesus chooses to make Himself a sacrifice for all of mankind. Many people accuse Jesus of making the wrong choice, they say He should have fought them in this world. But as the song says, "Those people have long since gone, My father never failed."

Beautiful song.
