The Smiths – The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Lyrics 1 year ago
@[BillyBudd:45321] "I love the music of this song, and much of the lyrics, but hard to listen to a song that seems to deals with such an awful issue." I second this. Disgusting.

@[Jakesp:45319] man that's fd up. I did not want to know this interpretation of the song at all ????. Although some lines always did sound off 'I once had a child and it saved my life' never sounded sexual to me but that's probably due to english being my second language. I just thought he meant he had lost a child once (I do not know anything about Morrisey personally, I like to avoid getting to know too much about the artists I listen to).

Bloc Party – Talons Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about someone being kind of promiscuous and the possible consequences of that behaviour.

"A new disease came in the post for me today"

An obvious reference to getting an STD, probably HIV/AIDS ("a new disease" by medical standards since it was in the late 80s/early 90s that it was beginning to be identified for what it is).

"When it comes it feels like a kiss"... because it is. A "kiss" being a reference to a sexual encounter and not just a "kiss". You may not know you've been infected for months, maybe even years. Right after the hookup it was just that: a hookup. You may not even know from whom you got it from.

"You saddened my friends and claimed all my lovers" this verse takes on a deeper meaning when you take into account that Kele is gay and HIV has disproportionally affected gay people around the globe. The movie The Normal Heart dramatizes how the situation was like for gay people infected with HIV in the mid-80s. Back then no one even know what "HIV" was. Sad stuff.

I didn't think much of this song after listening to the original version for years (not paying attention to the lyrics...) but I'm just listening to the XXXChange remix and it is awesome. Good remixes sometimes make you reconsider the original song and now I can say that it is great :)

Switchfoot – Souvenirs Lyrics 8 years ago
To me it's about a breakup or maybe even a divorce. He is reminiscing about the beginning of their love and how they were so young that they didn't have a clue of how life and reality was going to get in the way of everything but they still have the memories of the good times.

Editors – The Phone Book Lyrics 8 years ago
To me this song is about seeing a loved one (like your parents, as the line "I'm an apple you're the tree, I won't fall when you're shook") grow old and being there for them when they get sick.

Almost self explanatory, the first verse says that he is watching over the bedridden person, maybe at the hospital after a health scare.

In the second verse he is kind of apologising ("I'm not an angel, I never mean to make you cry"). Maybe he wasn't always the best person he could be when growing up but the person now sick was always there for him regardless of how unreasonable he was ("jumping through my hoops with dissension in the troops") with "a smile and a sigh".

The third verse, at first puzzling he is essentially asking the person to say anything at all to him. It could be from the heart or "from the phone book", which could be anything really, as long as something is said he would feel better since it means the person is getting better.

In the chorus he notices ("what's that over your shoulder?") that his loved one is coming to the realization that he is older now, maybe too old ("fear of getting older") and is afraid of the end being near but he wants the person to "stay with" him.

Editors – Honesty Lyrics 8 years ago
The song is about how "honesty" can be used to say things not specifically about the person you're with but that essentially do communicate your negative feelings towards him or her in a veiled fashion. "Don't you want me to stay? Make a rocking horse getaway" he is given signals that the partner doesn't want to be in a relationship anymore but he isn't leaving. "Collide into me, I could do with a fight" he obviously wants a direct confrontation (maybe to address the problems) that is being avoided by the partner (that is obviously done with him) so he has to ask if "does the honesty deceive?", is "honesty" (e.g. the negative feelings about other seemingly unrelated things) being used to signal something else?

The chorus is about how the aforementioned "honesty" is used by the partner in a different setting, a party. The partner probably doesn't want to be there or at least not with the person she's with and is being "honest" about everyone and everything so he implores "take it out on me" and not on everyone else, "cause all the honesty shut this place down". The honesty is making everyone else feel bad/weird thus "shutting the place down".

"The broken hearts of my neighborhood" alludes to how everyone around them has had their feelings hurt because of the "honesty" being used this way and how the couple is now being shut out of other social engagements ("with the boarded up windows and the closing sales") until they solve their problems or break up.

I would really like to know what the last verse means:

"You always thought she had a chance and it was somewhere hidden
Now you’ve come to the conclusion that she never did
Not a chance, that is"

Anyone care to lighten me up?

Blink-182 – Fuck a Dog Lyrics 9 years ago
@[Castor:1875] indeed lol.

This song is so ridiculously funny that, back then, me and my friends adopted it as kind of our anthem. We would play it and then, solemnly, stand at attention with the right hand over the heart while we sang it. Good times lol.

My theory for this song (along with When You Fucked Grandpa) is that blink-182 was so popular back then that they decided to see how much shit they could get away with on a record and still have a fanbase.

I have problems with this line. I think about a gay boy that likes the father of the church it frequents and wants that father to "molest" him. Kind of justifying the catholic church child molestation problem. Ugly stuff. I doubt that was the intention of the line but that's how I look at it.

Bloc Party – Biko Lyrics 11 years ago
I really like your explanation. I already understood its meaning but your interpretation made the whole song much more graphic so thank you. As you said, cancer is very explicitly stated on the song but I don't think this is bad: is a song about a cancer stricken person and not trying to be one of those songs that "depend on someone's interpretation" (most of them). There's a place for songs like this.

Ryan Adams – Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby) Lyrics 11 years ago
Christianity really? This song is about someone close to Ryan that's dying or about to die but he doesn't want Jesus to "take" her away from him.

"Jesus, don't touch my baby
She's all that I got"

Jesus touch is like a metaphor for dying in this song.

System of a Down – Mr. Jack Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this is about a couple of people (maybe black) that were in a car returning home after having a fun night were they may have used marijuana. The cop that stopped them noted this so the line "The Your prospect of living gone, You ran the light at dawn" is speaking about how this person will probably have some kind of criminal record (wish will really diminish they kind of job he will be able to have) just because he smoked pot or used some other inoffensive drug.

The "You must now face authority, You're nothing like me" line speaks to how the policeman is feeling. He is the personification of authority and now you must feel it, unlike him who can do anything he pleases and never face a consequence.

"Being a man made me coarse
When I wanted to be delicate"

Judging by that line I thought that this song was about a gay guy that just didn't feel he could go on with his life ("I called up Eugene, Told him I was _drowning_"). But moushi down there said that kele explained the lyrics on an interview and it's not about a gay guy.

The Devil Wears Prada – Reptar, King Of The Ozone Lyrics 14 years ago
I think is about torture.

"Don't attempt to justify what we know is wrong."
Is referring to the people that try to justify as a matter of national security.

"Tendons are torn and screams are released into a poisoned, mathematic atmosphere."
Describing the act of torture itself. "mathematic atmosphere" is referring to how calculated the process is.

"We're composing our funeral songs, note by note."
Is referring to our sad state of affairs in general. Torture is just the peak of the iceberg.

I know that to some it may sound "too political" for a christian band but it isn't if you are just against the act of torture itself and what it says about our ethics and morals in general. Torture is not justifiable in the eyes of god must be the band's point.

The Devil Wears Prada – Texas Is South Lyrics 15 years ago
Why would a person with christian values say that an atheist can't listen to TDWP? Why? That's like saying that the non-believers can't go to church. The whole point of god sending his only son down here was to help the sinners. I'm not a christian myself but to read someone write that shows you how elitist people can be to the point of not even being true to their own (supposedly) faith.

That being said I have to say that I fail to see religion in most of their lyrics (except those in which they name christ) they mean something different and more generic to me. I'm not saying that they are not religious, they are, is just that they aren't to me.

Still Remains – The Worst Is Yet to Come Lyrics 15 years ago
Is true that they're a christian band but christ isn't present at all in this song.

To me this song is about getting old. The whole song is describing how it is to get old. "These words have slipped again." Words maybe without any meaning at all, signal that he (the subject in the song) is senile or something. "This mud is too thick to see through." Is a metaphor to getting blind. "The wounds won't heal." Again, signal that he is old. "So, I'm fearing... The worse is yet to come." After you are old, things don't get any easier health-wise.

My 0.002 cents.

Seems I'm not an early metallica fan maybe I have to take out the "heavy metal gods metallica" out of your comment. The album is hard rock that's for sure but still there are some really good tracks.

The Killers – A Dustland Fairytale Lyrics 15 years ago
@eloquence: I'm starting to think that is better to not read other people's song "meanings", sometimes they're the true meaning of the song but not the one you had, which of course feels better. I personally don't like much when song writers write song about themselves, I mean, it's good and all but it's better when it isn't implied.
