Did anybody read D.H. Lawrence's "Sons and Lovers"? The scene when Paul Morel breaks off his relationship with Miriam and is shocked when she admits that, well, "she knew that this would happen" all the way? And in the end they decide to write each other (after all)?
I'm not saying that this was the inspiration for this song. It's just funny how all breakups are similar in the end... |

no - bland it is. i read that in this song he's addressing his fellow band members that kept frowning at his lyrics, asking "what's that supposed to be about?" all the time. i guess it's not just about that - it's also about memories, about how time alters your memory of something or someone and when you try to write it down it's like chasing ghosts - whenever you try to grab it your hands just slide right through it. so, the only thing you can get are little pieces of what you remember and while you try to put them together you get a bit lost and in the end it makes sense to you but to no one else anymore. |

bare ankles were something exciting a 100 years ago just because a lady would never show them in public, it was as decent as showing your nipples to everybody is today. so, nobody gets especially turned on by a bare ankle anymore, it's sort of outdated - except for that one lady he talks about, with her everything is still exciting, even a simple bare ankle. |

@Pelayo hihihihi...you're joking, right? c'mon, it's about sex DEFINITELY, how sometimes you just want someone because you think it will make you feel less lonely, and you wake up in the morning and just go "oh, i really didn't need this" and paradoxaly you feel even lonelier. He probably thought a bit about this feeling of utter disgust with yourself that overcomes you after a "useless fumble"...or, well, how you sometimes have wishes that you can't really handle when they come true.
but there's this other thing that bothers me in this song,
"Oh but the pinkness near your iris,
Reveals that you've been crying,
But I don't know what my crime is"
I think that the girl is crying because she expected more than a one night stand from him. He didn't lie to her about his intentions, she said yes, but when she realized in the morning that that's REALLY all she will get, she was disapointed. So, he doesn't know what he's done wrong, and he didn't do anything wrong really, except, in my opinion, he could have foreseen that this will happen. So, this whole "i don't know what my crime is sounds like a lame "oh, i REALLY didn't see that coming" excuse, where he maybe just didn't want to think about the possible ending before the fun started |

I think this whole hypothetical/theoretical/dialectical rhyming is rather tongue-in-cheek, i think he's making a little fun of himself, you know how people always perceive/label him as bookwormish, literate and so on...i think he just thought it'll be funny to fill out the cliche |
