Nick Drake – Which Will Lyrics 14 years ago
i'm with the unrequited love theory, don't really see how it could be about shyness. it's really cool how he sings so quiet but if you listen closely/use your imagination you can hear the desperation.

Nick Drake – Road Lyrics 14 years ago
i agree with what everyone else said, but i'd like to add that the first two lines are brilliant because they work as metapher and imagery at the same time. it's like when you hear the first line you think of someone who is really cheery but maybe a little superficial and at first you think the second line is the opposite, someone who is really depressed, but then you're hit with that image of the clear moon and it's like exhilarating and it kind of illustrates how things can be more intense and vivid, more beautiful, when you aren't in denial, but are open to all aspects of experience, even those that seem difficult or uncomfortable.

Meat Puppets – Oh, Me Lyrics 15 years ago
"Complacency, narcissism, self-absorption.
The true beauty is that this song, for all its irony, really does have a touch of the infinite."

well put, snibble.

derrick says it was a concept song about self indulgence so the lyrics are about that and that's also why they play it really slowly and self-indulgently.

i guess it's kind of making fun of the whole prog or psychedelic jamming thing, which the meat puppets were way into.

Meat Puppets – Paradise Lyrics 15 years ago
the lyrics seem pretty self expanatory and the ecstatic guitar solos go along with the upbeat lyrical content. huevos might be more conventional than the meat puppets' earlier albums, but i think it has a great atmosphere and some of the most beautiful moments of their career.

btw, ivory whales high on cornbread is pretty much the coolest lyric ever. curt kirkwood seems to have some sort of obsession with sea mammals, i mean think about it...seal whales, ivory whales, dolphin field...

Meat Puppets – Station Lyrics 15 years ago
life is a moment that goes by really fast, like a station you're about to leave. When you think of it that way, your reality gets kind of stirred up and things you thought were important i.e. fears, hopes, your name don't seem as important, nothing makes sense, hence liquid bread and rubber ice.

Third Eye Blind – Good for You Lyrics 16 years ago
I didn't think of it being about a stalker, but that kind of makes sense. I always thought it was about a priest who is a pedophile and is molesting an altar boy. "Hey child please stay awhile my smile will not mislead you" means don't be scared away by the fact that I'm smiling like a creeper. "I've been alone my faith turned to stone" and "I've been without, I go wild with doubt" is self-explanatory.
At first the priest restrains himself ("still I let you be, I feel you next to me") but eventually he goes crazy ("I'm taken in your undertow" etc.) and molests the altar boy ("I can't stop grabbing at you"). He says, "All I wanna do is be there for the things that you're going through. Is it good for you?" because his job is to guide the little boy and teach him about God and stuff and he probably has good intentions, he's just a little bit messed up in the head.

The Velvet Underground – Black Angel's Death Song Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it has something to do with suicide, I guess because of "Choose to go" and the song title. Black angel makes it sound like death is bad but it can also save you. I like the line "Choose a side to be on" for some reason, I don't know why, it's just great, and the whole rest of the song is too.

The Velvet Underground – Sunday Morning Lyrics 16 years ago
I doubt it's a drug reference, it's definitely not nostalgic, and it isn't tranquil, it's more reflective. When nothing is happening and all of a sudden you're struck by the weight of your whole situation in life and you're a little overwhelmed. Zepkid nailed the meaning, IMO. It sounds to me like the first line is "Sunday morning brings the dawn in," but I'm probably wrong.

The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics 16 years ago
The vicious cycle of addiction and feeling empty and helpless. Plus wanting to die. I wouldn't say I live for his voice, but it is pretty amazing. It is so in your face, you get the feeling that he is really trying to connect with the listener.

submissions
Television – Venus de Milo Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it is about a feeling of groundlessness. I would think it was about drugs if it didn't say, "It's all like some new kind of drug." It is about someone who is tripping, but it's a good trip. I think they say "Huh?" like they're really surprised he didn't feel low, because a lot of people do, when they're confused or have nothing to hold onto. Oh, sweet nothing.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Some Candy Talking Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know exactly what it's about, but it is really sad in a good way. The Jesus and Mary Chain sometimes reminds me of country music, especially this song. I just mean the way it sounds, not the lyrics.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics 16 years ago
It's kind of like when you don't want to eat something because it grosses you out it helps if you pretend it's something else that you like. Maybe that's why he keeps repeating "just like honey" at the end, to psych himself up or something.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Happy When It Rains Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the last two people before me got the meaning right. This song kinda reminds me of that song on the tire commercial that goes, "Raindrops keep falling on my head, but that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red."

Nirvana – Here She Comes Now (Velvet Underground cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, White Light/White Heat is completely insane. I like both versions but they are completely different. Nirvana really made the song rock and Kurt is good at screaming.

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about two ways love tears people apart
1) It doesn't last and people drift apart (I got that from the lyrics)
2) When you fall in love with someone else it destroys the relationship you were already in (I got that from knowing what happened with Ian Curtis)
This sucks because love could be a great but people have all these expectations like relationships can't change, they have to stay the same as they were at the beginning, you have to love some people more than others, etc. It's love division. I think this song is really sad because for people who aren't religious a lot of them still believe in love, however vague that is, just look at all the popular songs, most of the happy ones are love songs. Regarding Joy divider's theory, some of it does sound like they don't want to have sex, but that's probably symptomatic of the other issues they're having, which are the main focus of the song, in my opinion. Oh yeah and I agree with loveisadisaster, who said "this song basically says everything about love. it never dies, yet it somehow does."

Joy Division – Incubation Lyrics 16 years ago
One meaning of incubation is the stage of the creative process when you completely give up on solving a problem and then if you go back to it later you might forget the way you were trying to solve it before that wasn't working and look at it a different way and get an insight on how to solve the problem.

Brian Eno – Spider and I Lyrics 16 years ago
I wouldn't have thought of terrible sadness, but I think that describes it perfectly. This song is how I'd feel if I was frozen inside a block of ice or if I turned into a rock, like in Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. People sometimes sleep in the mornings when they're depressed because they don't want to get up. The part about the ship is escapism.

Brian Eno – Golden Hours Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about coming to a stop or just slowing down a lot. Like when you've been rushing around for a long time and all of a sudden you become aware of yourself again. It really reminds me of Sunday Morning by the Velvet Underground for some reason I probably shouldn't compare songs because people might not have heard it but I think it has a lot of the same ideas and feelings. "Never a silence, always a face at the door" is like "Watch out, the world's behind you, there's always someone around you who will call....it's nothing at all."

Love Spit Love – St. Mary's Gate Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, I'm not sure what it means but I just wanna say "Who's got what God is on" is pretty much one of the coolest one-liners in rock that I've heard. I think the song is partly about people who are kind of self-centered and just do whatever they feel like all the time. The lines, "do like we all do/see what you want to/lay your head down/sweet smile," "nail the door shut," and "do like we all do/say what you want to/move your mouth/speak soft lies" makes it sound like everyone is living in their pleasant little fantasy world where ignorance is bliss. That also fits in with "Who's got what God is on?" The answer is everyone because we are all high on arrogance and think we can do whatever we want and nothing can touch us. The part at the end that says, "We fall all the way, all the way..." could mean that eventually our blindness and carelessness is going to catch up with us and we will have some kind of rude awakening. It's like in Buddhism they say people in the God realms are subject to "change and falling." Life is great now but it can't last forever and pretty soon your karma is gonna catch up to you. Something like that.

Love Spit Love – Seventeen Lyrics 16 years ago
I think seventeen refers to age, as in being seventeen years old. A lot of people at that age think they're very seasoned and they already know everything, hence the lines, "i can't believe/it's been so long/can't believe/i can't see/seventeen/can't be wrong/seventeen/fall on me." Some lines convey the revolutionary attitude teenagers sometimes have (or had), like "wake up demonstrations
said silence is the wrong word," "i want to watch the world from the edge of my seat when it burns," "i want to walk the outside/they're burning down the houses," and "gonna make a big scene/here comes/
faith comes/banging on a tin drum." Besides those parts, I don't know.

Love Spit Love – Jigsaw Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's mostly about reification and conceptualization (not sure what those words mean, but one of them might be right) and the confusion they cause. A lot of the song is describing someone trying to represent things in abstract ways through language, signs, art, names, clock time, etc. and he's having some difficulty because it seems kind of senseless and pointless. He says, "It would be so easy to see if I could be there now, right now" because if experience was direct and there wasn't as much separation everything would be a lot clearer and more straightforward. Am I wrong? Probably.
