John Mayer – Born and Raised Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm in line with ra1234. The song is about coming to terms with growing up, and the consequences of all that.

Specifically to John, but more generally to all the rest of us, it means that no matter who you are, there comes a point where you have to realize that you are an adult, and as scary as it is, or as much as you feel like you aren't ready for it, it's time to start acting like one and making decisions like one.

This means accepting yourself, flaws and all, jadedness in all its glory, ("I cheat the light to check my face. It's slightly harder than last year.") realizing that you've adjusted your goals and dreams as life has taken over ("I still go dreams, they're not the same. They don't fly as high as the used to.") and lost the person that you swore you would be or used to be, ("I saw my friend, he's in my head, and he said, "You don't remember me do you?").

All this can get overwhelming and seem to pile on if you let it. ("All at once it gets hard to take").

But as John usually does, he leaves on an upbeat tone... Sure, things aren't the way you planned. But nobody else's are, really. We can lean on our support systems, ("I call on both of my brothers") family and friends, and no matter what you think has gone wrong or right, you are where you are, and you "still got time" to make peace with how things are, to step up to the plate and be who you were always meant to be ("Show your face to the morning"), not who you THOUGHT you were meant to be.

John Mayer – Edge Of Desire Lyrics 13 years ago
John has said, on multiple occassions, in multiple shows I have been to or seen that this song is one about drunk dialing, or making a late night phone call (or receiving) to someone that it hasn't worked out with, or isn't working out with, or can't work out... but making the call anyway. (Don't say a word, just come over.) Because, for that night, or just a few moments, that is the most improtant thing in the world. (Silently screaming, "I have to have you now.")

Maybe you're just going in circles with this person and getting no where, (a great figure 8) or you want to have another go at the whole "forever" thing (a tiny infinity). Maybe you have convinced yourself, and your friends have convinced you that you shouldn't call or answer when they call, that you're better off without this person, but tonight you want them and that's reason enough to do it. (I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe.)

Matt Nathanson – Falling Apart Lyrics 13 years ago
Ever felt like you're better than what you've been showing another person, and you don't want them leaving without seeing what you CAN be?

Seems like that's what this song is about. More precisely, the moment you realize that you might lose something that could mean everything and you start FALLING APART. And the solution to that is letting go; of a past love, your own pride, control... Whatever it is that is keeping you from being the man (or woman) that person should have because they have let go and they do love you, in spite of all your shortcomings and misgivings.

Whiskeytown – Everything I Do Lyrics 13 years ago
Obviously a longing song... about wanting somebody back. But going deeper, it's about wanting someone that is special in a way that not a lot of people will notice or appreciate (she's got diamonds in her eyes that she likes to hide.) And somebody that loves life and makes life better for anyone she chooses to touch (What the day brings comes as no surprise.)

Lastly, it's a perfect description of someone that is searching for some kind of meaning in day-to-day life without the person they had come to associate with living, and the transparency of seeing that life gone from him (Don't ask me how I'm doing when everything I do says I miss you.)

John Mayer – Assassin Lyrics 14 years ago
JJ brings up a good point that I think most have missed.

I also think it's important to the song to note that it's only when he breaks his rules of operation(or engagement, if we stick with the assassin thread). His rule is to "You get in, You get done, And then you get gone." But when he finds himself still in her room whenever the sun is up (Enter the morning light, to find the day is burning the curtains) he knows that he's in trouble. He feels her still with him, thinks back to what has happened and what he's feeling and what that'll do to him later... and he has the urge to bolt. He doesn't want to stick around for that aftermath.

He had always been the one to do the killing (of feelings, of attachment) but he knew that if he stuck around she would be the one doing the killing this time.

Matt Nathanson – More Than This Lyrics 16 years ago
A break-up. And more precisely one specific fight that ends up being the break up. She is telling him that he isn't good enough for her(obviously). I think the line about being a "I know you, youre a sales man's son and you're pimping pretty junk" is very deep actually. She saying he's simple, not a rich man. But that he is a natural at making it appear that simple, normal things(junk) are beautiful even though they aren't. And that he even probably does it with problems and concerns in the relationship. He's a master at covering them up, making it seem like they will be fine or go away. But she won't fall for it anymore. His little quirks (my mouth full, mess. Smiling like I'm competition. Maybe I'm yours) are no longer cute to her.

And he is asking what he is supposed to do without her. She's all he wants. He has planned a future around her. He needs more than her just bailing on him for no reason other than her friends say she could do better. In fact, he gets a little righteous about it and pokes at her saying basically, "Fine. Dump me. I always found it pathetic that you were a sheep to your friends." (Go on then hitch me up... Cause I do love the glow you get when you're told word-for-word how to think for yourself.)

Matt Nathanson – Answering Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like everyone so far is really close to hitting the nail on the head. But I think he really is over her. Sure he wants to rub it in his ex's face... but that's because she was wrong about him. "So wrong for so long now."

In her message that he has kept on his machine, she told him "I'm gone if this is all there is. You'll never shine alone." As in, "You aren't good enough. You'll never find someone like me. And you can't make it without me." And now that he is over her, that message is humorous to him. It used to serve as motivation, now it serves as comic relief.

He found it VERY easy to get over her. He is kinda surprised at how easy it was. He found someone just as good looking, someone that is just as addicting(well almost), someone with beautiful eyes, someone with soft skin... someone great. And he is happy his ex set him free. Free from her harping and her 'better than you' attitdue. Free from her emotional baggage.("I wonder if you're still defending.")

On the whole, he is telling her "Hey look. I do just fine without you. You were wrong about me. But I bet YOU're still having problems."

Joe Purdy – You don't like me anyway Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty obvious here that he is chasing after a girl that doesn't want him and has been waiting for her to realize that he is the right guy for her. But finally he has given up trying to impress her and make er feel loved because it does him no good anyway.

Tristan Prettyman – Electric Lyrics 16 years ago
I think narrator9 is right... but the two guys are the same person. There is the man, himself. Flawed and knowing it. He hurts her, doesn't always treat her right, but she knows he loves her, and that she loves him. And then there is the other guy, the guy inside himself, the one he wished he could show her more often. He knows he needs to but finds it so hard.(I know because I have been that guy.)

ANd she is fighting with herself whether it is worth it to stay with him... hoping that that guycomes out eventually.

Hootie & the Blowfish – Hey Sister Pretty Lyrics 16 years ago
The song is speaking to the confusion and the mess that is a disfunctional relationship. The erretic behavior, the constant fighting and making up, knowing that everybody is waiting for it to fall apart. But the guy is staying in it because he probably doesn't know anything else, or at least anything bettter.

Matt Nathanson – Sad Songs Lyrics 16 years ago
Perfect song. It captures the great parts of falling; the smells, the physical parts, the giving yourself over to that person. And then it still holds true to the difficulty of getting over that person.

Sweet, but a tad vengeful, and a lot sad too.

John Mayer Trio – Try! Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is a more up to date, slightly more confident, bluesy version of "My Stupid Mouth." Constantly not knowing what to say, wishing he were cooler. "Dumbing his process down" so it all works.

Any shy, "un-pimp" guy can speak this song word for word.

John Mayer Trio – Another Kind Of Green Lyrics 16 years ago
This line bridge is great, and the words are actually:

So go and drift away from here
Adopt some new philosophy
THAT doesn't hold the two of us in MIND
Move into someone else's place
Stare into some other's eyes
But slowly only come to realize
That you didn't need another kind of green to know
I'm on the right side

So poetically and simply said... Go ahead, leave. tell yourself we weren't that great together, tell yourslef your new man is better. Start a new life. But eventually, you'll be lying in bed next to him, thinking about me... and then you'll know. We worked.

I usually find Bryan Adams amazingly cheesey, but this is one of the exceptions. When he hits a song, he hits a homerun... this is one of 'em.

Michael Bublé – Everything Lyrics 16 years ago
My two favorite lines:

"You're the line in the sand when I go too far."
I love it because I am that kind of guy that tests his limits. I push people's buttons, see what rules I can break, I pick and I prod. I love having a girl that can just give me that loook that lets me know I have stepped out of line, that she is disappointed. I don't like being told what to do, but I love knowing that there is someone that wants me to act right.

"And you play it coy but it's kinda cute"
I love the mystery of a girl... I like the not knowing.

Billy Ray Cyrus – Ready, Set, Don't Go Lyrics 16 years ago
CCT is right on... but I don't have a daughter, so it is real easy to turn the song into one about the person you love leaving you.

You knwo it's best for her to leave, but that it probably isn't nest for you. You try to be the stand-up guy and get in the way of her dreams, because you want her to be happy, you truly do. But everything inside you is screaming not to let her leave. But you put on a fake face, and you say what you "should" say, but it kills you.

Great job by BRC of making the song double-edged.

Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this song is about finally going after the crush you have watched for so long. Everytime you are about to make the move you talk yourself out of it, telling yourself "but it's not quite right." You try to be cool about it, watch them when you don't think they are loking "with the same old decent lazy eye fixed to rest on you.' It's a lazy eye because you don't wanna be obvious and stare, so you keep one eye on them all night.

Pat Green – Crazy Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about all the tiny, beuatiful things that we take for granted and overlook. If we just slow down and take the time to look around we will see that life is pretty decent... even if we have to have some bad(dark) times to make us appreciate the good.

Diamond Rio – You're Gone Lyrics 16 years ago
The person that came along and saved him, made him right again, and straightened him out has left...

And he's not completely sure that he will be okay now that her influence is gone. He has a crutch, and now that has been taken away, and he feels like he is bound to fall face first.

Phil Collins – Do You Remember? Lyrics 16 years ago
I am not sure how this song reminds people of good memories. The entire song is talking about the things that went wrong... the lies, the misplaced blame, the hurt.

Phil is basically saying, "You can blame me. But I remember there was plenty of wrong to go around. You lied, you never worked at it. But sure, blame me."

So many seem confued by the "I was the one you always dreamed of, You were the one I tried to draw line."

It is pretty plain to me. I was your dream guy, and you were the picture I would draw if someone asked me what my perfect woman would be.

Just Off Turner – How Much It Hurts Lyrics 16 years ago
I see it a little differently.

The songwriter already knows the relationship's over. But he wants an explaination for why he is hurting so much. He needs closure.

So he is telling her:
(1st verse)"Now is your chance to get everything out.(Speak your mind).
You were never afraid to criticize before, so why are you afraid to hurt me with the truth now?(You're always telling me I need to open mine).
Give me a chance to talk to you... At least act like you will hear me, even though I know you aren't listening, because you (foolishly) think you know everything about yourself, and life, and love already.
(And wait, wait your turn
Then shut me out cuz' you've got nothing left to learn)

Chorus: You say that your pride is an okay thing to have,(You say there's nothing wrong with being proud) but you don't seem very proud of what you have done or are doing. So tell me why you never gave us a real chance.(So, tell me what you love and say it loud) Tell me what it was that always kept us from being happy. And here is my 2 cents, if you care.(If you're listening this is how much it hurts)

2nd verse: You think that because I'm not you, because I haven't been through the things you have, that I can't understand, that I can't know what to do or how you feel.(I'm wrong again, but not because of where I stand but where I've been).
And it hurts more than you could ever know, it's killing me, but I it's over, and I know it.(And it burns, you know it burns like hell) It hurts to know that we will never work and all I can do for you is hope you find the happiness you are looking for, I hope you are okay. I hope one day you let someone try to love you.(To know there's nothing left to do but wish you well)

Chorus variation: I was big enough to sit here, knowing you never let me in, you lied to me, decieved me with your feelings, and let you try to explain yourself. (I've been good enough to stay and hear you out). But I'm right... this time I am right(about you never giving us a real shot.)(But you're wrong - You're never wrong).

Chorus variation: This whole time I went along with what you told me when you said you loved me, you wanted me.(I've been giving you the benefit of the doubt) And now I am torn up inside because of it.(If you're listening this is how much it hurts)
