I think I've got a theory about this song. I think it's about discovering that the girl you're with could be pregnant, and all the feelings and excitement and dread that comes with it. "The morning after" - reference to a failing in acquiring contraception? "We broke up a month ago, and I grew up, I didn't know" - they broke up, she's just let him know she's pregnant, he's realising he has to grow up. "It's always been wait and see" - he knows this girl's unpredictable: is what she's saying true? "A happy day, and then you pay" - The 'happy day' of having sex; the 'payment' of parenthood. "And feel like shit the morning after" - Could be a reference to morning sickness, could just be the sickness of impending fatherhood. "But now I feel changed around, and instead of falling down" - he's beginning to relish the idea of the responsibility. He's a changed man and the idea of being a father is keeping him up "Situations get fucked up, and turned around, sooner or later" - He realises they're broken up, it's not the ideal situation, but that this could turn everything around for him. "I could be another fool, or an exception to the rule" - he realises he can be a deadbeat dad, or he can stand up and take responsibility, be the exception, do something great for this woman and this kid. "She'll decide what she wants" - Is she going to keep the baby? Will he be a part of its life? "I'll probably be the last to know, no-one says until it shows" - Other people will come first, he might not hear his part in the baby's life for some time. The truth won't come out til she's starting to show. "They want you or they don't" - Either the woman and baby will want him in their lives, or they won't. "Say yes..." - He realises what he really wants, and is hoping the woman will agree. Just a theory, but it's what I always think this song means. |

Just before my mum died she got really into Elliott Smith, particularly Waltz #2. It's years since she died, and I spent 4-5 years just listening to Waltz #2 before I branched out. I always saw a message in it, "I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow" felt like a goodbye to me. About a year ago, I discovered this one. My name is Georgia, and I've suffered from a lot of the problems this song tackles. I feel like my mum left me Elliott, for all the times it was tough. As though she's still here, still speaking to me through Elliott's music. It makes it all so much more powerful. |

Oh God this song reminds me of being 16 and absolutely besotted with this one guy. He was a drug and I was so addicted to him. When he broke up with me I remember crying down the phone to my best friend and listening to the 'without you everything falls apart' bit over and over and over. Haha. But very sexy song indeed. |

It sounds corny, but this song reminds me of a time when I was going away on holiday for a while and my boyfriend and I sat in the car the day before I went away and listened to this song in silence. I just remember the rain on the window and the tears falling. We aren't together anymore but it always makes me sad as I remember that day. I think its about someone leaving, not necessarily dying, but going away, and it feeling (whether true or not) as if they'll never come back. |

I think this is about being in love with someone who doesn't love you back, and knowing you have to stop - leave - before you hurt yourself any more. I certainly know what he means! Not my preferred style of music, but I do like this song. Very heartfelt. I love the line 'If I lose the highs, at least I'm spared the lows'. |

This song is, in my opinion, the most brutally honest depiction of the real emotion involved in relationships. It reminds me a bit of my last serious relationship, actually. Most of the time we were completely addicted to each other, but occasionally, one of us would be feeling a bit funny and the other one of us would just plead for anything to make it better. It's a very desperate song, but relationships are desperate. I love love love this song. |

I don't think this is so much about sex, I think this is about getting back together. "free your mind of doubt and danger" is about not being scared to be back with the person, "be for real, don't be a stranger" means that they should no longer be apart. "2 Become 1" is about two people becoming one entity again. "I had a little love, now I'm back for more" is about the relationship not being so satisfying first time around, but wanting to make it better this time. "Are you as good as I remember baby" is pretty self-explanatory. There's another version of this in which instead of singing "girls and boys go good together" Victoria sings "love will bring us back together" which again is pretty self-explanatory. |

To me, this is a story of a relationship like the one I had with my ex. He had long hair, and was very macho and strong, but once we were together, it turned out he was weak and vulnerable and just wanted to be loved. But I was very private about my love for him and while everyone knew how much he loved me, few people knew how much I loved him "I loved you first". But in the end I betrayed my Samson, and he lost his strength through being betrayed, like having his hair cut. I think this is the most beautiful song ever written, and I think buffyx makes a great explanation of the song. |
