In "Hollow", Björk took inspiration from her "ancestors and DNA, that the grounds open below you and you can feel your mother and her mother, and her mother, and her mother, and her mother 30,000 years back. So suddenly you're this kinda tunnel, or trunk of DNA… All these ghosts come up so it ended up being a Halloween song and quite gothic in a way… It's like being part of this everlasting necklace when you're just a bead on a chain and you sort of want to belong and be a part of it and it's just like a miracle." |

In the second verse, I think the captain turns the boat and avoids crashing into the rock. When he sees the gull he knows there must be land somewhere near, thats why "He asks not why".
The rhyme they repeat is And the changes of no consequence will pick up the reins from nowhere.
Meaning if you don't derive consequences of what is happening to you and don't do something about it, the reins of your fate/life will be picked from nowhere. I think its about knowing consciously where you're going and what your aim is. Otherwise life will just lead you from one disaster to another |

MandyBowie gave a good explanation, yet I don't think David would call it "filthy". There must be something darker in it. I don't think there's much love between Ramona and him, I think it's just sexual, therefore "filthy". ("If there was only something between us, Other than our clothes")
What makes most sense to me is that it's about cheating on your spouse because you find someone interesting and can't let her go, there's something that attracts him to her although he has a wifeúgirlfriend and doesn't want to end the relationship. It's more of a curiosity. Yet in the flirt he still sees his wife ("Are you wearing Miranda's clothes?")
The other part of the song is about fear of death, then conquering death and wanting to let everyone know it's not as horrible as it seems. |

The religion thing seems pretty clear to me - faith should have never been institutionalised. Once it becomes an organisation, like church, dogmas arise and the whole faith turns into "being in church on time every sunday". Plus wars and power over people. David said that in interviews from 70s-80s that he believes in energy but he wouldn't put a name on it (God). I think that's because of the whole institution - church.
The rest of the song is in my opinion about looking for a purpose in life. Like - you do lots of thing rather automatically and at the end of the day you question yourself if this is really what you're supposed to do, if this is how you want to fulfill your life.
The modern love part is probably about commitment-free relationships that give you pleasure for a while and then leave you empty. |

to me it seems like when you meet your old friend you had so much fun and you once spent so much time with, maybe even a partner. Now when you don't have so much time and you can see the relationship can not continue as it used to because you're liv ing a different life now. You're just asking yourself "Was it true?" and you're so sorry it is over ("I shed a tear and asked will you go away") whilst the other person still lives the way they used to.
The videoclip to this song is sooo amazing. Initially, I preferred Bjorn for some reason but Gustaf's songs are so powerful. I mean...every song of MD is powerful but one can recognise who was it written by. |

I don't think this song is about what I think, but let me share it:
If there was a worldwide conflict, like a World War III., no one would survive it probably. It would probably be a duel (between Russia and the USA) => Duel of the dynamitee. You'd have to fight, even though you'd be more faithful to yourself and mother Earth (moon, stars and sun) than to the country you'd have to represent. This story is being told by a soldier who is tired ("my eyes are so tired, my legs they can barely carry me"). And he has no will to fight with "the thugs", so he's leaving.
Also seems as an apocalyptical song to me....like the end of the world, God is destroying the sinful Earth inhabitants, stars are falling from the sky and you and your love are trying to find a shelter, though you know you won't survive till the next day. There is also a sign of improving yourself, being a better man, like the bad ones must die and the good ones will be saved and now it's the last chance to switch to good(to "leave your home").
"But I'm no longer safe in my home
So I'm leaving you to write my happy story
Don't behave the way that you should
You should leave it 'till the thugs and all their glory"
Anyway, I think tricksiness is right and its about Gustaf being beaten. |

Now this song...I'm wondering what it is about and I hoped to find the answer here, which didnt happen :( it seems to me as if they were thinking of the old times and how it has changed (maybe because of money and fame, but I'm just guessing). And that "bring them in, she said", I'm wondering if it somehow refers to the band. I know that is the name of their first album, maybe with this song and this verse they want to point out you can't only accept one of them but all of them. The second part is I think about something else, these 2 parts don't seem to fit together...The second one is IMHO about a fear of growing old and of responsibilities and about a fear of becoming a parent or a husband. So he decided to to stay home until his heat for her dies down

because he probably doesn't feel ready for it. |
