Porcupine Tree – Russia On Ice Lyrics 2 years ago
@[kitthehacker:36866] Suicide isn't an act of prolonged violence. To me that dark, heavy section sounds like rage - if there was a music video, I could see that section showing the protaganist in a blind drunken rage, smashing up his furniture and screaming.

On the other hand, the bells tolling at the end do sound as if something final happened as sysys pointed out below. This could just be drinking oneself to death however.

@[morgan8198:34902] I did the same and was surprised as well at some of the interpretations. I always read it as "a full heart is not as heavy as an empty heart" but your interpretation fits it better and more generally.

Thin Lizzy – Night Life Lyrics 8 years ago
The "they say" in the refrain seems like a clear nod to "Night Life" by Willie Nelson.

Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart Lyrics 10 years ago
There's not much to interpret here; the lyrics are pretty clear.

Morrissey lived through a time when the working class of England were getting blatantly (as opposed to subtly) shafted by the Tories and the English government and monarchy were still shamelessly supporting the subjugation of catholics in Northern Ireland and allowing peaceful hunger strikers to perish in their cells. "New Labor", which I'm guessing he's referring to in this song, is a perverse doublespeak version of the old Labor party.

I'm Irish. FWIW, I have zero problems with English people - people are people. I do detest the monarchy for their past crimes and their reluctance to make reparations for all the countries they messed up. The fact that they are lauded and fawned upon across the world sickens me. I detest the cowardly UK radio stations who refused to play this song and the EA executives who censored it. We owe a lot to English artists like Morrissey and Elvis Costello who spoke up against Thatcher and her ilk, people who bent the rules to allow garbage like Rupert Murdoch get a foothold to build their monopolies, people who fostered a culture of greed and corruption which continues to this day.

Although Morrissey dreams of a time when he could be proud to wave the English flag without being associated with the BNP/racism, I dream of a time when I could proudly wave the tricolor without being associated with the terrorists and nationalist scum here in Ireland. All of our political parties grew up to become Tories - one more real-life manifestation of Orwell's dinner party - and yet still I hear Irish people blaming "the English". Grow a pair. Most of the anti-English rabble cannot even speak Irish. Fight for your rights. As the song says, hold on to your integrity, live freely, and challenge the actual current problems in Ireland - which have been created by the Irish, for the Irish. Get your blood up and show some heart.

And just to confirm Treestump's post, Chris said it in an interview in RIP Magazine, April 1994 (check the Unofficial Soundgarden Homepage).

I always guessed that this song was about abortion. I guess I wasn't *totally* wrong :) Great lyrics. Thanks Treestump.

Soundgarden – Never the Machine Forever Lyrics 17 years ago
For some reason I had a "memory" that this song was inspired by a novel but that's probably wrong.

It's based on Kim's personal experiences and according to him, "it's about a life-and-death match between an individual and a less specifically defined entity" - KERRANG!, March 16, 1996. The lyrics suggest that the voice in the song is the victor in the end, presumably due to their ambition, creativity, resourcefulness, and heart, all of which the machine lacks.

The machine is probably a metaphor. Kim stated that "It's not about computers" - CMJ New Music Monthly, July 1996.

In any case, this is one of Soundgarden's most interesting songs.
