Lady GaGa – Poker Face Lyrics 15 years ago
She's saying men are a game, and she plays very well. She wants to use them for what they can offer, rolling with the punching, doing what's needed to win the game (let them fold, raise or stay), lovegame (the name of the "card" game in question), having a knack for the game (inuition) playing with spades (the highest suit) from the beginning, meaning to play with your best from the start, and when he's already hooked, she'll use her best card, his emtion for her.
He can't read my poker face is her being able to play him without his knowing.

She always runs the risk of having feelings, and maybe actually like this guy, but isn't sure, so she's still playing (I wanna roll with him), and taking that risk is fun for the guy if it's her. The russian roulette metaphor is saying that it's not fun playing a game of hit or miss if the risks aren't substantial and drastic, love being rough is just saying the obvious.

Bloc Party – Signs Lyrics 15 years ago
Without reading anymore of anyon else's thoughts... I think that it's about someone who died (obviously) or killed themselves.
Two birds in an old oak tree one for you and one for me reminds him of them together. Bluebells in late december being the fact that by late december they should be dead, but they're not. He states he sees almost everything as a sign now because he needs to.
If suicide's the case, or an illness that came suddenly, he says that the last time they were together he could tell something was wrong, but she wasn't the type to say anything about that sort of thing because she didn't like to bother people or him with that, so she'd rather drown in the feelings than try to express. But he states that he's the one "drowning" now, because of what she did.
"I could sleep forever..." Recently, she's been coming to him in his dreams more and more, and he thinks perhaps it's not just dreams, because now the details are clearer, "more fleshed out, fuller faced, in your confirmation dress." Someone stated that Catholics are buried in a confirmation dress... If she's suddenly coming to him in her confirmation dress, maybe he sees it as it must actually be HER coming to him, since it's more vivid, and is what she was buried in. She is checking on him because she's worried about him, because despite HER being the one who is dead, she can sense that he's drowing and can't take it. So now she is checking on him, knowing that because recently he's having a much harder time dealing than normal, it's getting to be too much. He normally dreams about her, but now it's more clear because she needs to help him.
"At your funeral I was so upset... In your life you were larger than this, statuesque.." A lot of people don't get hit by the reality of death until they see the person's body. When you see their body, it hits. You realize that, even though it's the same body, you can tell something is missing. Because, like a picture can't show you a personality, a person's body can't fill a room the way someone's charisma, charm, personality can. He was upset to see it because the shock of seeing her there, seeming so small (in a figurative sense), that it's not how he remembers her and isn't a good representation of her. Many people are upset by the body because it seems like a different person.
He sees many things as signs that might not even be because he has to believe in something in order to not drown. Since her coming to him in his dreams, he believes it really is her soul coming to check on him and make sure he's okay, because he misses her so much. He has to believe that, not only to cope, but because the change in vividness makes him believe that something must be different.
I dunno, to me, this is what I see. It seems so clear to me this way.

Saving Jane – Supergirl Lyrics 15 years ago
While this song *is* catchy.... I'm infuriated by the blatant ripoff of the drum beat from Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode.
Listen to Personal Jesus at 2:14. Now Listen to Supergirl 1:00 - 1:39. It's not IDENTICAL or they'd get sued I'm sure, but it's a ripoff nonethless. Disgusting.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Run Through the Jungle Lyrics 15 years ago
Even though I'm pretty young for a CCR fan (25), this is my absolute favorite song, I could (and have) listened to it repeatedly.
I agree with the anti Vietman references.
The first poster is wrong, in that he's saying that the devil is them, "satan cries take aim." It's obviously us, even just taking that it's spoken in English and the idea of satan (are they of a religion that has satan, or something else?).

This song seems to fit with other songs, like Weight the of World sounds like a person dying slowly.... and Racing Rats "when the time comes that you're no longer there, fall down to my knees...." etc... I mean, they have so many recurring themes in their songs...

Editors – All Sparks Lyrics 15 years ago
Am I the only who hears "well be careful angel this life is just too long" instead of hard? Maybe it's the version I have? I feel like that makes more sense... like saying you're clever and bright now but soon you'll be irrelevent: answering questions/casting opinions is them being clever, bouncing cigarette a metaphor for bright, and the side of the road is the great bright world... While a cigarette is smoked it's important and the only thing in existant, the person is done with it or bored, and it gets discarded and forgotten, where it slowly goes out, but no one even notices, because they care too little to even watch it happen.... so the "too long" seems to fit better.....
"This life is just too long" becuase you're left to burn out with no one watching or caring, at which point the fall is just too painful and fruitless. If no one cares or is watching you, all your actions are pointless, and there's nothing more painful.
The song doesn't seem like it's about how hard this is, how long it is. "Burn out" is a long slow process.... it just fits much better....
I haven't gotten the CD yet in the mail, so I don't know if it has a lyrics sheet yet, so maybe I'm wrong...

To me, "Too hard" just doesn't really fit with the theme of the song as much....

Pretty obvious. It's about how people will make something of nothing, and eventually cause hysteria, from nothing.

This song is so sarcastic. "That's right!" It's just about how people will sell anything that makes them human or good just to get ahead, or even just appar to be ahead.

Tub Ring – Sharpening The Sticks Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is obvious. It's about how people, maybe even governmets, won't notice some very real threat just because it's small if there's a more obvious threat.
"Cause we're just sharpening oursticks."
He or she is doing something so bad that you'll ignore because we're simply fighting with some small weapon, meanwhile it's always those threats that win.

The whole band it great, the lyrics are fantastic, but Kleiner makes this band, sorry. And he's damn gorgeous

I love how dramatic this song is.

The music is so uppity and happy.

Eve 6 – Bring the Night On Lyrics 15 years ago
This is actually my absolute favorite song of theirs. He's just ever the wordsmith. This and Showerhead, just sung very well, mixing words. FightsLiesWhiteOrOtherwise is somehow all one word.
And being an insomniac of sorts, I can relate to the songs he sings about it. Especially "Tossing and turning that, is getting repetative, swallow a sedative." (I know the insert says those are not the lyrics, but that's really how I hear it.)

Depeche Mode – Dream On Lyrics 15 years ago
Good song, I always thought he was saying, "Careful what you're given."
I always thought that made more sense, like saying you can do whatever the hell you do, but if someone offers you up something new, don't take it, it's gonna ruin everything.
Either way, I fuckin love "You're death and living reconciled." So poetic, so good.

Depeche Mode – A Question Of Time Lyrics 15 years ago
LMAO newwavefan28.
I'm into the vampire stuff as well (most supernatural lore, but mostly vamps), and have found MANY similarities to vampires in a LOT of their songs.
ESPECIALLY One Caress, Sister of Night, In Your Room, Nothing., and I Feel Loved,
But it's VERY easy to get that from Black Celebration, Personal Jesus, I Feel You (besides the sexual nature, though they tend to be suxually oriented as far as supernatural things go), Stripped, StrangeLove, More Than A Party.
Hell, I have a playlist entitled, "Vampire" that's comprised of JUST 34 DM songs.

Depeche Mode – Ice Machine Lyrics 15 years ago
After much deliberation with this song, I think I *might* have come up with an idea. a few actually.
My first is that it sounds like an affair he shouldn't be involved in. A very long winded secret affair that he knows he should be giving up, or HAS already, and is constantly reminded of why he stays. "Running through my head secretly," being all he can think of. "Shouts of the boys in the factory," perhaps how he knows her? "I ring you on the telephone silently," is reference to it being hidden. "Like blood, like the wine in the dark room scene," sounds like a refernence to love, as blood and the heart is often a metaphor, and the dark room scene sounds like, again, a secret reunion, perhaps they get together at work or something.
The second verse sounds like perhaps a letter to end the situation. "A letter once composed, seven years long and as tall as a tree" he wrote a long winded letter ending it,
Third verse, "resurrect as a feeling..." is the reminder. Either why he can't forget, or an affair or a woman he left long ago, and meets again later, and the earlier verses are just the story of a while ago. Sounds like sunrise, "resurrect as a feeling..." could be a metaphor for a new beginning?
And the last verse is meeting her again, and being able to be out and about, knowing no one would see them, and they can enjoy the small things, and their affair from days long ago, or their time together while it's still possible.
Or, another possibility is literally about a factory. The sounds and sights of being in the working class, and things it takes, destroys, uses. A letter, once composed, WOULD be a tree, but now it's simply reports of how everything is going?
Resurrect as a feeling sounds like sunrise still, a city waking up, and the view would be the vision of a picture, while the air we breathe has to do with the emissions... Then the last verse doesn't fit, just as the second doesn't fit for my first breakdown of the song.
My third thought is just when you write a song, you think up the musical parts first, and sometimes you just make up nonsense words that rhyme and have the correct amounts of syllables and sounds. You later replace those words with the real lyrics which make more sense. BUT, perhaps these were the lyrics they thought of, and they were intriguing, and they realized that the song was fine as is.
It would fit this way, when you think, because "The dark room scene," "Efficiency," The air we breathe," The Dancing Feet," and "The Ice Machine." ALL have four syllables, with the last ending in "EEE hee eee ee EEE, eee ee e."
It sounds like there was either another verse (perhaps in the minute or so outro,) that was going to make the title Ice Machine (the songs last words were meant to be these?), and, even though the verse was deleted, they got attached to the name, or liked the mystery of a song name that seemingly has nothing to do with the song.
It's my feeling that maybe this last verse was going to explain everything, and tie it all together, but they chopped it off the keept the myster.
Or it's about murder. Hell, the shouts of the boys in the factory, the blood, dark room scene..

They are self proclaimed musical thieves. Half their songs steal and change a lyric, the others talk about stealing music.
This is their best song, on thier best album.

This really has nothing on the DM version. I'm a fan of both songs (I actually LOVED this version far before I even knew who Depeche Mode WAS to be honest), but DM wins by far.
This version sounds like he doesn't know English AT ALL and just wrote anything to make a song, while the DM version, same lyrics, sounds like it makes sense.
Maybe my bias for DM is clouding me here.

Blink-182 – Stockholm Syndrome Lyrics 16 years ago
I read the thing and what mark said and all that. But I kinda also think it's literally about Stockholme Syndrome. A hostage beginning to identify with his or her captor.
I feel it's from the hostage's point of view. Things get desperate, and he or she knows that they're going to die, because of the situation, but they're upset, because they've fallen in love with that person. "It's too late to save me, you're too late." And "I'ms ick from apprehension, I'm crippled from exhaustion, and I dread the moment you finally come to kill me."

I agree with Girlie1202 (?). It sounds like "Live, or die." In every line, it goes that way. This is what happens if I don't do it, here's what if I do. Everything Girlie said is very sensible. Which would also explain the sense of doomed optimism.
Also?
"One gonna heal my body another gonna heal my pain". Heal by body obviously means life, while healing his pain would be suicide, as emotional pain is too hard to live with.

I love the sheer apathy in the music and delivery in a song that is so very upbeat and happy sounding.
The vocals contradict the lyrics on every level, which makes this one of my favorite songs.
I wouldn't have been able to tell DG wrote this if I didn't know.
It's so enlightened, something moves him enough to be optomistic, and want to change. The want to change is very passionate... and yet, there're the vocals.
Ugh, amazing.

How just this song get more speculation than Ice Machine. It's not as catchy, not as weird, obscure, or even as good.

Oh my god.
It's not about fucking Jesus. Shit.
They just use religious metaphors a lot. They're not blinded bible thumpers. I personally just think that the only way they can the intensity and passion in their lyrics along with the severity is to use religious metaphors. They have more impact and meaning.
If they were soo religious, would they expect to "find god laughing" upon death?

Depeche Mode – I Feel You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about sex.
"I feel you, each move you make"?
I feel you, each breath you take?
Where angels sing, *spread their wings*?
To be, I think it's about orgasm. Too many references, I mean, spread their wings just sounds TOO suggestive, too much metaphor.
And I don't think so much that it's love pre se, just that when you're involved in sex, your body makes you feel these things.
That in the heat of the moment, it can feel like heaven.
And I think that "The kingdom come" and "babylon" are very suggestive.
There was never a doubt in my mind it was about sex. Till someone said drugs.
I feel you, each move you make, each breath you take," it's intense and you feel everything.
But it could all be about drugs. And lots of times, those two meanings for a song are interchangeable.
Ignore my repeating, and if I make no sense, I've taken sleeping pills.

"There's one more dead, with a hole in his head...."
This is like the best 30 seconds of music done by anyone, even DM. It's like carnival music. Something out of the X-Files (or would later be), and it's just downright crazy sounding.
I think it lends meaning to the song.
To me this song is making fun of war, especially religious ones (arent they all?). And how it's basically a circus. I dunno. It's just what I personally grasp.

This is such a heart breaking cover. I am a fan of the original, but seriously, when a band can take your song, slow it down, with just two slow acoustic guitars and still blow you out of the water? Watch out.
This song is in the style of how Johnny Cash covered Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Covering a song, putting more emotion into it, and improving it tenfold.

I prefer the Bizarre Version, as I worship heavy synth. I actually only like 2 bands without synths, I just realized. I fucking LOVE a good keyboard, and this song, Bizarre version, is an absolute favorite. Along with Shake the Disease, for the use of the dark carnival sounding synth, sounds like something out of the xfiles.
Definitely a top 5.
1. Shake the Disease
2. Photographic (Bizarre)
3. Everything Counts
4. Suffer Well
5. Never Let Me Down Again
I'm honestly not sure if these are all really popular songs, as I don't listen to the radio, just the albums and MP3s
