Murder by Death – Organ Grinder Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's "In borrowed clothes and fake jewels."

Amazing song.

I love the way he picks these weird topics that no one else would think of and then writes heartbreakingly beautiful songs about them...

The titles of the songs on this album don't necessarily have anything to do with the songs... They're all titles of books, movies, plays, or parodies thereof.

Also, at certain points in the song when he comes back to the chorus, he changes the first line. Sometimes he says "Take me out tonight," and I know at least once he says "Save my life tonight." I think there's a third one but I can't remember right now what it was.

The lyrics posted are correct. The song is about how he used to be Christian when he was younger, but fell away. The first verse illustrates this well. "I used to be such a burning example... I used to be so original... I used to care I was being cared for..." etc. Especially the line about "I was about my father's work."

The chorus comes in and says that he realizes he's trapped with all the people who will be in Hell in the end. He asks God to save him and says "This ship of fools I'm on will sink." By saying "I'm my own stone around my neck," he's admitting that his actions have led him to sink with everyone else. Then he says "If you'd be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give." He wants desperately to be saved.

The second verse can be interpreted like the first, just him talking about how he used to be so good before he gave everything up.

Then there's the part at the end of the song. No one says "Things that were heard at the scene of the accident," but that's there to tell you the point of what's said. It's supposed to represent his eventual death, and people's remarks as to what happened.
