1. The King in Yellow refers to a famous and often referenced volume of occult short stories by Robert W. Chambers, not something by Heinlein.

2. You don't need to read anything to understand BOC.

Third verse here is wrong. Should be:

"Don't report this, agents of fortune"

Chuck Berry – You Never Can Tell Lyrics 8 years ago
As mentioned, this song is about a teenage couple that managed to stay together, against the odds. The oldsters who observe this, having expected it to fall apart quickly, are surprised and say "huh, that's life, you never can tell".

This song probably had personal meaning to Chuck Berry. In 1959, he was arrested and imprisoned on trumped up charges of violating the "Mann Act", related to a sexual relationship he allegedly had with an underage girl. This song was written while Berry was in prison.

And no, this song is not about a young couple who have died, as one comment would have it. The use of past tense in the song is just the perspective chosen by the songwriter, nothing more.

Melanie Safka – Brand New Key Lyrics 9 years ago
Melanie herself has suggested that people not to take this song to seriously, but the lyrics are pretty simple to interpret and I'm sure she knew *exactly* what people would think, when she wrote them.

First, old time quad roller skates needed a key to take them on and off. If you lost your key, you could use a needle nose pliers, with some difficulty.

The 'lock and key' context of this song is also a classic euphemism for sex, and the song practically drips with teenage female sexual longing and awakening with practically every line. The young woman has had some experience already ("I go pretty far", "I've been all around the world"), but wants this particular young man, who's apparently more interested in someone else ("but you weren't alone").

The obvious sexual innuendo actually got this song banned from play by some radio stations back in 1971.

The Jackson 5 – I Want You Back Lyrics 9 years ago
There's an incorrect lyric there. It's not:

Cause now since I see you it is all
I want you back

It's:

But now since I see you in his arms
I want you back

Actually makes sense this way!

himher, thanks for your help. I haven't listened to the EP version, but on Rhumb Line, it sounds like Allie sings 3 lines, not 4, that might be:

"Goodbye, good luck"

The chorus of this song is quite literate and melancholy. And definitely a bit eerie how this song seems to presage Pike's death.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Head On Lyrics 15 years ago
Several Mary Chain songs, including this one, are basically about drugs, dressed up in the language of love and sex. Getting a sexual feeling from drug use, if you will. Of course Jiim Reid denies it now, but considering his situation at the time these songs were written, his denials don't hold up.

submissions
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Never Understand Lyrics 15 years ago
This amazing song is a paean to the delicious pleasures of an excessive lifestyle. And how, inevitably, some people in your life won't get the appeal.

And for some reason, this is about the only one of their big hits that the brothers Reid never seem to play live anymore.

Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Lyrics 16 years ago
Here's my take on some key lyrics from this song:

"She spied the ring on His Honor's finger
A thousand years in one piece of silver
She took it from his lily-white hand"

'His Honor' would typically refer to an older gentleman, not a boyfriend or lover. In this case, one who's died, thus his 'lily while hand'. The word 'spied' suggests that Johanna is looking at the ring secretly or guiltily. Also, the ring is 'on' his finger, not in his hand; he isn't giving her the ring, she takes it off of his finger.

"Showed no fear--she'd seen the thing
In the Young Men's Wing at Sloan-Kettering"

I think the 'thing' she'd seen at Sloan-Kettering was death, not the ring. Thus she was able to take the ring off the dead man's hand; she 'showed no fear' because she's been around dead people before.

"His Honor drove southward seeking exotica
Down to the Pueblo huts of New Mexico
Cut his teeth on turquoise harmonicas"

'Exotica' could mean an antiquity. Turquose, often combined with silver; could the thousand year old ring have been from Mexico? Aztec, maybe?

Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running Lyrics 16 years ago
The person singing this song could be a criminal, planning on hitting a rival; they know his name, but not when or how he'll strike. Keep the car running is a common expression from 1940s gangster movies.

While some of the lyrics suggest that he may feel guilty about what he does, and that he knows he'll likely get killed himself one day, I think all the religious and quasi-religious song meanings people are coming up with here to be a bit overwrought.

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 16 years ago
I haven't read every post here, so I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but I was dumbstruck by Isaac's lyric -
'The universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were'
This is literally correct, topologically, according to theory. There is no 'edge', no outer margin of the universe, and nothing outside the universe. Space-time curves back on itself, and you would actually wind up where you started eventually. It's hard for us humans to picture it, limited as we are to thinking in 3 dimensions.
However, the lyric -
'Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic'
is completely wrong. Very different composition, and blood plasma is only 1/8th the concentration (osmolarity) of seawater. That's basically why drinking seawater instead of fresh water will kill you.

Pela – Drop me off Lyrics 17 years ago
In a sleep i see a scene
a sea of comfort and serene
we’re walking through some fields of glass
up to our waist into our past
watch the road girl you are driving
you’ll probably kill us both
or drop me off there at the corner
it’s better if we don’t

but you are the fortunate one in this song
you are the fortunate one so wake up, wake up

we should make a holiday cause we probably seen it all
and if my name is dead weight
it’s been carried on too far

up came the windy night
don’t ask me about the cold ones
cause i was saving up my stares
and bouncing them off no one
so turn your head girl you are driving
you’ll probably kill us both
or drop me off there at the corner
it’s better if we don’t

you are the fortunate one in this song
you are the fortunate one in this song
you are the fortunate one
so wake up
or leave

Pela – Lost to the Lonesome Lyrics 17 years ago
Hey, we should crash the party on christmas eve
hey, we should write our name on every wall we see
hey, we should break our wallets at every bar
hey, we could break the bed without broken hearts
la la la la
and we could leave the lonely and lost
to their lonesome hearts
don’t just stand there with your face in your hands
don’t just stand there
clean up your broken glass!

hey, we should crash the party on new years eve
hey, we should write our name on every wall we see
la la la la
and we could leave the lonely and lost
to their lonesome hearts

don’t just stand there like a ghost in my room
don’t just stand there with that same old t.v. set
don’t just stand there pointing out west
and don’t stand there telling me i’m nothing

don’t just stand there just tell me i’m something
don’t just stand there just tell me i’m something
don’t just stand there i am something

Pela – Tenement Teeth Lyrics 17 years ago
Give us a beat
for our halfway hearts and tenement teeth!
a beat
to fill up the room
they’ll be splitting soon and dancing without feet
a song
when the days are long and your friends have gone
lock the door, it won’t hurt no more
you won’t feel the floor
it’s only love
it’s only love
we did this before it’s only love

and when the record’s done
let it scrape and scratch
let’s drag up the past and dance
so give us a beat
for our halfway hearts and tenement teeth!

it’s only love
it’s only love
we did this before it’s only love

recognized it right from the start
it was the sound of a breaking heart
are we hammering in our nails?
are we taking down the sails?

according to the pages in books
on modern psychology
a broken heart might not restart
and very well might follow me
down into the water, down into the water
and downward we descend
well i kissed your lips of ruby red
and this is what was said

"land"
"land"
"land"
"land"

Modest Mouse – Convenient Parking Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song has anything at all to do with drugs. It's pretty obvious that it's about suburban sprawl and traffic congestion, from the lyrics and even the ironic song title. Anyone who lives in Sammamish/Issaquah (like me) can understand this song easily enough.

Pixies – U-Mass Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah it's definitely a sarcastic song aimed at college kids. It's about U Mass, sure, but it could be just about any liberal arts school.
"we're not just kids" - keep telling yourself that, kids.
"to say the least" - a haughty affectation.
"ideas to us that's dear" - to you, but no one else.
"like capitalist, like communist" - embracing political concepts, without really knowing what they mean. Another typical college affectation.
"like lots of things you've heard about" - A way to refer to concepts that you don't really understand yourself.

Yeah, definitely mocking college kids. And mocking himself a bit too, since Black was also a pasty white intellectual nerdy college kid.

Great great rocking song! Both the JAMC and the Pixies versions are excellent, and actually not all that different, which might make you wonder why the Pixies decided to cover it.
Lyrically, though, it's one of the least interesting and most obvious Pixies songs, because of course, it wasn't written by Black.

Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics 17 years ago
Well I just listened to an early recorded live version of this song again (before Carnavas came out), and in it he clearly says

But it's definitely different on the album version.
I think Brian just likes to tweak the lyrics.
