Nine Inch Nails – Mr. Self Destruct Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's about fear and control. The control fear has over you is easier than dealing with life. Mr Self Destruct represents escape through sex, violence, drugs, or any vices these give temporary release but ultimately multiply the characters problems ("I drag you down, I use you up") then their is actually more to deal with. Mr Self Destruct also represents societies and the individuals nihilism (nothingness, is represented throughout the album by the sound of detached machinery or mechanical lyrics). Nihil is also the Latin word for nothing, from which the words "annihilate", "nil", and "nihilist" are derived this is significant since the characters apathy and the greater societies apathy toward life will lead to the characters destruction. Lyrics: I am the truth from which you run (and I control you) I am a silencing machine (and I control you) I am the end of all your dreams (and I control you) ^^^ Trent said The Downward Spiral was about a character shedding away everything to a potential nothingness. This represents the characters lack of ability to deal with problems, to connect and is why they will have nothingness then destroy their dreams. |

Nine Inch Nails – Survivalism Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I should have listened to her So hard to keep control We kept on eating but Our bloated belly's still not full She gave us all she had but We went and took some more Can't seem to shut her legs Our mother nature is a whore *About human beings destroying the planet from eco destruction and wastage through gluttony and materialism. I got my propaganda I got revisionism I got my violence In hi-def ultra-realism All a part of this great nation I got my fist I got my plan I got survivalism *In my opinion sounds like TV and it's effects on people with the herd mentality. Yet it is culturally exceptable whilst at the same time we are being dumbed down by it. Hypnotic sound of sirens Echoing through the street The cocking of the rifles The marching of the feet You see your world on fire Don't try to act surprised We did just what you told us Lost our faith along the way and found ourselves believing your lies *Refers to last one a culture so brainwashed by TV and media that when the world burns around them they have to face the lies that politicians have been saying for years. Only at that time do the people reclaim there free will. All bruised and broken, bleeding She asked to take my hand I turned, just keep on walking But you'd do the same thing in the circumstance I'm sure you'll understand *Think Trent is referencing those brainwashed people that still refuse to accept what is happening at this point the individuals psyche turns to an animal like survival instinct of himself/herself at any cost and refuses to see others. |
Nine Inch Nails – My Violent Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Zero_%28political_notion%29 Trent is a smart man I am sure album name is for a reason. If US policy is any indicator Year Zero is now or started back when US invaded Iraq in 2003. From what I see from first 2 songs released I see some elements of downward spiral there but with political connotations. Year Zero seems is based on worldwide suffering in a crazy time but still manages to keep it very introspective lyrically like only Trent Reznor can I have a good feeling about this album! Another interesting link to make what you want of http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1552470/20070215/nine_inch_nails.jhtml |

A Perfect Circle – Sleeping Beauty Lyrics | 17 years ago |
to me this song is about a girl suffering from drug addiction. he thinks he can save her but she is lost and cannot no longer see her own beauty which he see's despite everything. very moving and sad song. Heroin also sedates central nervous system making you drowsy for hours which is why they use the words Sleeping Beauty. |
