Sonic Youth – Wish Fulfillment Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah, I think this song has a little of what everyone has commented on. I definitely feel that the song is being sung from someone who is obsessed with a stranger, possibly famous. I think the song has 2 parts. the first part establishing the obsession, and the 2nd one taking the obsession further, as the "star" takes a fall.

"Shake it baby! C'mon, scream!
Did I see your face in a magazine?"
Makes me think that maybe a actress has has possibly posed for pornography in the past, or was a dancer/prostitute, or has become one as their career fails. And this fact has been made attention to the media, and becomes a scandal. But the obsessor doesn't care. "I'm still on your side in spite of everything you do"

CocoRosie – K-Hole Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song live so much more. There is a good video here http://youtube.com/watch?v=i_XclEglAYU of them performing it at Touch and Go last year.

Just saw them perform it again at Coachella and the bass was amazing and overwhelming at the set. It made my skin crawl. Too bad they had a bunch of sound problems during that set.

Peter Gabriel – Digging In The Dirt Lyrics 17 years ago
My interpretation might be a bit biased since to me it reminds me of some very difficult times.

BalisongAbraxas, I do feel there is a sinister tone in this song, and I think PG is trying to convey that feeling, if not make a parallel of someone doing something awful. But I really don't think in reality the is killing someone physically.

To me this seems like a situation where there is an imbalance in the relationship. Where one is either being abusive physically, or emotionally, or just cold. And the voice, is the one that puts up with it, but feels he/she has no way to deal with it, which is apparent in the first part of the song.

Then when pushed to far, does something drastic, like emotionally burst, and destroy the relationship. Threatening on the spot that it's ending.

"Don't talk back, just drive the car
Shut your mouth, I know what you are
Don't say nothing, keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around, this is for real"

Then the voice changes, to be more passive, wanting, needing. The outburst is just the speaker asking for attention in the relationship.

Digging in the dirt, that expression i think can reflect on bringing up old wounds in order to hurt the other, at first, but then searching to find where things went wrong.

And it is reflected onto the partner where at the end he says "to find the places *WE* got hurt..."

Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 17 years ago
abhpro: Yes it takes place in 2022. But great art imitates real life.

George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948 but was commenting on the political changes of england and Europe post WWII.

Terry Giliams Brazil was about the ever growing bureaucracy and overprotective intrusions of governments in the late 1980's

Fritz Lang's Metropolis made in the 1920s, which is the story of a large futuristic city in the year 2026, dealt with the issues of the then emerging communism and capitalism.

There are many more dsytopian pieces of art that reflect off of current events of the time they were created.

So YZ is about a fictional dystopia in 2022, but is based on the political and historical situations of today.

Nine Inch Nails – In This Twilight Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the nuclear part is on key, so is to relationship to dying. But I also think, relating to some of what this album may be about from all the micro-sites, is that it's also about the world changing from an event, possibly for the better.

"and the longing that you feel
you know none of this real
you can find a better a place
in this twilight."

Such as the idea of establishment is destroyed with a devastating event like a nuclear bomb. And going back to a simpler time.

Nine Inch Nails – 10 Miles High Lyrics 17 years ago
Definitely about drugs... Also, Trent has mentioned many times in interviews recently, that With Teeth relates a lot to his substance abuse, and trying to overcome it. And what other song is more about addiction than closer.

I do feel though, that the title and some of the lyrics are a nod to pink floyd's "the wall". "I made it 10 miles high" a double meaning, getting high on drugs, and building a wall 10 miles high that separates himself from the world. "Tear it all down" tearing down that wall.

Roger Waters wrote the wall in reference to himself and how horrible he thought he had become as a musician. Creating this artificial wall that separated the artist from the audience. It all came from a previous tour, Waters spat in the face of a fan at a concert. I think Reznor is actually relating to this as well. His long time on the road touring, and being on drugs. Put him in this divided world.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Half Of What Lyrics 17 years ago
I'll give a little spin on this. It's definitely a song about a relationship.

But I feel there is sort of a reference, to their namesake. "...Trail of Dead." is an excerpt from a Mayan ritual prayer. A lot of the images of this song seem to depict a Mayan sacrifice or temple. "The skulls on these walls, are they connected to you?" could refer to walls of skulls that surrounded the temples. And "To scale to the top of this (grassy/misty) mountain side you're on" reminds me of images of the Mayan/Aztec pyramids, or the jungly mountains of South/Central America. And a lot of references to the Sun, which was one of the many reasons for the sacrificial rituals.

Dually, I think these images reflect onto a relationship, one that is difficult and destructive. "Cause I am only half, of what I am,
And half of that is what, the lies can do,
Where the rest is, I don't know,
And I'm not sure if I wanna know." Half of his soul/humanity has been destroyed. The other half is in poor shape from the lies of himself or the other. Trying to recover the rest may be too painful or disturbing/self destructive.

It also seems to show, that despite their may being a long running amount of pain in the relationship, it is still difficult to leave due to the attachment one has to the other. "If I was the sun, you'd be the world I'd shine onto.", "And sometimes I wonder whether my other half is you."

I think it is suppose to be
"with no greater art there are
something numbered footprints"

Definitely trying to draw a line between him and the masses he doesn't get along with.

Why? – The Hoofs Lyrics 17 years ago
I'll try to be the first to take a shot at this.

To me, it seems like Why? feels trapped or stuck in the place that he is ("Berkeley"). He's waiting for that thing, that moment, or person, that will rescue them from his grudging everyday life in this place he doesn't want to be, and even fantasizes about being rescued from there.

And in the midst of one of his fantasies, a serendipitous event causes him to focus on a sign that says the word "Patience". It seems almost as if the sign was meant or is speaking to him.

In other words, the event tells him that he will get out of his situation, he just needs to be patient and let life take him there.

Why? – Rubber Traits Lyrics 17 years ago
I partly agree with proxima, song definitely seems to be about depression. But I feel that it's more about it whittling away at the things you wish to do/accomplish. He lists the many many things he wants to do, be productive. He's trying so damn hard. But even when he has everythign all prepped and ready to go, the depression prevents him from goind any further. "I don't want to, when I feel like I could have gone longer" I think that right there totally sums it up for me. He wants to do more be more, but the depression sets in and F*%*s it all up.

Anyways, that's what this song means to me, and I feel right along with it.
