This song is totally about the novel 1984. When he says "I wonder when they'll come and get me", he's referring to the thought police. In the book, after illegal writing in his journal (tear it out of these open pages), he asks himself when they'll come and get him. He goes on to write "theyll shoot me i dont care theyll shoot me in the back of the neck i dont care down with big brother" Big Brother is the big shot. The marching sound in the background is the blank-faced Eurasian army. The line about italicized lies and bold faced headlines refers the bold faced captions "Big Brother Is Watching You" and "War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength". Everything in this song fits into the book.
PS It seems to me that both Straylight Run and Brand New have been looking at the Radiohead approach lately.... |

A full sweep of the alkaline...or something like that. I hear sleep, but if indeed he says alkaline, sweep makes more sense (especially taking into account the rest of the song). A degausser neutralizes the magnetic field of something. Usually a tape or a disc. Sort of like a full sweep... |

Arters, if by most you mean you and one other person, then maybe. But of the people who've heard it backwards, you alone think it was recorded forwards. I'd say the same, except that after zeroing in on the left speaker and playing it backwards, the sound waves prove that it was recorded that way. I don't know how you think that your argument of "No, I heard it better forwards" refutes that evidence. I'm sorry that we have to be so argumentive on this, especially since I agree with a lot of your other comments on Brand New's songs...anyways, I'm done talking about this. My opinion on the matter won't change unless one of the bandmembers themselves corrects me. |

I understand that things cut off when played backwards, but isolate the left speakers. Forwards, it fans out (). Thus, this track was recorded backwards. If I'm wrong, please explain why, but don't tell me that my point is invalid simply because you think you're certain of what it is. |

OK, Arter, I admit. It does sound like the forward version is the right one, but just by looking at the soundwaves and the direction in which they are meant to be played, you'd know it was recorded backwards. Secondly, I have tried turning off the right speaker, and it is not at all clear what he's saying. Lastly, I do at least agree with you in that it is Jesse's voice. |

I played this one backwards and got the same (this never ends). It sounds like Jesse's voice by the way...
Anyways, seeing as the whole album's about the Devil and God Raging Inside and about how he's always have to come back to God in repentance to me says that this song is him saying that he wishes that this would just end. He wants to grow out of it and mature beyond stupidity and stuff. |

The song, Millstone, on the new album reminds me of this song a lot lyrically. It's almost like the millstone's drowning him in this song. I don't know if that's what Jesse meant, but I like to believe that the two songs are linked. |

I think that this song is kind of prayer for God to lift Bono up and mold him into a better man. I've heard a lot of people tell me that "I and I" usually is used to illustrate some kind of relationship between God and man. Anyways, Bono across the board paints a picture of the celebrity life. Then he asks God for some elevation. He asks God to live him up out of the blues. Cliche? Yeah, maybe, but it fits. |

Greatest song ever!
The title, Prophecy, obviously refers to religion, right? I believe he's "confronting" the hypocritical leaders of TBN churches. Many have been caught cheating people out of their money. These are often men who once had faith in God, but realized that profit could be made off of people and were overcome with greed. They panhandle whole congregations. They've been asking people who struggle to make ends meet to make "leaps of faith" and donate huge sums of money to the church. The preacher tucks the money away for himself (essentially robbing people of their money). So how do you feel, preacher, cuase you seem a little sick to me...
