What an amazing song! One of the only times ever I have thought the cover is better than the original.
It's about someone falling in love with a musician. They haven't actually ever been with the person,
"but you're not really there, it's just the radio"
and
"don't you remember you told me you loved me baby?"
seems more like someone is listening to a song and wishing/pretending they are about you.
'I can hardly wait to be with you again" means hearing the singer again.

I definitely think this song is about a death rather than the end of a relationship, the line about the phone ringing early seems to be more fitting with this idea.
I always interpreted it as the death of someone who he was having an affair with,
"with someone new I could have started" is refering to how he could have left his wife to be with this person. The lines about arguing with his wife seem to fit in with the idea that he wasn't happily married.
"You're smaller than my wife imagined
surprised you were human" for some reason the surprised you were human part always suggests to me the idea of an affair. |

John took many influences from this song out of the media, the line 'Happiness is a worm gun' came from a billboard john saw in america with the line 'happiness is a warm gun in your hand' trust america...
'She's not a girl who misses much' john wanted a line for a girl who was smart, and got help with this line.
'The man in the crowd with the multi coloured mirrors on his hobnailed boots' was about astory john had read about a man who had mirrors on his boots so he he coul look up girls skirts.
'lying with his hands while his eyes are busy working over time' was another story from john had heard about a man who was stealing things from a shop by using a big trench coat with fake hands sticking out of the sleeves.
It was written in 3 seperate sections, the first, up to the national trust line, after which john wrote 'Dirty Old Man' on his lyrics sheet. the second section was up to the MOther Superior bit, next to which John wrote 'The Junkie' and the third section was the remainder of the song, next to which john wrote 'The gunman' |

I interpret the song as being about a boy who is in love with someone he can't have. He sees her on a silver coin - i think this is eluding to her being like a queen, so she is above his class. Also the line "im in the days of throwing rocks" means he is probably young, a teenager. |

this has been my favourite song ever for ages and ages. everytime i hear the start, with the big crash on the cymbol, i have to stop what i'm doing and listen to the whole song, and take in everything about it.
