God, this song is killer. Lyrical genius (usually I use that term sarcastically, but I'm not here). It's deep and raw and almost heart-wrenching. I can't get enough of it. SK6ers has a common theme of "trying hard to make it, and not quite making it, but it's still sort of okay". This song has some of that with a touch of "reality bites". I don't know the significance of being "born in the spring". Having a higher degree of optimism? Being better at new beginnings? Not having to live through a metaphorical "winter"? I don't know, but I like it. |

I love how "If you want more love / Why don't you say so" contrasts against his earlier song "Your Body is a Wonderland", which has the lyric "If you want love / we'll make it". I feel like this was probably purposeful and shows that he's gotten a little more mature/cynical/raw about love in the past decade or so. |

This song is amazing--I saw them play it when they came to UMaine. It was a teeny tiny audience, and the show completely awesome. The story that he told before they played this song was that he took his little brother and his girlfriend to the movies one night, and he noticed that the two thirteen-year-olds didn't see much of the movie in lieu of making out, hah. |

I love this song...not that I don't love every Ray Lamontagne song... It's so amazingly emotion-evoking. My favorite lines are "A man needs something he can hold on to / A nine-pound hammer or a woman like you / either of them things will do". I think he's saying that he needs her, but if she won't have him, he'll have to distract himself so as not to go mad or, say, end up drunk in a ditch. |

Haha, granted, this song is not an example of Shakira's musical genius (far from it, in fact). And the lyrics are absolutely horrendous. ("Como se llama, bonita, mi casa, su casa" get the response: "Oh baby when you talk like that You make a woman go mad"??) Eh... if someone said "Como se llama, bonita, mi casa, su casa" to me, I probably would only get a bit confused, not "go mad". But, as a fan of Shakira and despiser of typical "mainstream music", I must say, this song is really fun and dance-able, and I like it a lot. Not for its musical quality, of course, but because it makes me want to dance and move and sing it really loud and out of tune and just generally make a fool of myself for the 3 minutes and 40 seconds that it's playing...which is always a good quality in music. =) That's my two cents. |
