Its killing me to see you. ^To me this part is setting the stage for what he's going to say...he wishes she would just commit and not be so dreamy (obsessed with stars). He begins the "stage" analogy--almost as if this girl is the lead actress in a play. This is kind of saying that all the drama surrounds her, or that she likes to cause drama when there isn't any. It's "killing him" to see her on stage, etc. The chorus is just talking about every time he's with her--that he feels like he's being hung, that when he's with her he might as well forget about breathing because she's just going to hang him again anyway. "You'd rather watch me drown, then see your hands get wet. You took the plot from stage to screen, and turned it to an epic scene. So whisper it once, tell me again. C'mon whisper it twice, I cant stand to see my whole life flah before my eyes. When im with you theres no point in breathing. No point in breathing" This part begins by showing how she wouldn't do anything to save the relationship--it might "get her hands wet" as he puts it. Then he brings back the stage analogy--she is starting more drama by bringing it from "stage to screen...epic scene" and he's getting sick of the way she makes things bigger than they are. So, so you run away for no apparent reason, cause you and i are changing with the seasons. Don't give me an answer as to why youre leaving. The tables are full but nobodys been dealing, so fold your hand C'mon and fold your hand This part just shows how she runs away, almost because she enjoys the "drama" of it, or whatever, and he says "Nothing's going on, nobody's dealing, give up" etc. At least that's my take on it :] |

To me this song is about a relationship going sour--most likely because sex has taken over the relationship..."we've been caught in these sheets way too long.." They've gotten to be a kind of awkward couple, and the conversation has run dry so they have to listen to the radio to fill the silence and keep them from discussing the real issues that are going on. |

I think Gibbard is trying to get across that he loves this girl--and he can only show her through interpretations of his love. Such as: bringing her manhattan, having a marching band "sing" her name, etc. But he can't tell her himself, which is shown in the line, "And it is true what you said--that i live like a hermit in my own head." They live in sorrow--but this sorrow is a sort of comfort to them at times, but slowly their love is fading and drowning because they never act on it. I don't know, just my interpretation. |

i think this song is so relatable to anyone and everyone. i personally relate as well. i completely feel like this song is explaining a detached person--they want to FEEL so badly, they want to experience closeness with a person. he likes feeling close to them; just breathing together and feeling that their lives are in sync. but then when she wakes, he knows they have to have conversation, which means he could get hurt. that if he gives too much of himself away, he may never get it back. so he starts to "push everything that's good away" even though all he wants to do is hold her. then he talks about how he's put a shield up around himself--he can bend and not break. he's resilient. he recovers quickly, because he will never give too much of himself away. this song is effing genius. |

the beginning does make sense for all who says it didn't--some of the details though, like the bloody mary and the arduous magazine article, etc are a little pointless, but the whole concept of them crashing into the water and being about to die fits in with the song. most of the song goes on saying things they should do before they die--to not conform and not worry about the future; to just plunge into the "caverns of tomorrow" and not anticipate what's coming next, just to live life for the now. conor's best next to bowl of oranges i'd have to say. |

I definitely agree with "suchprettywords". the song is obviously talking about how ben is sitting there contemplating how people can really truly love each other without condition and how words like "i love you" can get repetitive when they don't mean a thing at all. Suddenly a perfect couple walks in and they simply reek this unconditional love he's speaking about, and it puts everyone in awe. then he goes home to his girlfriend, and he feels it to be more of a mundane and meaningless relationship, hence the excessive alcohol. he says 'finally there is clarity' about the perfect couple, because he realizes that his relationship is not perfect in any way. the two drink the night away because there's nothing much else to do; they don't truly love each other in that unconditional way. |

| I think that the three different parts where he says "I believe that lovers..." show the gradual growing and shaping of a good relationship and of a true type of love. He starts out with them "drowning in their innocence", which shows the first stages of lovers believing that they're meant for each other, that everything will be perfect. People tell them that it's not all great, though, and this is where he says lovers should be "left there to burn in their arrogance", meaning many couples are arrogant and believe they're the be all and the end all of the world, and they WILL last forever. Finally, the realizing point of the relationship becomes imminent, and the two lovers have come to peace with each other and are in true love, able to get past each other's faults and realize that they definitely HAVE THEM. then they are finally left to dream of their happiness. | |

I think this song perfectly captures the feeling of prom night and of seeing that your whole life is completely in front of you, and you have the power to make your own destiny, and "sing like you think no one's listening". "there are moments when i know it and the world revolves around us and we're keeping it keeping it all going this delicate balance vulnerable all knowing" this part shows how teenagers seem to think they know everything about how the world operates...however, the word "vulnerable" shows how it really is--that they are virtually helpless, and only trying to lay out their own path and destiny. |
