Eluveitie – A Rose For Epona Lyrics 12 years ago
From Chrigel Glanzmann:

"The song 'A Rose For Epona' appears about in the middle of the storyline - so, it tells about the time when the gaulish war broke out already. The Helvetians decided to leave their homeland and migrate to the west coast of Gallia, to start a new life there.

In the time the song tells about, many Helvetians had to face pretty much shattered hopes. And so does the protagonist, from whose viewpoint the song is written: A young gaulish woman. She was part of the helvetic migration, but after the battle of Bibracte, all hopes that she and her people would ever reach their new home were torn to pieces.

Furthermore you can imagine: She probably had lost her husband on the battlefields of Bibracte and she had to face fact that she can be glad if their common newborn child would not be killed and she herself would be sold into roman slavery.

To sum it up: Her situation was desperate. In this situation 'our' young gaulish woman despairs, can't accept her fate and turns to her goddess Epona... and accuses her for having forsaken her people. This is what the song expresses.

On a historical note: 'Epona' was a gaulish goddess which was, among other things, in charge of taking care of horsemen and the cavallery. All over Gallia there were Epona temples where people traditionally offered up freshly cut roses or rose petals to their goddess."

Dredg – The Ornament Lyrics 12 years ago
For the record, it wasn't a BS submission. That is all the song used to be and how it is presented on Live at the Fillmore. It kept building over time... which is kind of ironic if you consider that it first appears with "Matroshka" on Catch Without Arms. It is like putting the doll, an ornament, back together. The instrumental led to the stripped down, atmospheric version which gave way to the fleshed-out, "full" version.

You are indeed correct. The song was written about a friend of his that committed suicide. On one of the older pages he had a link to a Suicide Prevention site.

Shawn Colvin – Sunny Came Home Lyrics 14 years ago
You know, I only stumbled upon the whole meaning of this song recently. This song came out when I was probably 11 or 12 so I really didn't think much of it; I knew she won the Grammy for Album of the Year out of nowhere and that was about it. However, I was doing research about censorship in music and that's how I came back to it.

My whole point of this is that I'm surprised no one, at least in looking at the comments, has mentioned the fact that at the end of the song you can hear a match being struck and it igniting something. Apparently the radio version edited this out along with about 20-30 seconds of the instrumental portion that is at the end of the song. So if anyone really doubts that this song can be taken at face value, well, the proof is in the pudding. Which is probably also on fire.

Only Living Witness – December Lyrics 15 years ago
The ending lyrics always made me think the song implied something having to do with the experience of being on stage. You know, that hearing the people cheer has finally given him a sense of "place", some place where he feels he belongs. It took a lot of time and getting weathered down by life, perhaps a necesity to be in the place where he is now. I never could really fit the rest of the song into this theory, though.

Car Bomb – Pieces of You Lyrics 15 years ago
They just really don't like Avril Lavigne. Sure, I could go into the deeper connotations that they are trying to make, but why do that? They just think she is a bitch who should go away. And really I haven't heard anything about her for months so perhaps they already got their wish. Someone should bombard her camp with endless copies of this song so she can write about "h8trs."

The lyrics to this song are so complex I don't even know where I'd begin...

Nile – User-Maat-Re Lyrics 15 years ago
The final verse is probably more of a summary of his reign rather than coming from the perspective of Seti. Ramesses II wanted to be on the of the greatest pharoahs to ever have lived and ordered many monuments to be built in the name of his glory; he believed if he built enough of these monuments, neither he nor his ancestors would ever be forgotten.

For all he did and as powerful as he was, his reign did nothing to secure the future for the Egyptian Empire. Once he died the kingdom was open to attacks from several outsiders as well as subject to internal conflicts. In less than 200 years anything that he had accomplished had essentially been undone.

The meaning is in the song itself - it is about the Manson Family murders. The title comes from the address of Sharon Tate's home where the murders took place - 10050 Cielo Drive.

Eluveitie – Inis Mona Lyrics 16 years ago
Also worth noting, the main melody (the one in the chorus) is from an old seafaring song of the area.

You can see this interview with Chrigel Glanzmann for some further insight on the song, the album, and the band in general: http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/showinterview.php?id=2012

Eluveitie – Inis Mona Lyrics 16 years ago
Inis Mona is the Welsh name for Anglesey, an island off the country's northwest coast. Historically, it has been associated with the druids as one of their most sacred places. Just look at the album art, conjure up some geographic images while listening to the song, and you will probably get something that very much resembles what it actually looks like.

Heaven Shall Burn – Numbing the Pain Lyrics 16 years ago
When you call someone an idiot, make sure your reasoning to support that actually makes sense; what I said reflects the exact same sentiment you expressed.

As far as the religiousity of the band goes, I never claimed there were or were not any religious conotations to their lyrics. I think it is clear that they are very much against organized religion. Does that mean they themselves have no spirituality? Of course not; a lot of their material covers the struggle of holding beliefs in the face of terrible atrocities and the darker side of humanity. The basic point is this: based on everything they've ever said, be it in song or otherwise, I don't they subscribe to the "Jesus died for me" school of thought, which is what the original poster seemed to indicate.

Heaven Shall Burn – Numbing the Pain Lyrics 17 years ago
ChristAlphaOmega, have you even ever listened to another Heaven Shall Burn song? Just go look at the lyrics to Implore the Darken Sky to see HSB's view on God and religion. In fact the lyrics to this song seem to be directed in the same kind of place. Oh, but they have the word Heaven in their name so they must be Jesus freaks... too bad the rest of their name says it shall burn.

The Postman Syndrome – Volume Fact Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a writer's frustration, feeling that nothing he is doing is worthy enough to truly encapture something about which he is passionate. It speaks about the perils of being viewed as brilliant and having to live up to those expectations; a lesser person, someone who does not have that tag can have the same kind of frustration and not have really suffer for it. The quote "Against stupidity the Gods themselves contend in vain" comes from Friedirch Schiller's play "The Maid of Orleans," a romanticized tale of Joan of Arc and the Siege at Orlenas. Considering how young the band was when a lot of these songs were written, I can see them of having to live up to high expectations; the fact that the Schiller quote is used in the song (though the quote is famous, but the context shows true understanding of having to have read the passage) should be evidence of this.

Glass Casket – In Between The Sheets Lyrics 18 years ago
The video for the song would seem to support the blood theory. If you also go by the video, perhaps white canvas = a white face from death. So yeah, if you take a look at the video, you could look at the lyrics being directly interrepted on screen. I think the song probably has some deeper connotatoions about a love itself dying.

Horse the Band – Birdo Lyrics 18 years ago
"This song is about Nathan's Stepfather, and has absolutely nothing to do with the NES character. Infact, none of HORSE the band's songs have anything to do with NES characters."

I don't think that is quite an accurate statement. While this song is supposed to be about Nathan's past, it is told in a manner to parallel the Birdo character; that does have SOMETHING to do with this song, even if it is simply a device to explain something more. Therefore, here is a HORSE song that has something to do with an NES character.

A brilliant song by the way, to take something like that and be able to spin it into a story from one's life. I know a lot of people look at them as a band that is not meant to be taken seriously, probably largely due in part that they don't act like they want to be. To me, however, they come off as mad scientists, appearing to be crazy on the surface (and truth be told really are in how they present themselves), but there is genius at work here.

Jerry Cantrell – Owned Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of the many songs on Degradation Trip about Jerry's experience in the music industry. You become a slave to that record label and before you know it, you really have lost every feeling that made you want to want to be at the top of the industry in the first place. Its a sentiment that has been echoed in songs from other artists for years, as so many have had their careers come to a screeching halt while at the top of it. Ironically enough, Jerry still dealt with this in trying to release this record in the first place. He finally found a label and they wanted to compromise his vision, only releasing the full 2-disc album as Jerry intended it to be based partly on the critical acclaim of the single disc, but even more so on the fact to cash in on Layne's death with AIC in the people's minds. And you will also notice that all those songs that are critical of the music industry and the lifestyle of being a big rock star were not found on the single disc... interesting indeed.

Jerry Cantrell – Siddhartha Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is probably more directly inspired by the Herman Hesse novel of the same name, which in itself is inspired by the life of the historical founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Guatama. The character, who is also named Siddhartha, lives during the time of the Buddha and experiences both extremes of living in his quest to find inner peace - both as a monk listening to the Buddha and then immersed in a life of gambling, greed, and has a sexual relationship with a woman. In essence, what Siddhartha ends up realizing at the end was that he had to go out and seek the answers himself, to experience the pain of life to truly understand it. Jerry's lyrics show him comparing himself with Siddhartha, as he too had been on both sides of life (the dark one being his life of excess and drug use when in AIC). Now that he has been on both sides, he feels like he can attain the same kind of peace that Siddhartha did, its just a matter of him going out to find it now with "Siddhartha on (his) mind".

Jesu – Tired of Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Nothing really too deep here, but the instrumental layering is so nice, the simplicity fits it quite well. Anyway, I'd say that it is someone's (either Broadrick's own or whoever the speaker is of this song) reflection of having absolutely no self worth to the point where you can't even see why anyone cares about you in the first place.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I think this song is about beer, beer, and more beer.
