if you read the Bible, not only Dave, but Jesus also looked God as "The Bartender". At the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed: "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."(Matt 26:42) my interpretation is Dave talking from Judas' point of view. about how he sold his soul (and jesus) for money, the guiltiness he felt and how he wanted to drink the cup, to replace Jesus on the cross as a redemption. but if you listen to the live version. Dave always took the song into a whole different context and interpretation... |

i never trully understand what the real meaning of the lyrics. i think it's somewhat about the optimistic view on life, about how you overcome all the tragedies and bitterness and "run in the rain and play" this song show us how weird and beautiful songwriter dave is. and by the way the last for minute instrumental part is trully a masterpiece... |

one of my fave song... there's a bit of biblical reference on it. especially on the line about "a place none of us has been/a place that has to be believed/ to be seen.." and "you've got that leave it behind..." it comes from Matthews 19:21: Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." and u2istehbest, the intro on Tribute To Hero DVD taken from the song Peace on Earth, one of the track from All That You Can't Leave Behind (the album). If you watch Boston concert DVD, Bono put the lyrics from Wake Up the Dead Man as the intro, gave the song a whole new deeper look... |
