Low – Always Fade Lyrics 17 years ago
Lovely song off the new album. It is an insistent reminder of death, just as the beat annoying rattles on and held vocal notes decay.

Whether beheaded or otherwise, the heart will beat on announcing death. You may change, but you will always die. You should cut free this weighty impending end about violent death ("screams, clutching of breast"). A curt, apologetic "sorry about the mess" sums up the song's pessimism. We all die. Period.

Low – Murderer Lyrics 17 years ago
I see it more as a depressed cynic who is condemning God whilst at the same time hating himself. The narrator is asking to be God's murderer because 1) God is a violent and cruel deity (this resulting from loss no doubt) and 2) The narrator is no better, hating himself and therefore willing to go along with murder and cruelty in God's name. All of this is done with a very sneering, accusing tone. The narrator, probably once religious, has since turned from the divine while also turning on himself. I see this as a reaction to the cruelty of events and coldness of humans. Existence is bleak.

Super Furry Animals – Presidential Suite Lyrics 17 years ago
No comments! Wow!

Anyways this song is a rather traditional pop song musically, but lyrically it is a very unique love ballad. The narrator (male) is saying that his love of this woman (the "we" references them as a couple) is great enough to deserve a presidential suite.

The only interesting thing is the beginning, which references the sex scandal of Monica Lewinsky and U.S. President Bill Clinton. It is a very funny anecdotal reference, and I'm not sure how it fits with the song but I love it nonetheless.

Animal Collective – Peacebone Lyrics 17 years ago
Lyrically I think this song parallels some of "Turn Into Something" in its acid-drenched free associative meanderings. Its such a perfect compliment to the bouncy childlike vibe of this song. I love that manipulated accordion sample used to anchor the song. Tremendous.

It's "well silence is a bore"

Listen better next time :)

Ok, this isn't about lyrics but I love the breakdown which all these squishy (word that springs to mind) vocal parts all layered on top of each other (this is during the "Can I tell you that you are the purple in me" section). AC is great at adding tiny details that stick out after repeated listens

The Dismemberment Plan – Pay For The Piano Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about the inevitable realities of artistic expression.
"Somebody's got to pay for the piano
Somebody's got to make sure we honor everyone
I know if we can forfeit all our sorrow, it may as well be us"

Paying for the piano is symbolic of the realities of artistic creation, no matter how monumental a work of art is, it costs money, resources and requires effort.
The section about "honoring everyone" is a sly comment about artistic political correctness. In an age where art is produced across the globe, thousands of artists go unheard, unseen, or unexperienced. There is a growing desire to "honor" all art that is produced, but it is an impossible goal.

The vocal hook on the chorus of this song reminds me a lot of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Of course I think Nirvana were terribly overrated and I'd listen to "When The Sun Hits" a hundred times before that grunge anthem.

Here's my lyrics for it. These inaccuracies have been bugging me so here we go:

I lost track of all the time
But I'll keep waiting by the phone
Tonight is colder than it was
And I just wanna get you home

You been so drunk you can't go on
And made your way back to the house
I slipped my around your neck
And pulled you over to the ground

I lost track of all the time
But I'll keep waiting by the phone
Tonight is colder is colder than it was
And I just wanna get you home.

Snow Patrol – Hands Open Lyrics 17 years ago
Poor Snow Patrol. You know sometimes big obvious hooks like "Run" helped disguise subpar lyrical content. Usually these kind of cliches get discarded as an artist matures. Unfortunately I think the lyrics might actually be getting worse...

Oh, and I better give me .02 about the Sufjan debate. I love whoever phonetically spelled it as "Soof-yawn." Brilliant, as that is precisely the reaction I get from listening to his nerd-folk. You wanna wikipedia a state history and write faux-emotional songs about it? Maybe the next piece of garbage down the pike will be a Sufjan/Snow Patrol collab. I'll call it "Love You Like The Spring Rain In Alabama, or (WE DEFEND OUR RIGHTS...To Make Crappy Songs In The Noonday Sun Of Your Loving Love!

Animal Collective – Alvin Row Lyrics 17 years ago
As for interpretation:

There's too much lyrical content to reference here, so I'll give you a general idea. I believe it is about a man who has visions of his baby being born. The baby is Alvin Row. He imagines the baby growing up and eventually dying (fading). He wonders if the visions are real.

Now here's the tricky part.. is the baby real? He talks about "baby bleeding" (bloody from birth) followed by the screaming that would definitely relate to birth... or is it mourning? Reaching for the lampshade could signify the father is kept up by visions of his baby dying (bleeding). I can't say which one is correct... but if the baby really is born then the ending is the father finally saying goodbye to his Alvin. Eventually he will "sing Row, dear Alvin" or in other words, he will sing the song "Alvin Row" about it.

Now the section starting with "I remember the day..." is a very hard section to digests because a) the lyrics are very strange and hard to decipher and b) it doesn't seem to fit with the story. Perhaps the father is remembering his own childhood (chocolate shakes, ice cream man's bell). The rest is too cryptic for me, not to mention I could have the lyrics all wrong. Either way I think I should at least give my impression. Maybe a better understanding will be presented later.

Animal Collective – Alvin Row Lyrics 17 years ago
It was bothering me that this song, one of my all time favorite AC songs, was not on the lyrics list.

I understand there are a bunch of holes and a lot of the lyrics are just what I'm hearing from repeated listens on high volume (and perhaps an active imagination).

If anyone has more insight into the lyrical content, let me know and I'll correct.

Thanks!

Fiction Plane – If Only Lyrics 17 years ago
It's not deep. The refrain you mention is a simple child-like fable narrative (I'm not sure if Sachar wrote that himself or if it has an actual folk background but whatever).

If the bark of the trees was as soft as the skies, then the woodpecker wouldn't have to work so hard to get his food (he can easily fly through the sky whereas the bark on the trees is hard). Similarly, the wolf on the ground wishes for that same "soft bark" because then the woodpecker would slip down for him to eat. The theme is ridiculously simple: the desire for an easier life always has a tragic end. The degree to which something is hard to accomplish (like in the novel when the protagonist has to journey through the waste land) makes it worthwhile and productive.

The song reflects a circular infinitude. You notice the progression of the narrative spirals into infinity:

The needle, the dirty spoon, the flames and the fumes
Just throw them out tonight

Rejection of heroin use.

The time that you’ve been afforded

Unbridled love and light

Essentially this is saying that life takes bad turns and there are things that we cannot understand, but yet there are positive aspects to life.

Cannibal Corpse – I Cum Blood Lyrics 18 years ago
Does it matter what the lyrics are? I can't make out anything on the recording. I think I heard that they were experimenting with reversed garbage disposal found sound in this period "The Cum Blood Period" as it is known to the CC fans.

What really baffles me is the fact that the song structure is actually based off Non-Euclidean Geometric theories. The pounding drums represent the destruction of straight lines. The curvature of the universe extended as if the radius were of infinite length, thus the sphere becomes a flat plane. But what happens when you reach the starting point? Can you? If you were to travel infinite distance then you would suddenly arrive at the point you started from, in effect creating a "tesseract" if you will, or more conventionally known as a worm hole. The way to achieve such an effect is to cum blood. That is what CC is discussing here.

Sonic Youth – Candle Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually the term cocker means "buddy" or "friend." It's a pretty old term but using it in that sense would still support the drugs subtext. He is the "friend" of the "rock" (meth).

However, I disagree that the song is just a pure drug reference. A candle is representative of mortal beauty. They possess an entrancing glow but they must burn out eventually. Thurston sees his life as reflected in this candle. It's a feel good song in the end..."it's alright Candle / Tonight's the day Candle / The wind's away Candle" Wind, in this sense, represents that omnipresent force of impending death. But it is gone for this one night.

James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, LooseTongue, I figured certain statements are almost self-evidently true, but let me try to get this across to you.

No, I do not have a catalogue of every rhyme written. Yes I did say that these rhymes are cliche...and you obviously disagree so let me educate you:

Example 1)
I saw your face
In a crowded place
And I don't know what to do
Cause I'll never be with you

The last two lines here are cringeworthy. Communicating a sense of pointlessness, a lack of direction, this is commendable. But doing it using such bland monosyllables ends up sounding boring. I have no way to do a global search for the lyrics "I'll never be with you" but I am certain it appears frequently.

Example 2)
And I don't think
That I'll see her again
But we shared a moment
That will last till the end

Here's another example of a failed attempt at poetics. What exactly is Mr. Blunt trying to say here? That there is a small moment in time in which he perceives himself as being with this fantasy woman, and though that moment passes there is an element of it which lasts. That is certainly a common perspective, however, he fails to relate that experience with interesting language. He is blandly stating the situation without elaborating on the meaning.

What I'm trying to get at here is that language is a very powerful tool. It can convey complex emotions and ideas in new ways simply by altering the delivery. Is it a coincidence that the best poetry contains very little common rhymes? That the sentiment acheived is often touching, yet never immediately obvious? James Blunt will never acheive such esoteric highs.

Sonic Youth – Teenage Riot Lyrics 18 years ago
The wait is over. All the dumbshits can go crawl back into their stinkholes because it is time to actually DISECT and INTERPRET this song FOR REAL. Wow, who would've thought a place called songmeanings was really an emo debate forum or a collection of asspats saying "SNONIC YUOTH we LUV Yoooo!!!!"

Here we go:

[Opening Kim Section]
This is a very mocking, sarcastic way to open a record and I love it. "You're it" is delivered in a sarcastic tone in order to poke fun at people who rate music or art, who think that certain styles are "it" are the most essential of the moment. SY is arguing that such evaluations are meaningless. The spirit desire repeated is much more serious however. It evokes a sense of lost spiritual values in America, a loss of desire for spiritual (this doesn't have to be organized religion) rehabilitation or enrichment.

[Thurston's section]
This is a VERY long section with a ton of depth that I really cannot get into because of space and time constraints. However, to help in decoding individual pieces let me give you my opinion of the big picture. The song is called "Teen Age Riot" for a good reason: it is about the desire for rebellion, for free thinking, for excess in the lives of teenagers in the late 80s. Drugs (free-speed nation) lack of attention span (hypernation, an interesting play on hybernation) and a growing tension between the rebels and the establishment (stormy weather). Obviously the Youth identify with this rebellious subculture, they need a "cord and a peddle" in order to express there own version of rebellion: through music. Their music itself is like a riot, which is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. So, in summary, Thurston's section is like a mission statement: we are Sonic Youth, we are the new generation of rebellious individuals who are embracing chaos (bound too loose).

Ok I know that is a bit of reading, but I think this song deserves a bit more thorough evaluation. Hope that helps others to decode this great song.

P.S.: I don't want to get into this debate but here's some info, Rites of Spring is considered the father of "emo" which is loosely defined as a hardcore punk musician ship melded with more introspective, emotional lyrics as opposed to the anti-establishment free thinking of punk's lyrics. Now this term is applied to nearly every teary-eyed emotional band on the planet. Labels have very little weight, so don't rely on them.

The recent trend of the mainstream music machine seems to be the "wide-eyed, emotional, acoustic boy-rocker." Tyler Hilton, John Mayer, and now this pathetic tag-along, James Blunt.

His last name says it all: this man cannot articulate himself subtly or artistically. This song is full of so many trite cliches I can barely read through the first two verses beforing vomiting on my computer keyboard.

Look people, I know this is hard to understand but lemme say it again: taking words that have been paired together for fucking CENTURIES is not poetic, it is bland and emotionless.

This is simple music for simpletons. It contains Idiotic rhymes for people who can't move past 4th grade vocabulary. Thematically, lyrically, and musically this song is an affront to all creative, and unfortunately unknown musicians the world over.

Wayne Coyne is not a gifted lyricist, this is pretty widely accepted. However, he is quite good at making up ridiculously rilly words to go along with the crazy blips, bloops, synths and other studio wankery that ultimately crop up in every Lips song. Yes this is a concept album, yes it is about robots, and no there is no deeper meaning.

Remember, anyone can reasonably argue about potential meanings in a song because language itself is so multi-faceted and insecure in demonstrating meaning.
