Morrissey – Heir Apparent Lyrics
|
Suprised this song doesn't have any comments. I'm actually not very clear on the meaning. Some of it seems quite self-explanatory, but other bits don't. Who is the heir? Heir of what? A shyness that is criminally vulgar? I suppose essentially it's about someone, the heir, who is quite naive and is just beginning to realize what a terrible place the world is. |

Morrissey – I Just Want to See the Boy Happy Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
It reminds me of He Know's I'd Love To See Him. It's pretty much the same idea.. well, him wanting to see some boy happy. Lately I've been quite taken with the idea that Morrissey's lyrics about other people are actually just slightly-altered observations, hopes, and dreams, about himself... so I suppose I agree with rjdfw |

Morrissey – Ambitious Outsiders Lyrics
|
It's interesting the way he describes it, especially the line "We're on your street, but
You don't see us/Or, if you do/You smile and say Hello" Like they make all this fuss of being afraid of gays molesting their children, hearing and seeing signs that "they're moving in closer every day!", but really the people they're making out to be terrible monsters are the perfectly normal, kind neighbours they smile at and greet every day on the street, and it's really very ridiculous. Morrissey also makes it spiteful and sarcastic, like they've finally given up fighting it, the hate, and trying to convince them: Whatever, it's your own fault for having children! |

Morrissey – Maladjusted Lyrics
|
I'm pretty sure the Maladjusted person is Morrissey himself, considering all of the third-person lines that hint at the Moz archetype. Including the bit about the low-cut blouse, stifling a Friday night, etc. "There's nothing wrong with you" is pretty much self-reassurance.. and denial. But whatever, that's just perspective. The same meaning.
I think this is one of.. well, the good track from Maladjusted. And Ambitious Outsiders is interesting.. Though I won't go so far as to attempt to praise the album in it's entirety, it's really just that it doesnt live up to Moz standards, specifically. |

I really like how on the sleeve art for Ringleader it had, not-so-subtly, a photo of Morrissey standing beside a wall graffitied with "SMASH BUSH!"

The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow Lyrics
|
I agree with the idea that Sheila is the female version of Morrissey, who is delicate and afraid. She first laments in typical Moz fashion "Is it wrong to want to live on your own? Is it wrong not to always be glad?" then, he eggs him(her)self on to "Come out and find the one that you love and who loves you!" Almost like, by seperating himself from him(her)self, he is able to say, go out and have some fun or you'll end up just like me! Let's stride off hand in hand and find someone to love, who will love us too! And of course, typical Moz having fun with sexual ambiguity, I'm a girl, you're a boy, I'm a boy, you're a girl, la la la la.... |

Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics
|
I agree, it always comes as a shock when someone tries to interprets Mozzer's lyrics to be about him and a woman! Really, some people are quite slow. Anyway, in this song I think he is partly being smart and trying to frustrate us with clues, and make us look up italian peoples names to try and figure out the lyrics, and make us speculate further about his love life. I think it is pretty obviously about heartbreak, and very slightly more subtley trying to convey the idea of Moz with a man, complete with a mentioning of his supposed celibacy.
I never really liked the song that much until I focused on the lyrics - the references to Italian culture are quite clever. He sure is smitten with Rome!! |

Morrissey – Dear God, Please Help Me Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Well. I can't beleieve people still think Moz is at all straight. But ANYWAY.. this song is beautiful, the church organs really get me. It may not be purely autobiograophical; though, you can't deny that every song he writes has some truth about himself.. didn't he say that once himself? |

Morrissey – Late Night, Maudlin Street Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
This song is beautiful. I think it is about Morrissey's adolescence.. not literally, but perhaps somewhat metaphorically, like tabtom1 said. I also don't believe it could be about a girl. I mean, it actually says "he" drove me home. The lyrics are very confusing though. Is he talking about the same person throughout? Maybe one person who sums up his adolescence.. but could be really more than one person? It is definately about teenage years anyway, which as davidbeauy says is the essence of The Smiths. It is the things like love (the picture beside the bed), despise of the body (the world's ugliest boy), and sex (you without clothes), that he seems to believe symbolize his awkward adolescence.. |

The Smiths – Rubber Ring Lyrics

Yes this song is Moz speaking to his fans.. saying that though you might think you have "outgrown" his music and the sadness people sometimes associate it with it, he wants you to remember him and the songs that were there when you needed them the most.
And, of course, I will never ever grow tired of Morrissey. I can't see how anyone ever could. |

Morrissey – America Is Not The World Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
also.. since I dont see that it has been mentioned yet.. about the Estonia bit Moz says:
"I imagined the sexy and sharp people of Estonia - which is not considered to be a world leader in anything, as far as I know - looking at the Burger King fast-food hell of the modern American food industry, and actually feeling sorry for Americans.
America is frightening when it comes to food. Top priority advertising is given to anything at all that basically endangers people - from flesh "food" to heavy sugar to heavy salt. Gelatin is thrown into everything in America - and for what? Whereas, any foodstuffs that would help people - organic or vegetarian - are deliberately hard to find. The American Meat Industry constantly fights against food safety laws, and the Bush Administration routinely repeals food safety legislation. Half a million Americans have been contaminated by E. Coli, hundreds of children have died because contaminated meat is given to schools, and the country leads the way in obesity, kidney failure, and disabilities caused by bad diet. However, turn on American television any moment of the day, and you are sandblasted with commercials for ground beef and Yum-Yums. It's astonishing that the entire population of America hasn't been killed off by its own food industry - the food industry is certainly trying, and it is more of a threat to the American people than so-called "terrorism" is.
Am I bleating on? ..."
A very interesting idea, I think. And true. It would be quite ironic for the American population to perish as a result of their gluttony. Though quite clearly that is the fate the entire population of the world is doomed for if we don't act quickly.... sigh. Either through global warming or processed food, it's going to catch up with us one of these days....... |

Morrissey – America Is Not The World Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I adore this song. He states and criticizes America's many faults, but also offers them his love.. like I love you, I really do, I just wish you would change your ways. And everything he says is absolutely (and sadly) true. I particularly like "America, you know where you can shove that hamburger.." Hamburger is the anti-Moz!!! I already have a predisposition to take the anti-American side, it seems. I really don't like what I think of when I think of America... hate, gluttony, war, and greed. Stereotypes that they brought upon themselves. Still, if people like the wonderful Morrissey keep voicing their disapproval, things can change. It seems he's given up on America for the time being though, he seems to have a thing for Rome now.. and he still disapproves of us Canadians for our seal hunting.
Needless to say, I've written to my local New Democratic MP about it... |

Morrissey – The Ordinary Boys Lyrics
|
This song is simply about the people it describes.. people who settle for being perfectly average, never straying far from their home town, with ordinary style and an ordinary life. It is something that has confused me too, but some people really seem happy to take the life that is laid out for them by their parents, society, their peers, etc and never really attempt to make anything of it. Just settling for being ordinary.. though he also seems to hint that really they might envy this person who is different, or at least attempt to conform him/her.. |

The Smiths – I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Lyrics

Moz makes the best noises EVER in this song. The growls.. uuuhhhhhrrrhhh! Thats what- tradition means! and the sort of intake of breath on ".....fair enough!"
Anyway. I am positive Morrissey is gay. Whatever he says and anyone else says, theres still no denying it in the lyrics! So, when I first heard this song, I thought it seemed to be about a gay guy *cough* Moz *cough* coming onto a straight guy, going much too far, and then regretting it when he suffers from it. |

The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics

Very nice song, I just got The Smiths today and its one of my favorites from it. Its is about a guy who is gay, and a girl is coming onto him, and he is nervous not knowing what to do.. then he sees that she so easily gives up and finds another guy, and it finally is confirmation to him that he doesnt like girls. I also like how if you listen you will hear "Hand In Glove.. sun shines out of our behinds" at the end, which ties it neatly into Hand In Glove, another song about homosexuality. (perhaps it is a prequel). And I love OneTwo's un-definition on Morrissey's sexuality. I believe that he is gay, but has issues with sex, and also doesnt want to be limited by definition or the pressure that defining his sexuality would result in (to have sex, get involved with someone, etc etc etc) which is all quite obvious from his lyrics. |

The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I absolutely love this song. More than any song it makes me wish to be in love with someone. To me it is about a guy, and someone he loves (leaning towards another guy because of the lyrics, the feel of the song, and Moz himself..) and he depends on this person as an escape to get away from problems at home and his problems in general. Maybe by this person's side is the only place he feels at home. He loves this person and would be happy to die by their side. Thinking of this though, I imagine how horrible it would be to lose the person.. which makes it somewhat ironic, because he would most likely contemplate suicide as a result. Sigh. |

But it's pretty great. Wwhen I read the lyrics, makes me think of everything that's obviously wrong with our society, summed up, in a very funny satirical way. I agree with dleggett, I've been listening to the song trying to get the lyrics. but about the my/your bit, it definately sounds like 'your' in the song at least, in some parts it sounds like he's saying "I see the whites of your eyes and I'm a stuntman" so that makes me think that's what it is.. also someplace I read "cause he's on his knees in fear' instead of he's arming me for fear.. which I think sounds better but I have no idea which is right hahah.
very awesome song anyway, I love it. really intense & dancy.. |

its funny when I first heard the song I though tabs as in guitar tabs, but then looking at the lyrics I decided tabs as in acid, cuz I mean, 'dropping' these tabs? it could be a play on words as well I guess.. but no doubt the song is about drugs.
Is my favorite off of empire because it really sounds alot more like kasabian's first album than the rest. |

my mom is always trying to get me to try to pick away from the lyrics of this song. Its a really cool tune, the kind that gets stuck in your head for hours.. anyway I agreed with her theory that it is about drugs, now I think its more the reckless lifestyle in general, ever since he was young he admired people that lived fearless, recklessly, without caution - except now he realizes theres a dangerous side to it too
"And now that you are having the time of your life
Well think twice
That’s my only advice" |
