Toad the Wet Sprocket – Walk On The Ocean Lyrics
| 3 years ago
|
This may sound kind of unusual, but I always thought this song was about 2 people having a one-night stand, maybe while one of them was on vacation, and how one of them thought it would be fulfilling, and would lead to a relationship, but they ended up somewhat disappointed because the other person wanted nothing more than a roll in the hay. There's a number of references which could be interpreted as sexual innuendos, like the ocean ("motion of").. Flesh becoming water would be the romantic notion of two bodies becoming one, and the following line is the other person taking the physical act for what it is. Afterwards, when they're getting dressed, the romantic is saying how they'll keep in touch, while the other has already emotionally checked out. Later on, the romantic thinks back wistfully on what happened and what could have been, while being disappointed with their everyday life, so this one hookup of theirs seems to grow brighter and more beautiful in their memories. |

The Human League – Don't You Want Me Lyrics
| 9 years ago

I don't get the "creepy" vibe that others have gotten off this, but rather more of a "desperate" vibe (as in despair, not clinging). I see it as, the guy did everything he could to build her up, and help her to be a better version of herself than the one he initially met, because he saw the potential in her. And when she awoke to this potential in herself, she thought that she wouldn't need him anymore, that she's outgrown him. He's in despair, because he's just as in love with her as he's ever been, and so he throws out this obviously idle threat about knocking her back down to where she was, hoping she'll realize that he can still help her. But she's obstinate and has grown to be full-of-herself, and stubbornly refuses to hear him out, into what will likely be a Pyrrhic victory. At which point, all he could hope for is that she encounters this same cold realization, and wakes up and comes back to him.
You might be able to infer that I can relate. |

Pharrell Williams – Happy Lyrics

This is the most god-awful annoying song I've ever heard. It's even worse than the majority of Rolling Stones songs. I'm subjected to this song about 3 times a day through the radio at work, and now when I hear it come on, I've taken to turning the volume all the way down. And that there, becomes a minute or two of peace. I look forward to the day that it's no longer played on the radio. |

Chameleon Circuit – The Sound of Drums Lyrics

The 4 knocks which signaled the end of the Tenth Doctor's run were, in fact, the knocks on the glass door by Wilf, but it was hinted the entire time that the 4 knocks related to the drumming in The Master's head, and therefore that The Master would be the cause of The Doctor's death or regeneration. |

Wet Wet Wet – Love Is All Around Lyrics

I don't know how long ago, but it was probably around the time that the movie Four Weddings And A Funeral came out, but I decided long ago that this was going to be my wedding song. It's got a great mix of a little bit of everything in it.. A country-ish opening, a good rock backbone, and tender ballad lyrics. I count myself lucky that I didn't have to compromise, as my fiancée agreed to use it for our wedding song. |

Air Supply – Making Love Out Of Nothing At All Lyrics
| 11 years ago
|
I used to think the song was a sort of lamentation on the loss of love between the two of them.. As in, she's cheated on him, but he still can't bring himself to break up with her. She goes around having sex (aka "making love") with other guys, whom she doesn't care about at all ("out of nothing at all"). He explains how deeply and strongly he loves and needs her, trying to get her to come back and be true to him alone. |

I haven't really seen any of the First Doctor, but it's not altogether too difficult to believe that they're all the same person. We humans can sort of do the same thing.. When we move somewhere new, when we start a new school or a new job, when we make new friends.. We can decide to be someone new, someone different than we were before. We can change our clothes, our mannerisms.. Thanks to plastic surgery, we can change our faces.. And while we would still be the same person, the memories of who we were before could seem like a whole other lifetime. |

Chameleon Circuit – The Sound of Drums Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
Obviously taken from the perspective of The Master at the season 3 finale, Utopia/The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords (with a little foreshadowing to The End Of Time), and The Doctor's reaction, and desire to not be alone, even if it's with his greatest adversary.
Personally, I get more out of the lines "Last of the Time Lords once again" and "No, please! You've got to, please! We're the only ones left!" than when he screams for The Master to "Regenerate!". The Master's spiteful decision and The Doctor's initial understanding of being truly alone forever.
The truly ironic part of this song is how the beat of it, the drum beat, really gets into your head, and you can't shake it. |

The Beatles – You're Going to Lose That Girl Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
On the surface, this might seem to be a song about a guy stealing another man's girlfriend/wife, but the more important subtext is that he's also trying to play Relationship Counselor, and he's giving the other guy another chance. He's warning the guy that if he doesn't change the way he treats his girl, that she'll *want* to leave him, and the main guy will just happen to be there to replace him, because he knows how to treat a woman properly. He simply wants the girl to be happy, but he doesn't want to ruin her current relationship, he wants it to have at least one more real try. This song isn't about stealing, it's about second chances. |

Florence + the Machine – Kiss with a Fist Lyrics

Technically, I agree with you, afbound, that it's not quite so clear that it's *not* about domestic violence. In fact the only lines in the song that hint to that would be "your slaps don't stick / your kicks don't hit / so we remain the same" which is ambiguous at best. However, taking into account the tone of the song, one (such as myself) might get the impression that it's not to be taken literally, as supported by an interview with the writer.
My introduction to this song was from the radio, and the DJ announced that he'd spent the last several weeks trying to find a way to have sex with this song, because he loves it so much. That prelude was enough for me see the lyrics as sarcastic or metaphorical.
afbound, the point of this website is to try to see songs from other people's perspectives, or at least give everyone an equal launchpad to proclaim theirs. I may not agree with what you say (because I think the intended meaning is clear enough given the tone), but I respect your right to say it, and the fact that you did. |

Herman's Hermits – No Milk Today Lyrics
|
My favorite line is "Just two up two down"
I don't think the narrator is the milkman, or is in love with milk.. He was having a thing with a girl, and he really liked her, and came calling one day to see the sign of 2 milk bottles right-side-up, and 2 more upside-down, which is a message to the milkman not to deliver there anymore. The narrator is confused, and doesn't know why she would leave without a word. He asks her neighbors ("people passing by don't know the reason why"), but no one around seems to know why she left, either. The house becomes as a shrine to him, something to worship in his nostalgia.
It's about being abandoned with no reason, and the smallest sign of it (such as the milk bottles) can be the most hurtful reminder. |

I interpreted this song as being a guy's position in a fight/conversation with a girl about her using lust as a substitute for love. He's saying that she engages in emotionally self-destructive random sex, and he doesn't know why he puts himself through caring, when he's not going to be able to change her mind about it. |

Primitive Radio Gods – Ghost of a Chance Lyrics

I think this song is about a one-night-stand where the guy is kind of regretting the fact that the "relationship" was brought to a physical level too fast, and he believes that there's no chance for real romance, only the "hook-up." But since he's there, he'll try to make it last as long as possible, and enjoy the limited time he does have. |

The All-American Rejects – It Ends Tonight Lyrics
| 17 years ago

I like the relationship angle. Everyone has one where you try so hard to stay together, but nothing seems to work. Eventually, there comes a point where you know you've done all you could, and the only thing left is to walk away. Usually the other person doesn't want to hear it, so sometimes you have to scream it, or keep telling them "It's over!" before they finally start to get it.
btw, I interpret the line "I can't explain what you can't explain" to mean essentially that "if you don't know what I'm talking about by now, then you're proving my point that there's nothing left to do." |

I've recently gotten addicted to this song, and didn't know the lyrics till now.. After reading them, it means more to me.
This guy had a friendship with this girl, they got along great, and then at some point, one of them wanted to "take it to the next level" and start dating.. They do. She regrets it, and wants things to go back to their great friendship, and he realizes that it can't, but she still dreams that it's possible anyway. |

The Cure – Friday I'm in Love Lyrics

My take on this song is that, the guy and girl do whatever during the week, but once Friday comes, they both choose to *ACT* like they're in love. If only for the fact of making yourself believe it, it's still a relief from the rest of the week, which will doubtlessly be drab. Like, a happy lie, being better than the miserable truth.
As for the last stanza, I believe it's purely sexual in nature, but tries to pass it off as if it's said lovingly. |

Before I looked at the lyrics, I didn't listen too closely to the verses, and thought the song might be about a cell phone call to a lover, and hoping that it doesn't cut out.
I now think that it's about getting out of an abusive relationship, and looking back, thinking that you've had really bad luck in love, and hoping that either someone actually good will come along, or that you'll be able to get by on your own. And I have a bad feeling that the "two-way radio" is a 911 call. |

Straylight Run – Your Name Here (Sunrise Highway) Lyrics

You know, there's another take on this song, than the making-up point of view...
** The one guy is challenging the other to a fight. **
Look at it this way:
"It’s all the same to me. Well not really"
He's acting like everything's rolling off his back, but in reality, what the other guy does, gets to him, and upsets him.
"it’s nothing so simple, nothin' so silly"
Whatever happened may have seemed like a minor thing to outsiders, but there was a lot more to it than what everyone else saw.
"I’ll be outside waiting for you"
Okay, he gives directions (Avenue is ONLY to fit the song. There's no way a LIer could say Carman's Avenue after having lived around it for so long), but then comes the challenge.. They're on the phone at the time or something, but the one guy is challenging the other to come over and settle this, once and for all.
"I guess you'd bet that I’d collapse before you do"
As if he's saying "You thought I'd give up, say I'm sorry, and come crawling back? No way! YOU say you're sorry, I'm not giving in!"
With how the song sounds, all light and airy and all, I guess it's pretty common for it to be about a make-up, or friends... But when you examine the lyrics, it paints a different picture. My guess, then, is that the music was kept light, to make the pain and anger more subtle. |

Anna Nalick – Breathe (2 A.M.) Lyrics

This song, when I get into it and actually listen, just about drives me to tears. It seems to capture the essence of life in general, the fact that you can't turn back, all you can do is find some way to comfort yourself, and try your best to move on ahead. There's no turning back that "hourglass"
Everyone seems to like the Bridge the best, with the tunnel.. but personally, I much prefer the entire last verse, particularly the two lines "these words are my diary screamin' out aloud / And I know that you'll use them however you want to." She's making a commentary, on the fact that we (as listeners) will be making a commentary on her commentary. :-D
This song (for now, anyway) is my "plastic bag in the wind". ;-) |
