Buffalo Tom – Larry Lyrics 16 years ago
No posts? Great song!

Belly (US) – Sweet Ride Lyrics 16 years ago
I like the line "Smiling too loud" - It felt so good, she was obviously sooo proud of herself, presumably for having sex (first time? Or after getting married and stopping her sleeping around - "vow made it new")? But she obviously thinks getting married or getting involved with this person may not be the best idea, since she's asking him(?) to follow her "down."

Belly (US) – Dusted Lyrics 16 years ago
Not sure what the reference to dust is. Cocaine? Angel Dust (PCP)? Or the dust of the sandman? To me, I thought it was about someone hooked on drugs and depressed. There's no hope of helping her. Or maybe "she" is the drugs... Don't get involved with her. She's a waste of time... Leave her.

ABBA – Does Your Mother Know Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite ABBA song too. Does Swedish law prohibit relations between +18 and under-18 year olds, like in the USA? "You seem pretty young to be searching for that kind of fun"

ABBA – Knowing Me, Knowing You Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a really sad song, yes. One of the saddest by mostly bubblegum ABBA. More than just a simple relationship, it must have been a marriage (or a very serious relationship). They lived together. They're singing about the empty house where children "would play" - thus a family was in the plans. Now it's all gone.

Cracker – Been Around The World Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my favorite Cracker song - nice mellow song with introspective lyrics. As a rock star you get to see the world. But your world doesn't come with you. Drink (bottles in the canals) and strange women (the stranger with your face he followed) are substitutes, but they don't quite compare. I'm not sure if he thinks being around the world (i.e., being a rock star) is a good trade-off or not. What do you think?

Nerf Herder – Mr. Spock Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is GREAT! At the same time being completely ridiculous (like most Nerf Herder) and cracking me up, the music really rocks, and under it all there's a neat story most can relate to - feeling like you're not good enough for someone, like you would have to be non-human Mr. Spock to be good enough. BTW, the "man lizard" episode (where Captain Kirk visits a planet and fights a human lizard thing, and has to reinvent gun powder to save the ship), is the pinnacle of Star Trek inanity. Where did they come up with that stuff - maybe the same place Nerf Herder comes up with lyrics for their songs!

Silversun Pickups – Three Seed Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite song on the album. I thought it was about drug use intially. However, I really like the interpretation of this as being about an abortion (or perhaps multiple abortions, since the rush was found again). Not much afterthought about the abortion on the day it was executed - matter of fact. In this sense, the line and "the things" he doesn't believe in, reflects his struggle with religion to help him deal with the pain. However, those things didn't seem to help. That interpetation really makes me think again about the meaning of this song.

Warren Zevon – Lawyers, Guns, And Money Lyrics 17 years ago
Lawyers, guns, and money... What else do you need in American society? (Maybe sex, but that's what the waitress that he went home with is all about). I think this song boils down American society to all that is deemed to be important, at least by 90% of the morons that comprise it. As long as you have those 3 things, do whatever you want! You deserve it, it's your birth right, you're American damnit. The hell with the rest of 'em.

Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics 17 years ago
Herion, no question. Anyone who disagrees knows nothing about dope (and should educate themselves).

Elliott Smith – Strung Out Again Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh man... Heroin is the death of me, destructive yet sooo seductive. Anyone who has been strung out can relate to this one. We know how it will end, yes indeed, strung out yet again. You can stop but you can't kick. Sooner or later it'll get you. But man it feels good...

The National – Mr. November Lyrics 17 years ago
He used to be admired by others back in high school - a football star likely, a "great white hope" carried in the arms of cheerleaders, with blue blood - a real 'Merican boy. Now he's a nobody, a loser. He dreams, sleeps too late, and is terrified of the world. But he has something to do. Something that other people are counting on him for. Trying to convince himself he can do it, He sais he won't fuck it up because he's "Mr. November," godamnit, and don't you forget it... But really he's gunna fuck it up because he's a loser now.

Cracker – Don't Bring Us Down Lyrics 17 years ago
Is there a disproportionate number of despondent losers in Florida? If so, I know a few more I'd like to send down there too so they can commiserate!

Social Distortion – Reach for the Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
Don't f*ck around because life will always kick you in the ass when you least expect it. Your past always stays with you, even when you think your shit turns around...

The Paddingtons – Some Old Girl Lyrics 18 years ago
Love the song and the band. The whole album is great and this song especialy rocks. Music rocks like good punk from the 80's. Is the old girl a prostitute or just a groupy?

submissions
Herman Brood – Saturday Night Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a neat song musically, but not very deep lyrically. Sounds like he's a hoodlum with nothing better to do than hang out in front of a bar/strip joint/coffee shop and beat up people who walk by. In real life Herman Brood was a junkie. He committed suicide in 2001.

The Wrens – This Boy Is Exhausted Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a really great song! My favorite Wrens song. Even though we're not all rockstars, I think most of us can relate. Sometimes it just doesn't seem like it's worth it anymore and nobody cares about what you do anyway. Life can be exhausting sometimes.

Youth Brigade – Reason Why Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite Youth Brigade song. Awesome lyrics, it makes a statement I've not heard in other rock music. F**k the NRA. Charleton Heston - what a joke. If you want to hunt a deer, use a bow and arrow. That's real hunting anyway. As Youth Brigade state, we're so desensitized to firearm violence we can't even think critically about the role of guns in our society.

Rod Stewart – Stay With Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I like "I don't mean to sound degrading, but with a face like that you got nothing to laugh about." Stewart used to write more rocking songs like this early on in his career with Faces and at first when he was solo. Now he sucks.

Rod Stewart – The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II) Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of those classics by Stewart that withstand the decades and are still relevant and great to listen to. It's a little slow, but the lyrics comprise a great story. This song is MUCH better than the drivel he writes and sings about nowadays.

Rod Stewart – Every Picture Tells A Story Lyrics 18 years ago
Absolutely. This music is leaps and bounds above his later stuff (post 1980s). This is a great song with pretty good lyrics too. He used to rock like this in most of his songs (with Faces). Now he's trying to cash in on sappy "I love you" songs, just like Bryan Adams who also sucks now.

Rod Stewart – Never Give Up On A Dream Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is such drivel compared to his earlier work.

Rod Stewart – Infatuation Lyrics 18 years ago
The video for this song about sums it up. A peeping tom is infatuated with a faceless woman.

Cyndi Lauper – Money Changes Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree - I think it's a great song. But do you think she's being serious - or is she being overly negative to prove a point and make a statement?

The Constantines – Insectivora Lyrics 18 years ago
A rather dark song. Has he holed himself up within himself, not interacting with others, but coping with life by finding inspiration in things that others normally wouldn't? Or are the earthworms and houseflies metaphors for the drugs he takes to cope with reality and the chaos life brings (or cruelty)? Anyone else have ideas? Definitely a cool song to listen to.

submissions
The Constantines – Shine A Light Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite song off the album (along with Insectivora). He obviously feels inspired by this person who shines a light on him. However, this person is obviously complex, perhaps having committed a crime that some would interpret as heinous and others as justified. Maybe it's a woman who is a prostitute? Or a woman who kills her husband when she finds him in bed with another woman? Not sure about the line about the man sleeping naked with a fire under his feet though. Any ideas?

The Gap Band – Burn Rubber (Why you want to hurt me) Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a great "funk/disco" song from the 70s. I don't think the lyrics are too complicated, but he can't believe his girlfriend bailed out on their relationship without even talking to him. I wonder why he was so surprised. Was he that high on himself?

The Kinks – Plastic Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Around the time the song was being written, plastics were becoming more and more popular as cheap substitutes for all kinds of traditional products. Plastic was the new faux material, like pleather and most of the things Wal Mart, K-Mart and other big box stores sell. Cheap junk. Plastic people don't think they just follow the lead of others and buy stupid junk because they feel like they have to not because they really need it. Davies is making fun of people like that, perhaps in an attempt to get people to wake up and change their habits. Doesn't seem to have worked... There are more of these bozos around today than in the 60s it seems.

The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 18 years ago
I always felt that the film "The Crying Game" (1992) ripped off this song for the theme to the movie.

The Kinks – Around The Dial Lyrics 18 years ago
The Kinks were writing lots of nostalgia songs for the "good old days" around this time (e.g., Come Dancing off their subsequent album). This is another one.

The Kinks – Come Dancing Lyrics 18 years ago
A great song about nostalgia for the "good old days." Course, the present that I lament, will be the next generation's "good old days" in 10 years.

Doves – Almost Forgot Myself Lyrics 18 years ago
I like the little "ding" cymbal noise in the song. It sounds like a timer went off - like a timer on a stove. To me it means "ding" - he's fully "baked" (i.e. stoned) and feeling good. The lyrics read like he hasn't been stoned in a long time because he quit some time ago, but just fell off the wagon and got stoned again. However, he sounds unsure that this was the right thing to do.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – The Hardest Walk Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree, this song is great. I can't figure out if she broke up with him (as indicated in the first stanza with "words and touch just struck me numb") or he with her (as implied when he says "Don't want you to want me"). Any way it's cool.

Ice Cube – The Nigga You Love To Hate Lyrics 18 years ago
He used to have interesting commentary about American society (although I think he can be hypocritical with his racist comments about Asians and such). This song is a great example. Too bad he sold out and Hollywood turned him into a joke. Those "Friday" movies were pieces of crap.

Golden Earring – Another 45 Miles Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my favorite Golden Earring song. Being on the road in a rock band sucks (this is a topic in many rock songs, so the song is not too original this way). Lots of drugs, partying, women, etc. But I think that gets old. He just wants to get back to his wife and son to spend more time with them. Anyone with young children and a demanding job that takes you away from home can probably relate.

submissions
Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics 18 years ago
I like the lines about how the last king of hollywood smashes his drink and orders another, and he needs to get out because he's been there before. This song has some great lyrics - kinda melancholy.

submissions
Cake – Short Skirt/Long Jacket Lyrics 18 years ago
He's obviously being sarcastic, in that he has all these unreal expectations for the woman he wants. He wants her to do and be everything. The music part is cool, but I too "miss a little bit the rising action." It rocks, but definitely needs more rising action.

submissions
Cake – Alpha Beta Parking Lot Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a great song with cool lyrics. People remember wierd details about traumatic events - like people remembering where they were, the weather, and all kinds of other details when they heard Kennedy was killed or the planes hit the twin towers on 9/11/2001. He remembers it was the supermarket parking lot and the fumes from cars.

KISS – (You Make Me) Rock Hard Lyrics 18 years ago
On the surface it may appear to be about erections, but I think "erection" is a metaphor for meeting your full potential in life. More specifically I think he had aspirations to a hard-rock geologist, and is lamenting that he might have missed his calling :-0 I mean KISS is really deep lyrically and this song just shows their depth. On the surface they may seem to be about partying, stayin up all night, and bangin' chicks - but you gotta get beyond that and dig deeper to get the most out of their music.

Buffalo Tom – Crutch Lyrics 18 years ago
His relationship with a woman was complicated by drug use and they split. He's moved on - "almost grown," and wants to get away from that lifestyle. She's still in love with him and has tried to quit - she's "come across the snowy" fields to see him. But it's not working for her. He still has feelings for her, but he's torn between Boston, his past, and San Francisco, his future. I guess he ends up in Boston again.

X – Under the Big Black Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
My favorite X song. Loneliness of touring on the road and the difficulty of maintaining a marriage while being a rock musician. Depressing song. Not sure how all the religious references fit in.
