The Knife – Without You My Life Would Be Boring Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is talking about identity: without it, life would be boring. Without territorial dispute, and our seeming 'necessity' to draw and define boundaries so as to properly categorize reality, our selves, and the 'IDentities' that surround us, we couldn't tell narratives which captivate our imaginations and allow us...

to create new identities and to change. That's what the second part of the song is about. 'What if we can't make it but we say that we can' means, well, what if we can't change ourselves, but we try to anyways? 'We're laughing about the future and we cry 'bout the past' would suggest that change is necessary for our health. We feel traumatized by past events, but we commit to feeling detached and in good humour about what is to come.

This album is about Shaking the Habitual, as it is titled. The Knife has felt in a sense pigeonholed by their music, cast in a category, and they felt it necessary to challenge people's perspectives, but more importantly, to challenge their own. Though many people abandoned them in this newest iteration because it clearly is not a very accessible set of songs, I can say that without bands like the Knife driving the conversation forward and helping to produce music that challenges convention in all its facets, we wouldn't get to where music is today.

The Smiths – This Night Has Opened My Eyes Lyrics 10 years ago
Morrissey sounds as if he's muttering "you're a murderer" after the second chorus... sort of casually throwing it out there that she murdered the child, and he's indifferent to it not in the sense that he doesn't care, but that the feelings of sadness and the feelings of relief cancel each other out.

The Bled – Dale Earnhardt’s Seatbelt Lyrics 10 years ago
My interpretation of this song is that when these types of national tragedies happen, the media glorifies them with overexposure, with constant interviews and pundits on the subject as it unfolds into a controversy of epic proportions. Sure, these events are dramatic in themselves but the media has a way of putting them on an even bigger stage. And so, people react with horror, and disgust, and all sorts of emotions, when in reality, does the tragedy truly affect them in some meaningful way? In most cases, not really, debates are sparked but not often do these tragedies yield national consequences. Just sadness and drama that people can engage in, maybe to feel human? I guess that's part of it. We as humans not only like to feel joy together, but pain as well. And like James seems to indicate in many songs, that living in this society with its relationships and binding ties and all, that ultimately we suffer pain and hurt, and that ultimately, you kind of have to be something of an emotional masochist to want to live through it. You have to understand that on some level, we glorify this kind of suffering. And eventually, you may choose to become numb to it, hence 'let's set our hearts to self-destruct'. Choosing not to feel anything is better than suffering the celebration of pain that this society and the media purports. This is why I like the Bled's lyrics. They are in some sense removed and observational, and at the same time, they convey the madness that comes with what we do to each other in relationships. The absurdity of life becomes apparent when I listen to the words, and the music is a perfect excuse to let the energy of stockpiled emotions out. The Bled, you will be missed.

Nirvana – Plateau Lyrics 12 years ago
TO expand on your theory of atonement/salvation, the "book about birds" would be referring to some sort of guide that helps you to understand and observe the world as it really is, having achieved this state, but I think this song was written quickly and that the journey to salvation arms you with this consciousness and you needn't a guide once you plateau.

Radiohead – Pyramid Song Lyrics 12 years ago
I used to think this song was about committing suicide and the memories flashing before one's eyes. But now I understand it to be about ego death. People describe hypothermic incidents to be ones where their lives may flash before their eyes, but also ones where they have an out of body experience. At a moment like that where your experience becomes not that of your body but of pure awareness, the ego is seen as it can be truly defined: as another random configuration of sensory data. This moment in pyramid song is such a moment where time does not exist, past and future experiences aggregate into this one little vehicle, to where they sail off into nothingness/beyond. Fear and doubt have been eradicated at this point. Without ego, there is neither fear nor doubt. Well, as countless egos have come after me in blistering arguments, I am sure someone will gainfully propose that I am wrong. To those of you in the realm of ego-- investigate your own egos and what they do to protect themselves. seek to eradicate it, even in fleeting moments with success. It does you no good.

Death from Above 1979 – We Don't Sleep at Night Lyrics 13 years ago
i personally think it is about becoming a musician and the sacrifices you have to make. when people ask you to explain why you do it, you explain to them that it is love. and that is all that matters. and sometimes you stay up all night creating what you love. if you want to make it in the business, all nighters may be necessary.

Erykah Badu – Window Seat Lyrics 14 years ago
this song is pretty much how I feel right now. People can be demanding and it's hard to feel listened to when you feel like everyone is talking over each other. sometimes you need a breath, a beat away from the constant chatter of the real world. sometimes it is good to get that space and to just be alone. at the end of her video, erykah fakes being shot and purple blood gushes out of her head, spelling the word "groupthink" in cursive, and she talks about how individuality takes a back seat to being invested in group dealings. the idea of this song is that in order to remain yourself, sometimes you just need to get a window seat and be alone and reflect. I think I could use a window seat right about now.

Devendra Banhart – Carmensita Lyrics 14 years ago
my take on the song
is that he is speaking about a lover of his, who is passionate and fiery like the sun,
but because she is also like alcohol, she is intoxicating and is known for volatile behavior.
his love for her, is like a beard that grows on him, and becomes almost too uncontrollable, because though
he tries to cut it off, it grows back.
she attracts him because she is exotic and otherworldly, and because he feels her presence even when she leaves.
he knows she is too much but stays with her. he beckons her to soften her ways, and tries to overpower her,
but he is left damaged in trying to tame her.
he likens her to a snake who constricts him and his love in her heart. the relationship is consuming him, and he is lost in the myriad colors in her eyes, and how they change with emotion.
the end is ambiguous, it could mean that while the two separate, her a snake and him an elephant, and remain entwined at the very least in friendship or aquaintance, and that all is good,
or that they remain together, consumed by each other in passion.
beautiful stuff, i must say, and definitely about the passion of love and how it consumes us, inebriates us, entrances us. you can tell that a man like devendra is an emotional dude whose feminine side is an attractive quality, an artist's intuition so to speak which draws him to emotional, raw human beings. i think this song has much to do with his relationship with natalie portman as she is in the music video. portman is a powerful actress on screen and even at a young age had the power to elicit emotions even with just her eyes, a quality she has yet to forget. no doubt the two had an intense relationship, a fiery tryst that was meant to burn out, as its foundations were that of lust.

right, so i think this song is about being the other man and feeling like the odd one out because the girl can't make up her mind between you and her current sig. other. it's a pretty shitty feeling, it happens to me over and over and i sort of want it to stop.

The Fiery Furnaces – I'm Gonna Run Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is about wanting to quit work at an office job and how work generally drives the writer of this song insane, just look at the lyrics and how they incorporate repulsive habits with the use of office supplies.

the chorus implies that the writer will take their two weeks notice and after that, leave their office job... the chorus also conveys the feeling of constrictedness, of having to "walk" like everyone else, and then they can finally "run" free after their two weeks is up.

i love the fiery furnaces, they fucking rock.

Björk – The Anchor Song Lyrics 19 years ago
i guess you could say that smiley, but also i felt like this song has to do with isolation and/or loneliness.... what better way to isolate onesself than to dive to the bottom of the sea and stay there? i like this song because what it means to me is that no matter what there is always a way to escape everything and be by yourself.

The Unicorns – Sea Ghost Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song has to do with the singer going thru a break-up. in the beginning, the relationship he had with the other person was what he felt like in the beginning of the song: parasite and host. but as the song develops (like the relationship) he begins to like the thought of having his other around. by the time he is cleansed of her/him, and then at the end he is wondering where they went, which shows he really wanted them around after all.

Deerhoof – This Magnificent Bird Will Rise Lyrics 19 years ago
YOU MISSED A LINE:

The trumpet scatters its awful sound
Over the graves of all lands
*summoning all before the throne*
Death and mankind shall be stunned
When Nature arises
To give account before the Judge

also, i think this lyric has to do with the demise of existence as we know it, or rather the earth and subsequently, mankind. i think it means that no matter how badly we try to change things, nature will have the final say.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Date with the Night Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song has to do with sexual fetishes

"i got a date with the night" refers to having sex with anonymous strangers.... she will have sex with the night so to speak
"burnin down my finger" -pain, s&m type stuff
..."we're sweatin in the winter" - refers to having sex outside during the winter... like sex in public places
"both thighs squeezed tight, choke choke choke..." refers to something involving pain and pleasure... like auto/erotic aspyxiation
"don't tell me to fix her..." obviously referring to someones comfortability to their own fetishes, and the controversy it creates. don't tell me to change the fetishes someone has, thats the way they were made.
"we'll just take a bite....(allthe way to) droppin brides at the altar" this refers to quick, casual sex with the tempting tease 'well just take a bite'
"i'll set you i'll set it off" basically 'ill find your fetish and i will exploit it to get what i want, great sex.
