Foals – Cassius Lyrics | 16 years ago |
@kelefromthebloc When you say the fall of Rome, do you mean the Republic or the Empire? Cos I don't see it... |
Franz Ferdinand – 40 Ft. Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I've always imagined it was about that moment at the end of Quadrophenia where Jimmy looks down at the sea, then runs Ace's scooter off the cliff, symbolically casting off his Mod identity and watching it fall and smash on the rocks. The cliff looks a lot higher than forty feet though. |
Nine Inch Nails – The Beginning of the End Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It sounds like an ordinary objective citizen looking around and seeing what the world has become: totalitarian, selfish and militant. He's remarking on how in this new world, it's every man for himself; in the effort to conform, he's forgotten who he used to be. |
Franz Ferdinand – Love And Destroy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've been listening to this song for years, but I only twigged today as I was reading The Master and Margarita; the phrase "Muscovite sky" came up and I thought of this song. Brilliant book, great song. For anyone who hasn't read Bulgakov's masterpiece, it's about a girl called Margarita who agrees to act as the hostess at Satan's ball when in exchange for the return of her missing lover. On her way to meet Satan, she takes a moonlight broomstick ride over Moscow. |
Muse – Hoodoo Lyrics | 17 years ago |
COME to be How did it come to be Tied to a railroad NO LOVE to set us free Watch our souls fade away Let our bodies crumblING Don't be afraid... I will take the BLOW for you That moment where he sings "afraid" with the string crescendo underneath is... heartbreaking. For me this is about an idealist who accidentally sucks someone into his world, falls in love with her, then loses her on the day of reckoning towards which he's been hurtling all along. |
The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
One of the very few innocently, simply, beautiful songs. |
Klaxons – Atlantis to Interzone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Klaxons are the best thing to happen to music in the last six months. Should I be worried that their songs sound like the inside of my head? WE'RE FRAGMENTS OF FICTION |
Radiohead – Exit Music (For a Film) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Until I checked this site just now I never took the Romeo and Juliet angle specifically. It's about a guy and his girlfriend running away to get away from her controlling father; the line "in everlasting peace" implies that they committed suicide together. "We hope that you choke" - they hope that their disappearance will make the father regret everything he said/did. Gorgeous song. |
Radiohead – Pyramid Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me, this song is about death but I find it very comforting. "Jumped into the river" - he's actually committing suicide. "All the things I used to see" - watching his life flash before his eyes "All my lovers were there with me" - finding comfort and love in death "Nothing to fear, nothing to doubt" - death is nothing to be afraid of. Beautiful song. The other night, I sat in a cove watching the sun go down over the sea, listening to that song. Then a few hours later, just staring up at the stars. Not many songs can soundtrack sights like that, which speaks for itself. |
Muse – Falling Away with You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Destructive love. The more he thinks about it, the more he realises that they never had 'good old days', and even though they're breaking up he still can't bear to be without her. |
Muse – Shine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
No, should have just been tacked on to OoS - that album was too damn short. Futurism should've been on there too. It's a good song, though the acoustic version on Hullabaloo was *shite*. It's about breaking up, and at first he's pissed off with her for betraying him somehow - not being there for him - but by the end he has a sudden change of mind and asks, "Take me back again." |
Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It can be about so many things, but I take it to be all about Marvin from H2G2 and his frustration with living beings. Though I can't recall any point in the books where he says he'd like to just kill everyone ("When I am king you will be first against the wall"), believing he is better, that seems to be the sentiment. And then he does. "The panic / The vomit" is humanity's reaction - "the crackle of pig skin / the dust and the screaming / the yuppies networking" is what he can see around him. "God loves his children" - taunting that their god has done nothing to save them. Brilliant song. |
Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's mixing Orwell's 1984 with anti-Bushism. Love it. It's the struggle to go with the flow in a world which he has realised to be corrupt and non-sensical. It incorporates his fear that he may be going insane as well as his frustration that he's the only one who's noticed what's going on (eg the shifting alliances). 'Hail to the Thief' can apply either to Big Brother or George W. Bush. Brilliant song. I generally seem to love songs based on 1984 - see Muse's Citizen Erased. |
Muse – Hyper Chondriac Music Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Hyper Music was the immediate aftermath of the argument, this is when he's calmed down. He could either be reminding himself of just why they broke up, or mocking himself for being so stupid as to finish it. |
Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about hope and fulfilling your potential - basically, the time has come to prove yourself. |
Muse – Jimmy Kane Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's someone very messed up talking to himself. One of Muse's worst songs, I think. That, and Con-Science, and Fillip. |
Muse – Fury Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's some sort of illicit relationship anyway, not necessarily homosexual. The ultimate agnostic's chorus: And we'll *pray* that there's no God to punish us... Love it. |
Muse – Dark Shines Lyrics | 19 years ago |
thecomaboy hit the nail on the head. He wants this girl who's quite young, I mean really 'Hysteria'-style wants her. He feels great when he's with her, but when he's NOT he gets pretty obsessive. With the second verse, it sounds like they're on a date, at the movies or something (Hold your hands up to your eyes again / Hide from the scary scenes) or it could be some sort of a metaphor. I don't know. "And your innocence / I will consume" Brilliant, Muse are so good at dark songs. |
Muse – Uno Lyrics | 19 years ago |
^ Yeah, Muse have a few Bond-theme-style ones - Dark Shines and the chorus of Sunburn come to mind. Brilliant anyway. He loves her, but she doesn't want to be in a relationship right now and he's really pissed off, trying to make out like it doesn't matter to him when it obviously does. It's like Unintended was one side of a relationship that's being put on hold, but this is the girl's part. Or maybe this is the guy and Unintended was the girl. |
Muse – Hate This and I'll Love You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
He's empowering himself to get out of a relationship where he's being dominated. "Cos I was born / To destroy you" Matt really gives this one his all, and I love it. The title is pretty pessimistic - it seems like the harder he tries to get out the relationship, the more he is drawn back into it. |
Muse – Sunburn Lyrics | 19 years ago |
He's attracted to a girl who's taunting him for not being successful. But he knows she feels terrible about doing so, she's keeping up a facade to hide her own insecurities. He's strangely drawn to her. It reminds me of Dark Shines - wanting a girl who can only bring him down. |
Muse – Unintended Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'm not so sure about the marriage angle. I read somewhere that Matt had a phone conversation with a girl and suddenly felt totally in love with her - and that's what inspired him when he wrote this song. It's about falling hopelessly, stupefyingly in love - being totally caught off balance by someone when you weren't even looking for love. The thing that makes this so bittersweet is that he can't be in a relationship even though the girl is up for it. Everyone who's ever had a huge crush will love this song, every Matt-Bellamy-fangirl's fantasizes that it was written about her. (I'm with Lici in that respect...) |
Muse – Cave Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's like Rambo said. He's pissed off about something of his own and feels smothered by the girlfriend. He's warning her when he says: "Come in my cave / And I'll burn your heart away." But chances are, it *was* about her - "so you'll never hear a single word I say" seems pretty bitter, as if that's the norm. He says something rash anyway when he's angry and suddenly it's over. Love that song. I remember hearing it in 'Little Nicky' and thinking it was cool, but I didn't catch who sang it in the credits. Now I'm bloody obsessed with the band... Funny old world. |
Muse – Dead Star Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Terror booty. He had a crush on a girl he was close to - a friend or something. Then something huge happens (they recorded it in NY post-9/11 so no prizes for guessing what THAT was) and now she's all messed up. She has no direction, so he doesn't feel so much for her any more. BUT the irony is that he's as mixed up as she is, otherwise he wouldn't be feeling angsty at her for sleeping around - he still thinks she'd be better off with him. Those lyrics ^ are wrong, by the way. Shame on you for thinking You're an exception We're all to blame Crashing down to earth Wasting and burning out, yeah Fading like a dead star Harm is coming your way Yeah it's coming your way You used to be everything to me But now you're tired of fighting Tired of fighting Fighting yourself Shame on you for thinking You're all alone If you want I'll make you wish you were Failing to impress Why can't you sleep with Someone who'll protect you? Harm is coming your way Yeah, it's coming your way You used to be everything to me But now you're tired of fighting Tired of fighting Fighting yourself |
Muse – Overdue Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It ties in with Muscle Museum and is probably the dirtiest song on Showbiz. The unsupportive gf is sick of him being away playing all the time, when he gets back she won't give him any, so he finishes it. |
Muse – Muscle Museum Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about an unsupportive girlfriend. He's busting his (really very nice) ass trying to 'make it' and she thinks he's making "a big mistake". "I have played in every toilet" - the crappy gigs Muse played on their way to the top. Well, in the UK anyway. Apparently there were times they would play to about 30 people in a British pub, then go across the Channel to play to a crowd of 10,000 screaming French fans. Thank God the rest of the world have wised up a bit. |
Muse – Plug In Baby Lyrics | 19 years ago |
As someone else said, since Matt has no idea what it's about then it can be taken any way you like. Apparently he was on mushrooms when he recorded it, dunno about the rest of the band. It has the futuristic theme of Origin of Symmetry, but this one seems to be about a relationship where both partners are really just using each other, but he's pissed off when it turns out that she was cheating. He feels like he was doing all the work in their relationship anyway, but she has his back. It's a very cold reaction to the end of a relationship. |
Muse – Yes Please Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Whatever the lyrics are, it's about a guy Matt know whose life was totally destroyed by his drug addiction. |
Muse – New Born Lyrics | 19 years ago |
All right, we've established that this song is bloody brilliant (fairytale piano then that huge filthy riff, even crunchier than 'Dead Star') but not a lot about what it's about. That little genius Bellamy has said it's about computers taking over, but let's face it: he doesn't know what the hell he's on about half the time - that might have been the emotion behind the song, but it doesn't explain the lyrics. I take it as a dying relationship where the girl has realised she's pregnant. "The love for what you hide / And the bitterness inside / Is growing like the new born", "you're swelling up") This song is actually pretty evil - he's practically taunting her, because he doesn't want to be in the relationship any more. ("stretch it like it's a birth squeeze") But as the song goes on, he starts to panic, realising the implications of the situation ("show me it's real / Wasting our last chance to come away") - he has an obligation to this girl now and is stuck. This is probably my favourite Muse song - the only one that rivals it in my mind is Snow Patrol's 'Ways and Means' which is coincidentally about the exact same situation. |
Muse – Hysteria Lyrics | 19 years ago |
But how would the 'I want your heart and you soul' lines apply to drugs? I agree with Soulkist - I don't see the prostitute thing either. The video (the one I saw anyway) is a guy obsessed with this girl, following her around and finally getting her into bed, then he freaks her out and she runs away, he gets pissed off and trashes the room. Simple. :-D Great song, I wish I could see it live - my speakers don't go up loud enough. |
Snow Patrol – Somewhere a Clock Is Ticking Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It reminds me of The Silence of the Lambs, for some reason. It's like he's holding someone hostage in his house, and saying he can do anything to - her? SotL again - the clock is just that, a clock, somewhere else in the house. 'Every second / Dripping off my fingertips' has got to be blood, whether it's his own or not is another story. I never thought about the war thing. |
Snow Patrol – Tiny Little Fractures Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I wouldn't call Spitting Games upbeat, but I agree with simsfreg: it could be straight out of a movie. I picture this guy running through the rain - they're from NI after all and it rains here pretty much all the time - in some city somewhere, through little laneways, leaping over garden fences and all that kind of romantic crap. He turns up on her doorstep to apologise, he doesn't have an explanation and neither does she. But like a few of their other songs, he doesn't want the relationship to end and chances are, it won't. Optimistic and sort of desperate at the same time. I don't know anyone who doesn't like this song. Except the goths in my class but they don't like anything. |
Snow Patrol – One Night Is Not Enough Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I know, I didn't think it *could* get better. That solo is fantastic, so - as Aliel said - bittersweet. |
Snow Patrol – How to Be Dead Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the whole song is sung by the guy, the 'big boy' line is just him repeating what the girl has said to him. He feels as though every time something goes wrong she blames him, and in this argument he's confessing that he's on drugs - as andwun said, probably apologizing for something he did under the influence. I don't think it's a song about two men. Not ruling it out, but I just don't think it is. Oh, and by the way, it's definitely 'wit'. I thought it was 'weed' at first but it's much clearer live. :D Brilliant song, something very soothing about it. |
Snow Patrol – Firelight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Not really, though, if you think about the lyrics ;-) Racy... I love this one, there's something really raw about it. |
Snow Patrol – Favourite Friend Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's cool how it just melts into 100 Things You Should Have Done in Bed. |
Snow Patrol – Velocity Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about falling for a drug addict. I love how the note sort of lingers at the end of 'Just wanna stay here in your arms', and then when they repeat it near the end... beautiful. |
Snow Patrol – Crazy In Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
No, they don't always do it. I saw them play it on Xfm's website. The rap bit is different in my version though. (I found a live MP3 of it somewhere, I think it's recorded off the BBC from the lyrics...) Northern Irish people should NOT rap, we don't have the right accent, but the rap bit goes: Y'all know, y'all know in the flow it's loco Young Snow in the BBC, uh-oh There's a few other changes but I'd put that down to mishearing the Beyoncé lyrics. Cool cover, though, it sounds all stalkery and creepy like they're really *crazy*. |
Snow Patrol – Wow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think it's called 'Wow' because that's the first thing that comes into his head when he sees her... It seems to be him trying to fix things with his girlfriend, but he knows they can make it work. |
Snow Patrol – Ways and Means Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about a guy feeling restless in a relationship. He wants to get out but doesn't really want to make the effort. Stagnation. Brilliant song, it's my absolute favourite. |
Snow Patrol – Starfighter Pilot Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about this guy who's obsessed with a celebrity, right? |
Snow Patrol – Half the Fun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I took it as a guy chasing this girl - he 'won't last it' if he's not with her, but she's not ready for a relationship with him or something. I though the whole 'lick your own wounds thing' was that she got pregnant. Or something. To be honest I can't really concentrate on the lyrics with this song. Not really sure, I just think it's a cool song. |
Snow Patrol – An Olive Grove Facing the Sea Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I saw this played live (screeched along, too) and really, it's so beautiful Gary Lightbody's voice was almost shaking. Achingly angsty. |
