Could be Nina. Or it could be Dottie.. since, as you know, "The You I Created" was part of her side project called My First Keyboard. This is Dottie.. not Nina. |

This song has the *GREATEST* build up. Like, the chorus should be written in bright red, all caps and underlined. HOPELESS!!! That's right. Find someone else to service you-- I'm done. So freakin' intense. |

You have to fall in love completely. A little bit won't do.
It's not selfish to want it when you realize you need it. |

of Montreal – Psychotic Feeling Lyrics

I'm not going to comment on whatever this song was supposed to be about. I don't really care about Kevin's divorce or whatever, even though this was "previously unreleased" and wasn't on Hissing Fauna (which, incidentally, I am sooo dissapointed in). Anyway, the question asks "What does this song mean to YOU", not "what does this song mean to the writer?"
I get so weirded out by timing. This song was on the Polyvinyl Sampler that they sent with Hissing Fauna. I can't even describe how perfect this is with a certain situation of mine. "How can we escape from this indigent state?" How can I even BEGIN to open myself up to you? Will you ever do the same for me?
Not to mention, this song sounds AMAZING. And, ugh-- taciturn! What a word! This is the Of Montreal I know and love. |

of Montreal – Voltaic Crusher/Undrum to Muted Da Lyrics

Just as it was when Sunlandic Twins came out, I like the EP better than the CD. This song is so great. "Please don't lose any sleep over me, baby, I hardly exist.
You gave me your hand, I gave you a fist" pretty much sums it up. So sad. |

of Montreal – My Favourite Christmas (In a Hundred Words or Less) Lyrics

Some eleven months after my first comment, I finally tracked down this song. Not that I was on a constant search or anything, er. Anyway, I am disappointed. I thought it would sound a little more like "Baby" or fit into Cherry Peel a little bit more. Should've known, anyway, 'cause it's on The Bird Who Continues. This song sure fits with the style of that CD, but I think that with these lyrics, they could have really made something stellar. Oh, well. |

Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics
|
This song means so much to me. It perfectly describes a friendship situation that I have.
The first part, I think, is a dialogue between two friends. The narrarator is telling the second person all about what they've been doing recently, that they've been thinking of them, having dreams about them. He goes on to rant a little bit. The second person finally realizes the narrarator is there and probably wasn't listening to what he said: "I'm glad that you are waiting with me, tell me all about your day", when he clearly just said everything. Then, he goes on to talk about how breaking off is misery, how the second person has been neglecting them and staying out with their new friends. It's so sad and depressing when you realize that you love and depend on someone who doesn't return the feelings, even if it's just a friend. You think, am I crazy (a cuckoo) for caring so much? What is wrong with me? It's so hard to let go, even when you know that the person is making you emotionally sick and hate yourself. "I'd like to see you, but really I should stay away and let you settle down. I’ve got no claims to your crown. I was the boss of you and I loved you, you know I loved you. It's all over now," shows how he realizes that he has to move on and be independent, but it's just so lonely to be on his own.. as he takes everything to be a sign and listent to philosophy for advice.. but it's not enough. His friendship needs just aren't being met at all. It still hurts. He just feels so stupid for caring for so long, so worthless and.. replacable.
Hm, I got a little into that, but that's basically what is going on with me and how the song could be interpreted. Even though Thin Lizzy's song is rather upbeat, B&S has a way of making it sound a little more lonely. This song is just so perfect. |

Rilo Kiley – Science vs. Romance Lyrics

Sure, the whole God part comes in, but I really understand the "text versus romance" theme. You can only go far with words.. they're just zeroes and ones. We're not robots inside a grid, we're people. Whoever she's singing to is far away, maybe nervous, and she's growing more impatient. She wants him to know-- I'm lonely, too. |

Erlend Øye – Sudden Rush Lyrics
|
The balance between believing that someone is in love with you and the feeling when all crashes down and you come back to reality when you remember that there's nothing there. When he first sees her there's a "sudden rush of expectation" for what could be and tries to justify that she's in love with him-- "Why did you come at all if it wasn't for me?" She comes back just to return the book that she borrowed in the hallway where they first met; not because she likes him. Shut down! It's when you meet somebody for a split second, over-analyze the few small details and tear yourself apart over it, making mountains of mole hills. Story of my life, hah. |

Flake Music – The Shins Lyrics

Yay! I've been trying to figure out what the heck they're saying for a long time. This song and Spanway Hits (my screen-namesake) are the most almost-audible of the entire CD, basically. I'll try and write down the lyrics to that one and post it.
To me, it sounds like "Wade through the mud and return wearing white/Hanging like clothes on a line/And I'll wait for you to spend all your time." Sort of like he's waiting for something that'll never come, comparing it to something that is impossible.. wading through the mud and returning wearing white. If we could tell what this song meant, that would help a whole lot. Also, "We'll scale the walls and go five miles high". But, either could fit.
But anyway, no matter what he's saying or it means, it still sounds good. This song is great. My favorite line is "waiting like grapes on a vine". |

I definitely hear "sorry", not "a love song". Listen for the "s" and the "r".
I'm still not sure about that very last part, though. Any suggestions and I'll edit it. |

Belle & Sebastian – Judy and the Dream of Horses Lyrics

"To see a horse in your dream represents a strong, physical energy. You need to tame the wild forces. The dream may imply that you have been horsing around. Or perhaps you need to be less arrogant and 'get off your high horse'."

of Montreal – So Begins Our Alabee Lyrics
| 18 years ago

First, this is the only song that gets me teary if I just sit and listen and watch the video. It's intense.
Second, some important vocab/historical references. I love listening to Of Montreal, I learn so much. Haha.
Petrarch- Italian poet famous for his love poems
Dido- Roman Mythology, queen of Carthage who killed herself when Aeneas abandoned her.
aesthete- "One who cultivates an unusually high sensitivity to beauty, as in art or nature"
abject- miserable
Third, what it's about, I may have a clue. In the Japanese bonus track,'"Family Nouveau', it's written:
"I just had to move on and start my grown up life with you
You and me and our little Alabee
My god it happened to me
I really have my own family"
Perhaps this song is about having a baby and starting that new chapter in his life. I'm not privy to what Kevin is up to besides Of Montreal, but who knows.
If it's not that, then its whatever you want to make it; and make it, I do. |

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Timorous Me Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
To me, this is a song about missing old times with people that didn't really matter to you, but you still miss it for some reason. "My life rolls on just like it did before but I wonder what it is that I even miss him for." Timorous means "Full of apprehensiveness; timid". It seems like he is missing these times in his life where he had the opportunity to do something that didn't really matter, but he backed down, and he's regretting it.
But really, who cares what it means. THIS SONG IS SO GOOD. |
