Rhett Miller – World Inside The World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Actually it's probably also inspired by Libra, if not moreso than Underworld. The quote "there is a world inside the world" was taken off page 13 of DeLillo's Libra. I'm reading it now at my kitchen table and just realized Rhett didn't write that line himself. Womp womp. |
The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
At this point, I don't even remember why I would've thought it'd been placed in Scotland. Probably misinformation from a misinformed young Pitchforker or what-have-you. Apologies! |
Joanna Newsom – Soft as Chalk Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I just saw her at Town Hall NYC this week, and watching her play this on piano was NUTS. I'm pretty sure this is the song that requires some serious crossover technique??? And the whole time, she was nodding and smiling and bobbing like it was The Greatest Thing she's ever done. Which it was. The show, I mean. We were all breathless. I feel like the whole album is her unraveling relationship with Bill Callahan and the developments with Andy Samberg... So this song is like a nostalgic malaise that comes from looking back on ANY relationship. ("Give love a little shove and it becomes terror") It is 2am. |
Braid – (Strawberry Ann) Switzerland Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I want to know what Chris is yelling at the very end of the song... "If I asked you, I wish you would stay" maybe??? |
Neko Case – People Got A Lotta Nerve Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Call me crass, but I wish I'd thought of this song when that animal trainer was killed by the Sea World orca whale the other day. We know they call them killer whales But you seem surprised when it pinned you down to the bottom of the tank. People continually forget what animate objects can do, people included. |
Andrew Bird – Imitosis Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Definitely something to do with Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, an epic of science and culture. The preface to Gravity's Rainbow is a quote by Wernher von Braun: "Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death." Pynchon has also written an essay called "Togetherness" about missile safety. It's hard to make a direct correlation between GR and this song, but there's got to be something there. We were all basically alone, despite what all the studies have shown. |
The Decemberists – Shanty for the Arethusa Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Perhaps I can shed the tiniest bit of light, following on what synth3sia said: Colin Meloy is obsessed with Under Milk Wood. Given. In the very beginning exposition of the radio play, the "First Voice" character talks about the ships in the water. "And you alone can hear the invisible starfall, the darkest-before-dawn minutely dewgrazed stir of the black, dab-filled sea where the ARETHUSA, the Curlew and the Skylark, Zanzibar, Rhiannon, the Rover, the Cormorant, and the Star of Wales tilt and ride." Maybe he chose to write a story for one of the ships? |
Morning... – Anywhere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"You can be my Scarlett" As in Bill Murray's foil during the movie Lost in Translation. No big deal. |
Braid – The Chandelier Swing Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It broke my heart to watch the Braid DVD / documentary. On one of their last shows, they let their merch guy get on the walkie and say "This is the chandelier swing." Broke my damn heart and I cried because I wished it'd been me. And what am I left with now? All the mp3s and Bob Nanna's Twitter and myself. I don't even have my copy of the Braid DVD because someone stole it. |
The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
William is the one singing this song to Margaret. He spends the day wandering in the form of a fawn, which is how Margaret originally found him. At night, he's a man. So here in this song, he's a man, doing manly things with his lover, Margaret. And it's freaking BEAUTIFUL. BTWz, the story's set roughly in the Scotland area. |
The Decemberists – A Bower Scene Lyrics | 15 years ago |
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS. Oh my goodness. |
Guillemots – Cats Eyes Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The clarinet in this song is so beautiful. |
Braid – Forever Got Shorter Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I cried when I missed the reunion tour. Boohoo, and all of that. |
Braid – Eulalia, Eulalia Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I went bowling a couple weeks ago, and my bowling name was Eulalia. It gave us a good chuckle |
The Decemberists – The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I can't believe how metal I feel when this gets me headbangin'. |
Braid – Roses In The Car Lyrics | 15 years ago |
STATIC MADE OLD RADIO Now I know STATIC MADE OLD RADIOOOOOO YEAH! <3. |
Missy Elliott – I'm Really Hot Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Ratatat's remix of this song is so sick. |
The Decemberists – Cocoon Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Colin would love to make this song be about something obscure like "two archaeologists in love" but he'd also love for it to be about ... (whatever this song is about, for him.) I sure can't picture him and Carson encased in ash. God forbid. But NogoodBoyo- love your name. Colin clearly was a fan of Under Milkwood, because it's laden with images and phrases he's 'borrowed'. |
Hey Mercedes – Roulette Systems Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is also probably the ONLY song in the world that mentions cell phones but doesn't irritate me in doing so. |
The Decemberists – My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist Lyrics | 15 years ago |
BTWz- Colin was an English Lit major |
The Decemberists – My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist Lyrics | 15 years ago |
No, I remember Colin saying distinctly that this song was just to make Carson laugh. And it probably worked really well, much in the same way that "Dracula's Daughter" kills everyone. Dude, I made a Tarkio joke to Rachel Blumberg last night. ...It was fuckin' awesome. (Nate Query hugged me.) |
The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The girl's name is Myfanwy it's Welsh |
The Decemberists – Raincoat Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Now, now, children. I'm sure we all have our differing opinions over the criteria for Colin's finest. This certainly isn't "Dracula's Daughter," so we'll play it cool here. |
Braid – A Dozen Roses Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Static did indeed make old radio. |
Braid – Divers Lyrics | 15 years ago |
But you're not really Bob Nanna, you big misnomer! I wish I was Bob. |
Braid – American Typewriter Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Four years later and this song still blows my brain out every time. |
Ambulance LTD – Stay Tuned Lyrics | 15 years ago |
possible corrections: What would I do without it? Think I been down like that (?) I've got to move (or) I'm sinking And I only came to win We'll take to the end of space You make me wanna say pretty things to people far away |
Braid – The New Nathan Detroits Lyrics | 15 years ago |
oh and also, "the kid's in our heads" might be parallel to the fact that, for 12-14 years, Adelaide pretended her and Nathan Detroit had 5 children, but they were all fictional. |
Braid – The New Nathan Detroits Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I bet they were watching Guys and Dolls on the flight back, because this song is friggin' rife with references to it. "take it and shake it and kiss it to death" (rolling dice!)/ making a few bucks / paper (ever make a marker for a bet?) / paying to play and vice versa. Don't get me wrong- I'd hate to overinterpret anything Bob Nanna has ever said, but fack dood, Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) and Adelaide's romance in G&D are overshadowed by Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) and Sarah Brown. Sky also talks a lot about his father throughout, so maybe that accounts for some of the "son" singing. Addy does do a lot of worrying-- as she should-- because Nathan doesn't exactly want to get hitched. Anyhoo, that's my insight, having come fresh from a G&D viewing with much love for Nanna in my heart. Don't yell at me, either-- I know how you songmeanings people can be. |
Seabear – I Sing I Swim Lyrics | 15 years ago |
You two are infecting this song with vampires; I do not distribute any nods or kudos to you. Unrelated: Luke, you found me, but I can't contact you in any way. In answer to your question, I thought some of the lyrical imagery was similar to certain little details in the movie. And it's all fanciful. It is beautiful and it makes me happy. |
Devendra Banhart – Korean Dogwood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Sorry, dood, but I feel like I heard it differently. Red oak sugar, And Korean dogwood and Korean dogwood Vibes turn to rubbed rum, Lit by mission moonlight, kangas on that hillside You are my life, And you baffle me some like an endless maple Inca cornflower You’re my baby’s blue eyes And when you're gown dissolves in a prayer You’ll hear a sound That rings true and fair Black king lightning, The dawn of orange blossoms and orange blossoms My friend Piegan, Drawing endless love songs, endless love songs Calm breath, sweet being, Show me what you’re seeing, show me what you’re seeing And though right and loud and proud Every little word It still ain't heard Strange prayers looming, Over all our brothers, over all our brothers Prison life served But Navajo(?) Gospel is a rope thrown helpful Oh... But for sure all that we’ve made Will be swallowed by the Earth For it’s got no worth... |
The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I was just googling Carson Ellis's artwork, and came upon her interpretation of this song. I haven't actually seen the booklet, I don't think, so I'm not too sure if it's the same one-- (A large man rowing and a smaller demure-looking woman in a boat.) I'm trying to submit it to the Fan Art base on Decemberists.com, so if you guys see a shoulder up there, it's obviously me. I even showed it to Carson Ellis and her mom at a show in Brooklyn and they told me it was fucking sweet. |
Soulja Boy – Crank That (Soulja Boy) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I can't believe I even just deigned to comment on this song. |
Soulja Boy – Crank That (Soulja Boy) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
oh man, I always thought he was yelling "YOUUUU!" not "do" |
Braid – Eulalia, Eulalia Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I know Braid cut a bit of it out, like "Beauty with a cut on its finger" and the end of the excerpt I added. Weird. It's also supposed to say "to enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day." Don't know what I was thinking. |
Braid – Eulalia, Eulalia Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Between the innocence of babyhood and the dignity of manhood, we find a delightful creature called a Boy. Boys comes in assorted sizes, weights and colors, but all boys have the same creed: to enjoy every minute of every second of every day, and to protest with noise (their only weapon) when their last minute is finished and the adult males pack them off to bed at night. Boys are found everywhere-- on top of, underneath, inside of, climbing on, swinging from, running around, or jumping to. Mothers love them. Little girls hate them. Older sisters and brothers tolerate them, adults ignore them, and Heaven protects them. A boy is Truth with dirt on its face, Beauty with a cut on its finger, Wisdom with bubble gum in its hair and the Hope of the future with a frog in its pocket." When you are busy, a boy is an inconsiderate, bothersome, intruding jangle of noise. When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly, or else he becomes a savage sadistic jungle creature bent on destroying the world, and himself with it..." I just googled it. It's from a much longer speech by the Rev. Guido F. Verbeck III at http://www.stpaulsepis.org/fft0524.pdf |
Sea Wolf – Ses Monuments Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yep. I mislabeled it on itunes. I suck. |
Sea Wolf – Ses Monuments Lyrics | 16 years ago |
UNLESS ces mots sont en francais, in which case I am the jerk. |
Sea Wolf – Ses Monuments Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think you mean "SEA monuments" just a little helpful hint ! |
Braid – Painting Nebraska Lyrics | 16 years ago |
we painted a perfect picture together we sang our song 87 miles long. do you have some kindness for me? remembering the something i heard it hurts when actions speak louder than do you have some time for me? a painting of nebraska afraid as our hearts pray for another day it's always a day away did i miss some signs for me? a hug or a kiss or a painting of nebraska? it helps me remember the time its all i have left the memory is all i have left tearful eyes for someone i left the memory is all i have left to call mine a painting. the lights are off, the book is closed and everyone who noticed knows what was so wrong with me that you left as i slept, silently. |
Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Don't overanalyze Joanna's songs- she admitted herself in an interview that she isn't very good with words and with expressing herself. Just let her do her thing. |
French Kicks – 1985 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yeah some of these lyrics definitely sound wrong. |
JoJo – Too Little Too Late Lyrics | 16 years ago |
who's heard the Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear) version of this song? SO GOOD. |
The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
To me, it's altruistic prostitution gone awry. Has anyone seen Carson Ellis' depiction of this song? Because it's tattooed on my right shoulder and I love it. Hope she doesn't mind... |
Paulson – Slow Down Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Love this song too. It's amazing how much they've changed over the past few years, since they let out the Variations EP and I saw them perform in a small ass church. |
Joanna Newsom – This Side of the Blue Lyrics | 16 years ago |
not ALL songs on songmeanings.net are about prostitution. Prostitution has merely been an easy explanation to all songs now because it is so easy to identify innuendoes (why bother thinking?) Agh, it makes me so angry. Anyway, it's extremely difficult to interpret Joanna's songs because mostly they're written about very personal experiences and real people in her life. |
The Decemberists – The Sporting Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
oh geez, I always thought it said "deafening silence and stock emotion" |
Ink & Dagger – Newspaper Tragedy Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yeah seriously. It's weird how Thursday just jacks this into Jet Black New Year. Most people don't even get the reference. |
Thursday – Jet Black New Year Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"as the dagger screams, 'love is dead,' and it's a newspaper tragedy" THANK YOU, INK & DAGGER. |
Braid – Ariel Lyrics | 16 years ago |
just because it rhymes don't mean it's great, yo. This song is wonderful to rock out to in the car, though. I love the "and everybody knows WHAT UP with my baby snow-oh-ohs" |
