Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a girl, who the character singing the song was close to, who commits suicide and all his feelings and thoughts on the subject.

He sees that she's trying to make an effort to be happy, despite all the shit in her life, but he makes no effort to aid her, and though he watched her die he felt distant because of how little he did to help her. All she needed was a friend, one person close enough to make her feel her life was worthwhile and to fulfill the desires humans are naturally blessed.

The way sexual desire is portrayed in this song is really powerful, the imagery both brings up the taboos associated with it and the baseness of it but also makes it seem miraculous at the same time.

"All of them milking with green fleshy flowers
While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines
Smelling of semen all under the garden
Was all you were needing when you still believed in me"

I also like the chorus where I think he describes that she leaves a message and then commits suicide, and how this act is a well aimed blow to him.

I also think the girl in the song descends into sexual depravity in order to cover the meaninglessness and the pain in her life.

Hence:
"Say what you want to say
And hang for your hollow ways
Moving your mouth to pull out
on your miracle aim for me"

I love the way he sangs the last line, it's almost prayerlike and is very solemn, which is strange because the obvious connotation of it is her love for him, but since she did all these things it kind of makes since.

TV on the Radio – Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
That last comment does make me think that Tunde is possibly singing about himself and his distaste about his actions, but maybe it is about another person. I don't think it matters though, the song is trying to convey a deeper message than one man's actions, whether it's about Tunde Alimbe or any other specific person is irrelevant to the meaning. If tunde wanted to tell you what he himself was like he'd do so in an interview, though we all have to draw from personal experience.

"Poet's behave impudently towards thier own experiences: They exploit them." Nietzsche - BGE

I think it's about a type of person that fails to see the merits of others and causes them pain.

They're empty, souless, and have given up the sacredness of their humanity and become mindless soldier-types that believe what they do is right, and arrogantly so, but never make any progress.

They trust only in themselves and never allow others to help them, and in doing so waste so much possibility for happiness.

The best line in my opinion is this one:

"It's best that your so so blind
Because your heart can't grieve"

I.e. if you could see what you're doing is wrong then you'd feel intensely guilty: it would only cause you pain.

TV on the Radio – Don't Love You Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know, maybe he does see love as a simple thing, simple things aren't necessarily easy, especially when people make them complicated.

"Trying to turn these lover's rules into a simple plan"

Note that he says 'these lover's rules' refering to the groundwork laid out by the individuals in the relationship. Maybe relationships are only difficult when the two individuals aren't really suited to one another.

Anyway, the song is definatley about falling out with a lover, but I like the way he uses the concept of nothing in the lyrics:

"It's been said best by you
Been said best before"

and

"But all that you were
Was all that I had"

Tori Amos – Precious Things Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about the whole high school crush factor, but i think that she is talking about more than that. I think she wants to watch all the niceties of 'the christian boys" or "the demigods", their facades, their masks of beauty, these precious things, crack, crumble and wash away to reveal the ugliness that exists beneath.

"With their nine-inch nails and little fascist panties tucked inside the heart
of every nice girl"

"I wanna smash the faces
Of those beautiful boys"

Nine Inch Nails – Even Deeper Lyrics 19 years ago
Personally i think this song is about slowly going insane. The more you try and deal with your emotions the more you realise things are wrong. I think he talks about having everything as a lack of desire, he is static and left to sink under the weight of his own thoughts. He cannot turn back because it is difficult to forget and he cannot stop because to do so would be suicide, so he carries on going hoping to get out of the tunnel eventually.

Incubus – Echo Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is so articulate about what love is about. "It reminded me twice." Beautiful.

For the "biggest fear" part many have thought about that thats the fear of being in love. I think that its more to do with the fact that he's not only afraid of being in love with her and loved back, he's also afraid of losing her. "Your so worth the fight."

On balance he is more afraid of losing her than being in love with her so he pushes against the smaller fear. "My biggest fear will be the rescue of me." I think he means it's strange becuase his fear has been a good thing, though it is not usually what he periceives it to be. His love has transmuted his fear into action!!

Also the footsteps remind me of soldiers coming to do whatever soldiers do. Also its really clever how this song has been brought to you by a falling bomb, as if this song is the impact.

Its amazing how he starts the song with a jetplane yawning miles above the sky. And then goes on to say all the people his life isn't yet affecting but soon will. THe sky is falling down, it will all end soon.

baby cum angels= baby turned angels, a baby has died. The song is about coping with the death of a child. Hes saying how what they had is still precious because it ALWAYS HAS EXISTED AND ALWAYS WILL EXIST. Also how small we are and how insignificant the earth is, its only the third planet in the solar sytem which is on the spiral arm of our galaxy which is part of a group of galaxies etc. He makes comparisons between time and spacer in more than one way too. He says that time will come back around as a kind of happy thought becuase we'll be able to see all the happy times again. And he says that the world will begin and end. But just because a road begins and ends doesnt meant that it doesnt exist when you've finished walking down it. Basically this song is genious.

Modest Mouse – Paper Thin Walls Lyrics 19 years ago
Its like the paper thin walls bit is reffering to how easy it is to see what other people are doing and fit in with the social norm.

"These walls are paper thin
And everyone hears every little sound
Everyone's a voyeur, their watching me
Watch them, watch me right now "

Then he goes onto say that people will do what they must to get ahead even if they now its wrong.

"They're shakin’ hands, they're shakin’ in their shoes
Oh Lord, don't shake me down"

And how greedy everyone is and how people in third world countires starve to keep the west fat and lazy.(no offence to any nice westeners)

"Everyone wants two of them
And half of everyone else who’s around"

Then he goes on to say that since evryone acts this way its become okay to do so even if its really bad.

"Its been agreed, the whole world stinks
So no ones taking showers anymore"

And then he says that all this greed is pointless ad eventually tiresome even if you find a little pleasure in it.

"Laugh hard its a long ways to the bank."

And eventually he goes on to say how he doesnt care how everyone else acts he's just going to be honest with himself and let everyone else get on with their lives and how he'll let himself be abused for others profit cos he doesnt care about the money. He'll no longer let himself be dragged down by others.

"I can't be blamed for nothin’ anymore
It's been a long time since you've been around
Laugh hard it’s a long ways to the bank
Tow the line to tax the time, you know
That you don't owe
I can't be a fool for everyone that I don't know"

Audioslave – I Am the Highway Lyrics 19 years ago
Also in the verses its like he's saying that he's been driven away. And then he says "friends and liars don't wait for me", as if to lump in the same category, like the friends were the liars...

Viper the spider i think gets the point, but here is how i would put it: I am not here for you to use but i will show you the way. Also dethbylifeitself makes a good point that to me seems to me another dimension of the song. If you use someone you belittle them, he is saying he won't be belittled by your abuse, basically because i am bigger than you.

Tool – Third Eye Lyrics 19 years ago
An interesting point on LSD. Tests have been conducted on people with schizophrenia where they have begin give this acid and tolld to wear a blindfold and left on thier own. They were cured. I havent taken this drug but people who have told me that its like dreaming whilst being awake and the comedown is like a dreamless sleep. This makes me wonder alot about acid and the power of the human mind. I think that we all have the potentail in our m,inds to see great insights without needing acid to bring the subconcious forward into the concious. Maybe our third eye is like our subconcious. This is to me quite a powerfull revelation because of the nature of the subconcious. What is deja vu but a future percieved as the present? Or the realisation of such a premonition?

I particularly like the line chasing the tail of DOGma. He is definitley talking about finding himself. Or maybe parts of himself like the subconcious.

All in all i think this song continues well in the theme of evolution and self dicovery that carries itself through aenema. What it means to you is something you'll have to discover for yourself.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with the idea of trying to reconcile belief with fact and the phsical with the spiritual. has anyone else noticed how the music, especially, if not only, in lateralus (the alulm), often reflects what maynard is trying to say. For example there's a part in lateralus when it drops down to just the drums and the bass and they are slightly out of time but when the guitar comes in it ties the two together like tying the spiritual and the phsical in together. Also when it goes to the part "overtyhinking, overanylying" All the instruments play beautifullly together as if the fact that the music reflects the meanhing is ridiculous because evrything is playing together but then the whole situaition is a paradox because the fact that it tries to prove tier is no meaning gives t meaning, this may reflect the paradox of spirtuality and physicality, and when you try and think through a paradox its like you're thinking in circles, hjence, "spiral out, keep going"

Tool – Disposition Lyrics 20 years ago
I interpret this song to mean the opposite of reflection. I think that he's saying that we should watch the weather change and then change ourselves. I think he's saying that nature is so much more innocent then humanity, we should watch the world and change our disposition to fall better in line with the flow of the world. I think he means this because when he says watch the weather and then leaves a gap before saying change its like that word is refering to the listner and not the weather.

When he syas meation this to me, i think hes sayng what we arer thinking, we are searching for something and he answers by saying watch the weather, change.

Of course i could be completely wrong.
