actually he wanted to die because he thought he was gay after being unable to get his gadget going, so to speak, at his last "date" with a woman not because he sucked as a dentist then they play the song at a ceremony where they give him a faux suicide pill (that he believes is real) awhile later he is "revived" by a girl showing him that his gadget is in perfect working condition and he thus joins the living again saying that this song mocks suicide isn't even half right IMHO, as there is no mocking of it in the movie it originated from M*A*S*H is full of black humor and cynisism, but it doesn't go as far as mocking death, whatever form it may take |

not knowing squat about the hollies, I'm still fairly sure this great song is about carrying eachother in a more universal sense it's a call to everyone to care more for eachother, help eachother and offer our strength to those who lack theirs |
