The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 19 years ago
i am so glad that this song was included in the garden state soundtrack. it is, indeed, perfectly suited to the film.

the song isn't really about unrequited love. it's about an aging person who isn't satisfied with where he finds himself. mostly, he reflects on his time with a person as a time he believes he was happy. in distorted retrospect, he is sure he would have a great life if things had worked out.

("Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place.")

mostly, it's about coming of age. "slang" can refer to the language of a particular group. so here, "new slang" is the language of the middle-aged disillusioned and neurotic ('when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries").

at least, that's my take on it.

Radiohead – Lucky Lyrics 19 years ago
i always thought this song was about falling in love, and the way you feel both heroic and saved at once: "pull me out of the aircrash, pull me out of the wreck, cause i'm your superhero."

of course, it's possible that i totally missed the point.

Radiohead – Fitter Happier Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a good one. This is the prototypical lifestyle-- the ideal. But throughout it is clear something isn't quite right-- clues leak out here and there, and become increasingly desperate as the piece continues. Our speaker is about to burst. There's really too much to say about this one.

Radiohead – Airbag Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is about getting second chances. The speaker was in a car accident, and is saved by an airbag. His survival is so incredible, it's as if he's been reborn. The feeling is incredible: "in an interstellar burst i am back to save the universe."
