And if I should never get the chance to let you know

Fallen, you were calling, you, it’s time to go

Lady GaGa – Bloody Mary Lyrics 6 years ago
I completely disagree with TheWackness... For me this is a very heartbreaking song. This is about Mary Magdalene being strong for the people at Jesus' crucifixion. She mourns him, but she puts on a face for everyone else because they are depending on her. When she is alone, when her guard is down, she is fragile. The reason this song sounds so "creepy" is because it is emulating this mask.

"Love is just a history that they may prove
And when you're gone I'll tell them my religion's you
When Punk-tius comes to kill the king upon his throne
I'm ready for their stones"

This whole verse is about Mary's dedication to Jesus. When he is gone, she will still be a follower of him, a Christian. The line about stones proves her love and dedication to him; she would rather be stoned to death than to betray him or denounce her beliefs.

"I'll dance, dance, dance
With my hands, hands, hands
Above my head, head, head
Like Jesus said

I'm gonna dance, dance, dance
With my hands, hands, hands
Above my head, hands together
Forgive him before he's dead because"

After Jesus' death, she continues to praise him.

"I won't cry for you
I won't crucify the things you do
I won't cry for you, see
When you're gone I'll still be Bloody Mary"

At his crucifixion, Mary refuses to cry because she has to be strong under public scrutiny. On the inside, she is hurting, bloody and tortured.

"We are not just art for Michelangelo to carve
He can't rewrite the agro of my furied heart
I'll wait on mountain tops in Paris cold
Je ne veux pas mourire tout seule"

This is a bitter verse. She feels that artists should not create beautiful art of such tragic events. They did not experience what she went through, so she feels that they are not "allowed" to attempt to portray these feelings. She waits for Jesus' return. The French means "I'm afraid to die alone."

The reference is "my religion is you," though the phrase can be taken more literally here as she's referring to Jesus.

Lady GaGa – Bloody Mary Lyrics 7 years ago
By the way, the first quote is from NME, I think, as they're paraphrasing Gaga's quote below.

Lady GaGa – Bloody Mary Lyrics 7 years ago
"Bloody Mary is quite subtle actually, it's a song about Mary being divine and human at the same time, with a subtext (maybe it's not even a subtext) about the role of a woman who is supposed to be a superstar and a real woman at the same time. Not life alteringly deep perhaps but it works as a pop song."

“I believe that Mary Magdalene was both fully divine and fully human. She has to be strong when Jesus fulfills the prophecy to die for everyone’s sins, but she still has the moment of humanity where she’s upset to let him go. She had to be a superstar, but she must have cried too.”

Never hurts to google before you post.

I Think We're Alone Now does the trick, even though it is a cover...

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this is just her using other religious references to show her devotion to "Judas." She is far from misinformed about her own religion.

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
Exactly. I will say that she is very clever and aware of those rumors and enjoys pissing people off. Anyone notice G.O.A.T. in the Born This Way video? ;) While she does take the album and her music seriously, she obviously has a sense of humor and isn't about taking herself seriously all the time. The different accents, the "ew," the bubble gum. It's all part of the Gaga experience.

The Birthday Massacre – Science Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this song is about self image issues. I've heard this kind of thing is genetic, so that could be why this song is titled "Science."

The girl has her highs and lows. When she feels good about herself, her self esteem is so high that she wants to go out and experience life ("make you up, take you out"). However, when she feels bad about her appearance, she really suffers ("spin the wheel, watch it crash"). Her dress has transformed into rags, she's not the fairest one of all ("turn the dress to broken glass"). Because her feelings are up and down so often, she really savors the moments when she is confident and tries to reaffirm herself by examining her face for long periods of time or taking pictures ("take the time to make this last ... strike a pose and hold the flash"). Once again, genetics. She tries to convince herself that this is all "science" and she shouldn't be feeling this way ("I'm not the only one who's bleeding before the past is done repeating"). These frequent thoughts of her looks have even caused her to consider suicide or self harming ("gets underneath my skin, it won't die, this time if I can't win then I won't try to carry on"). She doesn't do it, but she does spend a long time being depressed but eventually she feels good about herself again, only to repeat the process ("tonight won't be so long, I'll pray for a miracle"). In the morning she wakes up feeling a bit better. She pulls herself out of bed and takes a look at herself in the mirror and forces herself to accept what she sees ("wake you up, pull you out, talk you up to calm you down"). But eventually, she's feeling bad about herself again ("turn it up to scream and shout").

... That's pretty much the gist of my thoughts. Phew.

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
How am I supposed to expand on rumors? There is nothing to expand on. ;)

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
She confirmed that entire verse before the song even released, so it is correct. :) Same goes for the chorus.

I don't hear "brutal" at all, though.

"Ear condom" was confirmed as well.

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
While I agree it sort of sounds that way, she did tweet the chorus lyrics a while back. I remember seeing "I'm just a horny fool, oh baby it's so cool, but I'm still in love with Judas, baby" as well, but I'm sure Gaga didn't tweet those lyrics herself.

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 7 years ago
Mary Magdalene washed Jesus' feet, not Judas'. I mean, maybe she's reversing their roles, but still, the Illuminati rumors are one hundred percent false.

Why can't people understand metaphors? The song is about loving someone who is bad for you. I'm pretty positive it is about a very specific person in her life. I don't want to name names in case I am wrong, but there are many songs on The Fame about him too. You and I on the new album is about him as well.

The Birthday Massacre – Pale Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this song is about religion. Many Christians who look down on atheists, ("I'm looking at a face, a pointed chin towards the sky, an arrogance"), in my experience, are not very virtuous people themselves at all - racist, homophobic, intolerant ("It easily betrays the closest friend, no moment lost, no consequence"). Even if you are religious yourself and are unlike these people, they may paint a bad image of religion to you and you draw further away from it ("The circle starts again, away from you"). But people will always use scare tactics to force you into it ("Deception pulls us in").

This song IMO also references the Bible and the belief that Jesus' words were twisted ("An imitation, a fabrication, a pretty fake, a counterfeit"). It isn't to be taken literally, "God didn't write the Bible" ("An empty carcass behind the artist, is there a trace of innocence?").

Something I've noticed about people who have criticized me themselves try to ignore parts of their belief system that do not necessarily fit their agenda ("A ruse is brought, the truth is bent. And much to our dismay, they're ignorant. The more that we make up, the more it fits").

White Lies – Streetlights Lyrics 7 years ago
I think it's about someone who has had so many FWBs and one night stands that he doesn't know what love is or how to distinguish it from those kinds of relationships. Maybe all the sex has left him jaded and he isn't interested in finding true love, just sex.

Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics 7 years ago
I interpreted "it doesn't matter if you love him or capital H-I-M" / "a different lover is not a sin" as a comment on religious tolerance. Him/a different lover being a god of any other religion or capital H-I-M, the Christian god.

Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics 7 years ago
I think she's saying it's okay if you're not a Christian. Him, meaning gods of other religions, or H-I-M (Christian God). Same thing when she says "a different lover is not a sin."

The Birthday Massacre – Pale Lyrics 7 years ago
It's "a ruse is brought, the truth is bent."

The Birthday Massacre – Shallow Grave Lyrics 7 years ago
Also from the lyricbook it's "always breaking all she borrows" and "more time to think things through."

The Birthday Massacre – Shallow Grave Lyrics 7 years ago
In Chibi's own words:

"It ends up being sort of a dancy song, but the lyrics are sort of dark and speaking about a character. I remember when I was originally being interviewed I mentioned that it was sort of inspired by a Black Dahlia. It wasn’t specifically about her, but it was sort of a concept. It’s about a tragic character who only achieved fame through suffering or having something horrible happen before anyone really paid attention. That was the case in the Black Dahlia, she was a struggling actress. That is the case for a lot of people. They get their fame and notoriety through the tragedies in their lives, so for me that is where that song comes from."

The Birthday Massacre – Always Lyrics 7 years ago
In Chibi's own words:

"As we all move through life it’s like we can all relate to the idea of 'that one relationship', you know what I mean. The one that really devastated you. I’m sure we all have something like that, just a really disappointing and heart wrenching experience. With the lyrics for that song - well, I just sort of looked at my experience that was like that."

The Birthday Massacre – Sideways Lyrics 7 years ago
In Chibi's own words:

"For me that song is about the impermanence of things. Moving on, often literally - moving down a highway away from an experience. Leaving fragments of yourself behind. Never being able to revisit a memory, even if you return to the physical place."

The Birthday Massacre – Queen of Hearts Lyrics 7 years ago
Oh, and the girl is the "queen of hearts." Sounds like she's a heartbreaker and this dude is one of many who have fallen for her.

The Birthday Massacre – Queen of Hearts Lyrics 7 years ago
Sounds to me like a guy who had a crush on a girl most of his life, and one day decides that he would rather have her for one night and kill her than never have her at all.

“He puts the gun to her head
She tells him everything”

When she’s at gunpoint, she doesn’t hesitate to tell him whatever he wants to hear, like “I love you.”

“He sews the crack in his heart
Before he tears her apart
In the basement underneath”

He still loves and cares about her, but he knows he can never let her go after all he’s done now–she would never speak to him again. So he clears his mind and heart and kills her even though he doesn’t want to hurt her.

“He burns her high school pictures
And buries old dreams
He reads her diary once more”

He gets rid of everything that makes her real to him, photos of her and any dreams of a family with her he once had. He has to forget about her completely or she will haunt him forever.

“He cleans the tears from her eyes
He still can’t stand to see her cry”

He still loves her and it is hard for him to do what he is doing, but he must.

VNV Nation – Endless Skies Lyrics 7 years ago
This is one of the best VNV Nation songs.

I think everyone's already said what this song means to me, but it's basically about taking time to just smell the roses when life seems like it's going too fast. Take time to breathe. No worries.

Lady GaGa – Paparazzi Lyrics 7 years ago
For some reason I haven't found many people who agree with me. I think this song is about someone who is obsessed with another but is too afraid to speak up about their feelings -- it's almost like stalking. The infatuated person is the paparazzi who will follow the other until he/she reciprocates the love.

The Birthday Massacre – Broken Lyrics 7 years ago
AlecsPen is correct. The lover infected with HIV knows no one will ever want him if they knew about his disease, so he hides it. When he has sex with a new person, they don't know ("when you let me in, did you not know where I had been?").

"They let suspicion kill the truth" makes me think someone only BELIEVES someone is lying, but I don't know...

The Birthday Massacre – Sleepwalking Lyrics 7 years ago
Someone is cheating on his lover. I think the story of this song is told from the viewpoint of the person he is cheating on his lover with. I hope that made sense; I don’t know how else to explain who I’m talking about. I’ll call the cheater “Red” and the person he’s cheating on his lover with “Violet.”

“Wait dear
The time is getting late here
I'm all washed up
Embraced with faint applause (I think this line is wrong)
Dressed in a cheap facade
I'm looking for a place I'll never see again”

Late at night, Violet sneaks into Red’s house to have casual sex, but she is falling in love with him. The cheap façade is the face she puts on in order to make him think she has no feelings for him. She knows he will never love her the way she does (“I’m looking for a place I’ll never see again”).

“A night turns to a day
A street I've never walked on
I was never here
Just a faint reflection
A day turns to a month
A second of affection
I was never here
I'm just a faint reflection”

When the morning comes, Violet goes back home. She knows she shouldn’t be sleeping with Red, she should never have any reason to be there (“a street I’ve never walked on, I was never here, just a faint reflection”). Red wants to hook up with Violet as a one-time thing, but it ends up lasting longer (“a day turns to a month”). Violet savors the time she has him to herself, but it won’t last (“a second of affection”).

There's nothing here worth taking
Just my reflection fading on the wall
Not the fairest one of all
I'm looking for a place I'll never see again”

She’s pretending not to care deeply about Red. She knows she can’t compete with the one he really loves (“not the fairest one of all”).

The Birthday Massacre – Goodnight Lyrics 7 years ago
“First place on a classroom wall
Every turn of a face
Can help to break the
Fall from a domestic disgrace
Every rumor displaced is lost and found

A lack of discipline
One hand to cut the other
So unprofessional
You're not a friend, you're just a lover
Nothing exceptional
This is correctional”

The subject of this song is remembering his (or her, I don’t want to say “them”) school days and how miserable they were/are for him. I think the subject has been self harming for a long time, but now he has decided to finally end it. The weapon he uses is most likely a knife (“one hand to cut the other”). It’s a lack of discipline because he self harms so often when he hasn’t done anything wrong. The object referred to in “you’re not a friend, you’re just a lover” is the item (also a knife, most likely) he uses to kill himself. The act is correctional because he is fixing what is wrong about his life–his life itself.

“Mirror on the wall
Frame the picture
Reflect this kiss to wish us all

The chorus is about the final moments before his death. The image I get is he’s in a bathtub with his wrists slashed and is looking at himself through a mirror on the wall, literally framing the picture of his suicide. The kiss is symbolic of self harm, like pallidity said, the cuts in his wrists. Blade to skin. He’s wishing himself goodnight because he will never wake again.

“First day, in a victim's chair
Every surface replaced
Can help to keep you
Fair for a corrective gaze
Every future displayed
Will match your crowd

A loss of innocence
One hand to wash the other
Be a perfectionist
You're nothing if your just another
Something material
This isn't personal”

“Every surface replaced” references covering up scars, as I think someone here said. After he cuts his wrists, he realizes what he has done (“a loss of innocence, one hand to wash the other”). He tried to be original in different so his life would be better (“be a perfectionist, you’re nothing if you’re just another”). “Something material” is the knife. What the knife has done to him isn’t personal because he is the one who used the knife for the purpose of killing himself.

“We're all dancing
To the same sad song
And we're not sleeping
But it won't take long”

We’re all living the same life, everyone has moments of despair. Life is so short (“it won’t take long”). “Sleeping” might be a reference to sex and becoming pregnant–adding more people to the cycle of life.

Confessions incomplete
Instructions will repeat

Life is just the same cycle repeating…

The Birthday Massacre – Shallow Grave Lyrics 7 years ago
UsagiHell is spot on.

The Birthday Massacre – Falling Down Lyrics 7 years ago
I think this is a conversation between a parent(s) and a child. The child wants to establish his (or her) own identity as a person but his parents want to restrict him.

This blackened eye.
You learned your lessons falling down.
Far behind, and tracing footsteps home.

Despite your lack of pride.
You wore your imperfections well.
Spend your time alone.
Trace your footsteps home."

The parents are speaking here. The child learned how to act from his parents. Whenever he stepped out of line, he was hurt (blackened eye) and learned his lessons "falling down." He always felt like he couldn't compete with the other kids (far behind) and so he followed in his parents' footsteps so he could be "normal" (tracing footsteps home). Even though he felt like he screwed up, he tried to show that it didn't affect him (despite your lack of pride, you wore your imperfects well, dignified). He feels lonely and like no one understands him, like most teenagers do (spend your time alone), and his parents give up on trying to make him make friends with people he doesn't like.

"Your hands are always reaching out of favor.
Your kind are only good for bad behavior.
Your mouth was never one to trust.
You're always speaking out,
Falling far behind,
Falling out of line."

The chorus is also in the voice of the parents. They feel like their kid is bad because he doesn't act like the other kids or like the same things they do. Maybe he's gay, maybe he's into art rather than sports, maybe he wants a tattoo. Basically just stereotypical things conservative parents will say about their kids who are different, even though they aren't bad at all.

This bitter tongue.
You spoke your lessons falling down, talking out,
And breaking silence.

Despite the harm you've done,
You swallowed your rejection well.
Sing your song alone.
Trace your footsteps home."

The child is finally speaking up for himself now. He’s finally decided not to listen to what his parents have to say about him (farewell, this bitter tongue). He realizes that they’ve done more harm than good to an innocent boy (you spoke your lessons falling down, talking out, and breaking silence). He’s rejected them and decides to shut them out of his life, but they are still smug because they believe their child is going through a phase and that they are right (despite the harm you’ve done, you swallowed your rejection well, amplified). They have no one to control anymore and they remain the same (sing your song alone, trace your footsteps home).

"I'll make you forget
With the taste of lambskin
The bounty is yours
It tastes like medicine"

The first line makes me think of date rape, though I'm not sure; the last line might add to this as revenge for something. Lambskin refers to condoms. The bounty is the body of your partner. "It tastes like medicine" might refer to the idiom "a taste of your own medicine."

"We evaporate
Without condensation
But heaven is still
Your only expectation"

After both climax, they lose interest, but it is still the main interest during the act.
