The Gaslight Anthem – The Queen of Lower Chelsea Lyrics 1 year ago
The line is actually "While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had", which further proves your theory correct.

It's actually very strongly thematically linked to "High Lonesome", as well as the Hold Steady's "Joke About Jamaica".

They're all about a girl who was seen as attractive/desirable, partying and dancing when she was young, but getting older she realizes that that lifestyle isn't working for her. The boys who used to obsess over her just don't care anymore now that she's aging, and she doesn't know what to do.

In this case, the girl just sort of turns to working a lot and puts that behind her, but maybe regrets or misses it. In the other songs mentioned, it's pretty clear she turns to drugs.

Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – The Beat That My Heart Skipped Lyrics 1 year ago
Does anyone know what's sampled after the intro, the guitar part? It sounds familiar but I can't place it.

"We’re looking in, I’d never lie, that face is pressed against the glass and now you’ve turned to grey."

I think that should be: "We're looking in on a better life, with our faces pressed against the glass - and now you've turned away."

Craig Finn – No Future Lyrics 1 year ago
"No Future" is, of course, a reference to the Sex Pistols song (hence the Johnny Rotten name-drop), but it could also refer to the trio of songs by Titus Andronicus - I know they're friends of Craig's.

The Hold Steady – Cheyenne Sunrise Lyrics 2 years ago
"I'm with the Christian soldiers
We're gonna bash right through your borders
I bet your next party gets sketchy
I saw the new kids nodding off"

should be:

"Onward, Christian soldiers
We're gonna bash right through your borders
I bet your next party gets sketchy
I saw the new kids nodding off"

It might be "bash back through your borders", too, but I'm not sure. It's definitely "onward", though, a reference to the hymn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onward,_Christian_Soldiers

Frank Turner – I Am Disappeared Lyrics 3 years ago
The last verse is reminiscent of Brand New's "Bought A Bride", from their new album.
"Cars are little blood cells
We are oxygen
City is the airway
Suburbs appendages"

Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics 3 years ago
The first verse is about STDs/STIs (or what was probably VD as they called it in the past).

"Mother told me, yes, she told me I'd meet girls like you.
She also told me, "Stay away, you'll never know what you'll catch.
Just the other day I heard of a soldier's falling off
Some Indonesian junk that's going round.""

"heard of a soldier's falling off" is implicitly "heard of a soldier's (genitalia) falling off" due to "some Indonesian junk that's going 'round" - "you'll never know what you'll catch".

The Mountain Goats – Roger Patterson Van Lyrics 4 years ago
"When you load on something heavy, you've gotta watch your back"... this line made me cry.

A good friend of my parents, like an uncle to me, was a truck driver. He was out for a while, and on his first day back, they over-loaded his truck, and he crashed, and the steel load he was carrying crashed right into the cab.

And that's all I could think of when I heard that line.

Why would he want to fall?

What about "fall" in love?

"I don't care as long as I fall in love", maybe?

Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics 4 years ago
This might be weird, but the singing kinda reminds me of Neil Young on this one.
That plus "Some men die under the mountain just looking for gold, some die looking for a hand to hold." VS "You keep me searching for a heart of gold, and I'm growing old. I've been a miner for a heart of gold."...

Brand New – Noro Lyrics 4 years ago
The amusing thing is that I started listening to Brand New a few years ago when I was working at a summer camp. The director of my department was a pretty big fan and played them a lot. Some of both Your Favorite Weapon and Deja, I think this was before Devil and God came out.

Anyhow, the camp was shut down for about a week and a half due to a virus outbreak.
The virus was the Norovirus.

Our nickname for it at the time was "The Noro"...

The Gaslight Anthem – Angry Johnny and the Radio Lyrics 4 years ago
Further, "Angry Johnny" is the name of a song by Poe, and "Angry Johnny and the Killbillies" is the name of the band. The title could refer to either of those.

This song is referenced in the Gaslight Anthem song "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues"... 'I haven't seen Sandy, Angry Johnny, or Mary'.

The Gaslight Anthem – Boomboxes and Dictionaries Lyrics 4 years ago
I think it's
"And if you're scared of the future tonight,
We'll just take it each ALBUM one at a time."

Given the references to letting the radio play loud, and also the general music-centricness of the album.

The Gaslight Anthem – Angry Johnny and the Radio Lyrics 4 years ago
It's possible that "Angry Johnny" is Johnny Rotten; Gaslight Anthem are punk-influenced (and some might say punk themselves), and considering that it's on an album that also mentions Joe Strummer... well, Johnny Rotten could well be called "Angry".
