Nirvana – Sappy Lyrics

This song is about life.
We're trapped and yet we think we're happy just going along our daily lives whether we're in school or even worse, a job. We're under control from our boss at work, the government and religion. We're all in a fucking laundry room, not matter who we are and where we are, we are trapped and we have no choice but to accept it. Kurt got it all in one song. |

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics
|
It took me a while to make sense of this song but I think I finally understand it, in my own way. I am not a christian but I think it compares an everyday person to Jesus. This person is going through some kind of abuse/trouble for telling things that other people refuse to believe: 'here you go creating another fable', similar to what Jesus went through. So this person feels they have no choice but to commit suicide because he/she cannot take the injustice of the world...again, almost similar to the story of Jesus, 'trust in my self righteous suicide'. And the last verse touches me the most because it has direct references to the last words of Jesus when he was crucified 'why have you foresaken me', that represents this persons cry out to god because of the trouble he's been through and the injustice he faces. and the line 'father into your hands I commend my spirit' is again a direct reference to the last words of Jesus. It represents the person wanting to leave earth and find release in heaven.
The line 'I cry when angels deserve to die' means that it's tragic when people die (through suicide or through murder) when they have no where to turn, when people will not help them or when they are not believed for whatever reason. These people can be compared to Jesus, an angel that meant well but was misunderstood.
In a way it reminds me a little of Kurt Cobain. In a nutshell I think this song is about the injustice of the world and it's cruel nature and how people fall victim of this. |

Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics

I think it's about regret. It's about realising where you are in your life, feeling alone and wanting what you had in the past so badly. It's so sad because we can never 'go back to the start' and make things right. We have to live with our regrets forever. |

I really had no idea about the charles manson theory. when i first heard this song it sounded like a love song to me and that's what it means to me. I really love the music at the start and how he's sings 'hey you...'. It makes me think of someone who loves someone that left them hurt and alone to watch the world passing by. |

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics

If you can't see the beauty in kurts lyrics you are blind. If you can't feel the emotion that was created through his music, you have no soul. Of course you're entitled to your own opinion but there's no need to hate on here. We're here to discuss the meaning behind kurts lyrics, which isn't really possible, but we come here to show what it means to us as individuals. Nirvanas music had that effect, that's why kurt touched the lives of so many who felt they had lost all hope and he continues to help others through.
I think someone summed it up very well when they said nirvana came from a movement of like minded individuals who needed to see a change. There was a need to break the mould that society had created through its idolisation of pretentious snobs. He described them as three kings helming the exodus. |

Pearl Jam – Immortality Lyrics

All comments on here make perfect sense, from the cobain theory to the theory on Indians in America. I relate this to people who are abused in life, taken advantage of and seek the relief of death to live forever away from it all on the other side...'some die just to live'.
This has the most amazing lyrics I've ever heard in a song. Pearl Jam are underrated. But then again, the majority of the population don't know how to appreciate the truest form of self expression through music, which in my opinion came from the grunge era. At least we are the lucky few that get it. |

Hole – Beautiful Son Lyrics
|
'my beautiful son' - when you love someone so much they become a part of you and you feel like they're you're own flesh and blood. That sounds weird, but I think that's a deep level of pure love and courtney felt that for kurt. Just watch the video for 'doll parts' where the boy in the video resembles kurt as a child. She really loved him. |

Alice in Chains – Bleed The Freak Lyrics
|
I'm hearing this song for the first few times and it's so amazing. The meaning is so clear to me. Here goes...
"Name your god and bleed the freak" - drain the belief of god out of you because religion is all made up and people go to stupid extents in the name of religion.
He's saying that God is nothing and that he'd like to see people bleed for something that, like God has no real power, ie himself.
It's anti - religion. I believe in God but not religion as such myself. But I give this song credit for being incredibly powerful.
It's about how religion puts the fear of god into people and they need to 'bleed out' the religious garbage. |

For some reason the middle of this song reminded me a little of 'orion' by metallica. I suppose it's the spacey sound. Anyway, to me the song captures a dark feeling of depression after someone has hurt you and sucked the life out of you and you're trying to let go. |

Metallica – The Unforgiven II Lyrics
|
To me this song sounded like it was about rape at first “lay beside me, this won’t hurt I swear…I take this key and I bury it in you”.
Either that or its about two people who have been “raped” in the sense of going through troublesome lives or being used and abused during their childhood and having their character and soul destroyed. I think it’s a dark love song. Two people are brought together through their connection to pain and trouble and are clearly traumatised “if you can understand the me, then I can understand the you…we share this paralyse”. And their “black hearts scarring darkness still” explains how they’re permanently scarred.
Maybe what they’ve been through makes them hurt each other because pain is all they know and they see themselves, rather than their abusers, as the unforgiven… “Lay beside me, tell me what I’ve done”. They continue to live as abused people.
The line “now I see the sun” could mean that they’ve finally found a release in each other, however sick, twisted and diseased the relationship might be.
I don’t know. I think the song can be interpreted in many ways. I also agree that it has some biblical references to heaven etc. It’s a very deep and dark song. |

Sarah McLachlan – Building A Mystery Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Lyrically, it sounds like she’s describing some kind of weirdo tramp/hippy freak. But I like to hear it the way I want to because despite that description the song has a beautiful interpretation, personally for me.
To me, its about being in amazement and wonderment over someone who you find unique and beautiful. I think the imagery created in the song by using words such as ‘night’, ‘vampires’, ‘jesus’, ‘suicide’ ‘shrine’ and ‘snow’ create imagery which reflects the unusual nature of this person.
You can’t quite figure out what this person is all about yet you feel a certain connection to this persons soul which makes you want to know more. But you can’t quite understand what it all means and it remains one big mystery and as beautiful as it is, it’s also frustrating.
I don’t want to ruin the song but it really reminds me of ‘buffy the vampire slayer’ where buffy falls in love with angel the vampire and how he’s a complete mystery to her. It makes a good fit for that story. |

Justin Timberlake – SexyBack Lyrics
|
Woah, the 9/11 interpretation is a little far fetched. But I always like it when people come up with creative interpretations.
Justin denies it but after reading the lyrics I see there are many references to Britney –
‘dirty babe’ – he still thinks she’s ‘dirty’ for cheating on him…
‘I’m your slave’ – reference to brineys song ‘I’m a slaaaaave for you’.
‘I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave’ – brineys new image after she broke up with Justin was quite dominatrix.
‘Its just that no one makes me feel this way’ – she was his first love etc.
‘come let me make up for the things you lack’ – a little patronising to his ex.
‘cause your’e burning up for me and that’s a fact’ – britney couldn’t get over him and kinda ‘lost it’ and did a lot of crazy things after they broke up.
Oh and one final little thing I noticed about the meaning of ‘I’m bringing sexy back’ – he had a recent interview where he said something like ‘ I think britney will come back and when she does she’ll win’.
But I think the whole ‘Im brining sexy back’ is self explanatory when you don’t think about all the britney shit.
Anyway, that’s just a possible interpretation. Overall, it’s a catchy tune and I like this new sound timbalands bringing to the dance floor. |

Hole – Doll Parts Lyrics
|
I agree with everyone else who has posted above about this song being about kurt.
I think the song is about loving someone who is popular and loved by everyone. It leaves you feeling empty and left behind. You feel as though you have to compete with everyone else. I think this song is about jealousy, it’s reflected in the line ‘I want to be the girl with the most cake’.
I think the reference to dolls is a reference to kurts obsession with dolls. That’s quite simple. But I think it also adds to the general theme of the song and how Courtney is acting like a little girl who isn’t getting her way. She’s jealous and frustrated.
Overall, this is a beautiful song. It makes you feel Courtney’s pain in a way. I think the lines ‘It stands for knife, for the rest of my life’ and ‘someday you will ache like I ache’ are two very powerful lines. For me they capture the pain, distress and sorrow of the song. Courtney knows how to express her pain well. |

Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics

This song is about being used and abused. You give someone everything you have to offer, you open yourself up to them, you’re there for them but they only use what you’ve given when they need it and when they’re done with it, they throw it all back in your face.
Its also about people who stop you achieveing what you believe you can. Its about people who discourage you, don’t believe in you and make you feel worthless. These people get ‘the best of you’, they can ruin you, but this song is about fighting back and breaking yourself free from their grip.
Great line to people who go through this kind of shit - ‘were you born to resist or be abused? I swear I’ll never give in I refuse’. |

Sheryl Crow – If It Makes You Happy Lyrics

If it makes you happy, it CAN be that bad, and that’s why you are so sad. That’s the reality of the situation. A lot of things make us happy, but they can be bad for us and knowing that but continuing doing them is what makes us sad. We know damn well they’re not good for us but we carry on because they make us feel good.
That’s life – one big contradiction. Great song though. Haven’t got a clue what the rest of it means. |

Rihanna – Unfaithful Lyrics
|
I have a few comments about this song. It brings to attention quite an intersesting matter that most if not all people will face in a relationship – its inevitable that at some point they’ll contemplate being with someone else. whether or not you act on that compulsion depends on how much self control you have over your feelings. There’s quite a lot of hate towards Rihanna in the comments above and its totally unnecessary. Firstly, she didn’t write this song – as many above have said it was written by ne-yo. Secondly, its telling a story – rihanna simply PLAYS the girl in this story – its theatrical and doesn’t in anyway suggest her wrong doing in real life. Thirdly, shes got a great team behind her who are marketing her as the hottest new product on the music scene – its clear this song was going to create some controversy, therefore promoting her further. Obviously they didn’t think it would create negative publicity - people wouldn’t be dumb enough to believe she wrote this song about a real life experience and then told the world so as to intentionally portray herself as selfish and cold hearted. Fourthly, this song isn’t very deep, its quite simple but portrays something that isn’t so simple when experienced in reality. These things do happen, usually the person who cheats gets branded as a self-centred bitch but it really depends on the situation they find themselves in. The video suggest she was simply a victim of her own human weakness. Humans constantly seek pleasure – she gave up her love and trust to satisfy her longing for desire. So this betryal of her boyfriends trust is simply due to physical attraction and lust for someone else. When its emotional attaction for someone else – that’s when things get complex. In that situation the person may be attached to their partner because in reality they need eachother and become dependant on eachother and form a relationship which is based on living together and creating security for themselves in their day to day lives. Beyond that there’s that other person that you love that you could never be with because the feelings for them are based purely on passion and not on any idea of living together and being together in a practical sense. Im not in anyway supporting those who cheat on their partners, but I am sayi ng that in reality it happens and for those who do it purely for physical attraction – shame on them. For those who do it for emotional reasons – its debatable, im not saying its acceptable, but I do think that’s a different story. |

Nobody can scream ‘FUCK YOU’ with the same powerful effect as Courtney. That’s the best part of the song and its perfectly fitting as well. Its already been said - the songs obviously about Frances being taken away from Courtney when the authorities were questioning her capabilities as a mother after the drug abuse accusations etc. so the song encapsulates the rage she felt at that point mixed with the effect of hormones after giving birth. Any girl knows hormones can bring out the worst anger ever but with Courtney it’s a thousand times worse. But at least she created some fuckin amazing music from her rage. |

Foo Fighters – Resolve Lyrics

i agree with cyrstal rainbow. kurts death still seems to have an effect on dave - its clearly expressed in his lyrics. also, this song was probably written in 2004 - ten years after after kurts death and so it makes even more sense that dave would write a song about him and finally realise that now its time for some 'resolve'. all the references to kurt are there to support that. in fact, i think the album title 'in your honour' is also a reference to honouring kurt - aswell as some other things. and since its the foos ten year anniversary daves obviously got nostalgic and wrote a whole bunch of songs about the most obvious events that happened in the past 10 years - kurts death being one of them. |

White fly, I totally agree with you. You’ve elaborated my point. Its true that everyone is always missing someone. But there are different ways of missing people – sometimes it hurts until it feels like its killing you and you can’t take it and get used to their absence, sometimes its just a light feeling that makes you feel a little low but you’ll get over it and at other times it’s the occasional memory that makes you feel slightly nostalgic. This song is for the first example. That’s my opinion anyway : ) |
