Formed in 2006 by founders Rob Lowe and Michael Muller, Balmorhea play textural post-rock with a classical influence. Using the talents of Aisha Burns (violin), Nicole Kern (cello), and Travis Chapman (double bass), the Austin, TX, quintet utilizes plaintive strings as well as a host of other instruments played by Lowe and Muller to create a delicately layered and pastoral sound. In 2007 the band self-released its eponymous debut, Balmorhea, followed the next year by Rivers Arms, which was released on Western Vinyl. The band released its third full-length outing, All Is Wild, All Is Silent, as well as the remix album All Is Wild, All Is Silent: Remixes in 2009. After extensive touring in the United States and Europe, the band found time to get back into the studio, and issued Constellations the following year.
